Raum

Description

With his distinctive red hair and fair freckled skin, Raum could stand out most places. He's tall, too: a little over six feet, with a lean physique even as he heads into his forties. His face is narrow, ending in a pointed chin; there's a few lines beginning to show up around his mouth to mark the turns. His eyes are a sharp, cool blue, their no-nonsense look mirrored in both posture and attire.

Background

Born and raised in the desert of Igen, Raum was born to a trader woman who happened to get pregnant while at one of the holds her family's caravan passed through. She ended up settling down at Igen Hold, finding the open desert and all the travel just too unbearable as her pregnancy progressed. So Raum was born at Igen Hold, and up until the day he was exiled, he never went anywhere else.

Untalented in crafting and book-learning, ignored by searchdragons, and disinclined toward honest labor, Raum surprised very few indeed when he found himself drafted by the hold guard after one too many dust-ups on their other side. Despite the inauspicious start--it was the guards or the mines for him--Raum proved himself over the ensuing turns, going from an unremarkable roustabout to a disciplined solider. With a keen mind for investigating and a certain ruthlessness toward friend and enemy alike, he rose through the ranks relatively quickly, all the way up to captain of the hold guard.

Where once Raum would have happy with a good fight and a trampy woman, now he enjoyed the finer things in life: blooded ladies, fine liquor, and the privilege of throwing rivals under the metaphorical bus, politically speaking. But Raum wasn't content there, at the top of his line of work, and so he became easy pickings for one of the strongest rivals of his Lord. The younger brother of the current Lord Igen had his eye on taking over, and was willing to promise his daughter in marriage to Raum if Raum would only help get rid of Lord Igen.

Raum had no particular loyalty to the current Lord and moreover was confident of his ability to knock the brother's only son out of the picture and set himself up to be Lord Consort someday. What he didn't count on was his assassination attempt being ratted out by the Lord's brother. Raum was quickly caught, tried, and exiled, dumped about as far from Igen as possible: far to the northwest, on part of a little archipelago where the Reaches had many years ago sent their own rebellious holders. It was mostly luck that brought those holders into contact with Raum, who spun some such story about a shipwreck, only survivor, etc. etc. and tried to settle into the strange culture of the islanders.

Unsurprisingly, Raum made no friends on the island; his presence served as more of a cultural touchstone for the islanders, who soon began lining up on the side of those who believed him and those who didn't. All questions of the reality of the mainland were put to rest, however, when the Weyr discovered and rescued the exiles.

On the mainland, in a Weyr, Raum found himself neither an exile nor a weyrfolk--a position at least one person was willing to put to good use. Devaki recruited the stranger to his cause, using Raum to ferret out the truth of their exile in hope of getting the exiles what is rightfully theirs. He probably didn't count on this getting Seani murdered in the process, but in the end, Devaki got the results he wanted: proof of a conspiracy and cover-up involving High Reaches Hold and Weyr both.

Raum, with Devaki in tow, disappeared after Iovniath and Cadejoth's hatching. Their whereabouts is unknown.
