| It wouldn't take long. It was... just in case. She had no solid evidence. Just a f-- No solid evidence. She wasn't going to have it any other way. So on their way out to sweeps-- because not only would they be fresher then, more clearheaded, if anything went wrong she was not about to have put in hours of work first-- she asked Solith to talk to Iesaryth. Not about anything important, just to keep their thoughts near. She remembered when the queen had rescued them in weyrlinghood, not when they were first learning but later, yanking them back from that one close call that had her shivering for she didn't know how long, after. So Solith talked to Iesaryth, and she didn't talk to anyone, not either of them-- not the man whose name she knew, and not the one she didn't-- and not her girl friends either. She hadn't burned the letters, not even the unopened ones; she hadn't written any letters of her own; she still hadn't returned the sketchbook, and if things went wrong, she was pretty sure it was never ever going to be found. But they weren't going to go wrong, not any more than they had already. She was gentle with Solith, gentle the way she hadn't been the day after that night when all-- almost all-- all she let herself want was answers. She hadn't learned much, just a vanishing taste of that dragon's unhappiness and upset with his rider... and hunger... and she wanted to know more but she didn't want more and she really didn't want to have to explain to Solith, again, about how to be careful around him and if she must talk to him, to not talk to him about her and to tell her about anything at all. Solith didn't like that, didn't understand, was uneasy about distrust and it was so frustrating. She wanted to-- But what she was going to do was to fix that image in her head and show it to Solith and she was going to hold it, and hold it, and hold it and they were going to stay there, in the cold, until she was done. And then it was done. And then they were off to sweeps, and below them fields were burning, and part of her wanted to smother the army's flames-- while the rest of her wanted to burn and burn and burn. It hadn't taken long. |
