It seemed like an eternity before Ghena finally stopped sobbing, so long that Knioth had called to one of the weyrling instructor blues and apprised them of the situation, requesting an instructor to fly back with them separately from the rest of the group once his rider was fit to fly again. He let her cry, and kept wings and claws around her, hiding her from the eyes of those whispering weyrlings who might wish to make a spectacle of it.

If he had ever known the stories from earth's history of dragons kidnapping damsels Knioth would be quick to correct them. They weren't kidnaping as much as protecting them, keeping them safe from the real monsters.

It was one of the things he loved about Ghena, she was strong and brave enough to be his squire, but he also knew that she needed him to protect her in those moments where courage and fortitude failed and the chinks in her armor were exposed to the barbs of life. It didn't help that she lashed out when hurt, that she wanted to damage as much as she had been damaged.

"I'm sorry to ruin your trip. I didn't mean to fall apart like that." She spoke finally long after the sobs and tears had ceased. "It won't happen again. He isn't the same person I remember, and it's expecting too much for that person to come back."

« Sometimes what hurts the most is when we realize that the beings we idolized are just normal like the rest of us. » The blue rumbles softly, nuzzling her. « He did try though. Give him some credit for that won't you? »

"Does it even matter what I give him credit for? He's never going to be Grr again. "

« Then don't expect him to be, am I not better than any flesh and blood brother you could have ever imagined my squire? Do I not protect you when you need protection, comfort you when you need comforting, and guide you when you need guidance? Do I not make up for the peasant's deficiencies? »

"Yes, you are more than I ever could have hoped for Knioth."

« Then let G'laer merely be G'laer and don't expect more from him than he's ready to give. » Gentle, but chiding. « He's had a hard row too from the way Teisyth was spitting venom. »

"I think I lost him completely."

« Even if you did, at least go and apologize to the poor Teisyth, she did try to make things better, even if she made a mess out of it. »

They sit a while longer in silence before heading back to the Weyr. There may even be a special bottle of oil sitting on the Teisyth's couch and a thank you note on A'rist's cot placed when no one is looking.

< The morning after the marks appear on G'laer's cot, the same bag with the same amount is tucked under Ghena's pillow with a note. Even if he hadn't recognized the handwriting (which, maybe he didn't!), there's too much context for it to have come from anyone else, as far as he's concerned). The note reads: "Keep your marks. You might have twins someday and need them. Aseana and I worked it out. I'm to make arrangements to foster them here. The Weyr has always looked out for their own."
