| Empty Weyr, High Reaches Weyr(#420RIJs) High on the eastern bowl, overlooking the feeding grounds, is this ledge. Thousands of turns of dragons' talons have scarred the rock, leaving jagged scrapes that the barefooted must be wary of. The long empty weyr stretches dark and looming past the ledge. Wild avians and wherries have raised their young in the cave's safety, leaving the remains of nests along the floor and outcroppings. The only signs of the previous human occupant are a broken-legged chair, a forest green mug hidden in the shadows along the floor, and a rope-bed, its ticking having long ago turned rancid. A few words and the start of a painting have been sketched along one stone wall but turns of encrusted dirt and grime have obscured the details. Contents: Oenoneth C'len Talien Madison Shanlee Raykini Kaylith Ayson Shalyn Your location's current time: 20:32 on day 26, month 9, Turn 12, of the Interval. It is a autumn evening. Raykini listens quietly to the story, arching a brow a bit. "But stuff like that doesn't happen." Ray points out, lifting a finger as if to prove his point. "I don't believe in that sort of stuff, it's one thing for stories. But it's a good story, I think, entertaining." A sudden wind howls and whines it's way past the ledge, a mournful dirge of sound. Shan turns chin over shoulder to glance outward, the bluey-green drawing a light chuckle and a dip of head in greeting from the wingsecond. Back to the candidates "You heard the man." on C'len's words of taking a break. Shalyn's words on greenriders in conjunction with the weyr earns her a heavy frown. Maddie is currently stuck under the layering of junk in the warm corner as she continues to battle with the dust and spinner webs. "Oh no, you're not going to stay here, Mister Spinner web!" She tells it as she wacks at one of the many in the corner. "Your being thrown out." She tips the bucket of sand over and grumbles a few choice, surprising and foul words. "Fra.." She grumbles and turns towards the gathering, dirt coursed over her face and hands. "Cookies? Yum!" "I-" Talien, to Ayson, aborts her original decision. "Keep it safe," she says instead, "Don't want anyone pinching it on me. I'll get us something to eat." Us being she and he, Talien moves off toward the cookies and damp towels rather decisively, leaving Ayson to either protecting the in-demand brooms or abandoning them to do as he'd wish. On closer inspection, the spill of sand which is in the warmest part of the old hearth reveals that some small creature has carefully scraped it together into a mound that appears to be 'lumpy' in places. Care should be taken when moving the sand aside. Shalyn shrugs at her fellow greenrider, "I spent one night in here." she holds up her index finger, "One. When I was fourteen turns. I'll live weyrless before spend another night in here. Did someone say Cookies?" Yet another dragon goes circling up the length of the bowl - nothing really to note. Except that the angular bronze wings towards the empty ledge where the candidates and others are gathered, touching down - pausing long enough to deposit the Weyrleader - before returning to his circling vigil of the Weyr. R'hin has several skins hung from a hook he carries, pale gaze sweeping the area before settling on C'len and Shanlee, not doing anything in particular to draw attention to himself. Ayson shakes his head once he identifies the dragon has being just a real life dragon. He shakes his head, and leans one of the brooms against the wall. He sweeps idly at the lumpy pile of sand, not paying particular attention to what he's doing while glancing to see if Talien really is snagging him a couple of a cookies or not. As she scrambles back from the corner Madison pauses and turns back to look at the sand, blinking down at it. She kneels before it and watches. She squats there, watching the sand as she tries to work it out. "seems.." She mumbles somethign to herself before calling over her shoulder. "Bring me a cookie, Ayson!" She pats at Ayson's broom. "Stooop!" She says, batting it away with a good deal of force. Raykini turns to look upwards, watching yet another dragon enter the weyr, "Surprised so many dragons can fit in here." He sweeps some more dust into the center, causing the dust to swuirl around the weyr, it's a miricle they're doing anything to clean it at all. "Cookies," C'len confirms. The basket is opened, and a few plates, covered with towels to protect from the dust, are brought out. Some are oatmeal with dried fruit, others carob-chip, some plain sugar. "Didn't bring any klah," he says with a wrinkle of his nose, indicating his distaste for the drink, "but there's juice if anyone wants some." A spray of dust from another corner comes their way, and C'len again makes a face at it, turning to protect the cookies further. "Might was well get some more energy for cleaning," all helpful-like. Oenoneth gazes about the room until she looks at one spot, extends her nose in the traditinal draconic greeting... to thin air... before turning and departing. Talien is true to her word, however odd her asking for two helpings of cookies is. Opting for pure sugar on both ends, Talien gives C'len a pleasant enough smile before retreating back to Ayson. "You're lucky," she says off handedly, "Someone could've stolen my broom." Shanlee affords C'len a warm smile as he reveals his cargo "Can always count on you to take of the niceties in life." Snagging a couple of carob-chip cookies on offer, the greenrider is about to take up the offer of klah too when the bronze pair land and R'hin alights with skins in hand. The weyr pretty much put to rights except for a pile of sand that Madison seems to be scrambling over in a protective manner, the Weyrleader is given greeting "Evening Sir. Come to help us?" Candidates gather around her wingleader and hopefully help shield the contents of the basket. Raykini abandons his cleaning, putting down his broom to walk up curiously to C'len, peering over at the cookies and helping himself to one. "I hope you don't mind, sir?" He asks, giving a nod to them. "What are you doing over there, Madison?" he asks, turning curiously over towards the other candidate. "Ah, C'len. You forgot the -proper- drinks? Fortunately I have that covered." R'hin's low voice announces his presence as he steps further in. Pale eyes glitter as he swings the wine skins gingerly, mindful of their contents. "Nothing so civilized as glasses however-- I didn't come that prepared." Brows flicker upwards at Shanlee's query. "Help? Faranth, no," he chortles, eyes sweeping over the weyr. "It seems well enough in hand." Of course the twitch of lips might well indicate his timing is indeed, impeccable and deliberate to boot. Ayson shakes his broom at Madison when she bats at it. "Are you crazy? I'm trying to sweep this pile away." He rolls his eyes and shakes his head. When Talien does return he gives her a thankful look. "I think she's more interested in stealing dirt than your broom." He points out to the older of the two girls. "Thank you for the cookies." His attention slips briefly to the few new riders who have entered the weyr to bring refreshments and check out the cleaning job. "Would you stop that!" Madison says, pushing the broom away before she begins to gently wipe away the sand from the lumps, blowing them off as well. "oh... OH!" She says, bouncing up and down a little. "Look look!" She blows them off some more, just gently brushing them clean. "Look Ayson!" Once the sand is scraped away, six eggs of various pastel hues gleam softly under the touch of light from the glowbasket. Clearly a firelizard has chosen this spot to clutch for the warmth emanating from the neighboring weyr's hearth. C'len ducks his head, hiding a grin, as the cookies and other items are taken and, hopefully, enjoyed. "I only have so many hands--and the ledge isn't that large, so it was harder for Vil to land." Eyes widen slightly in protest. Really. "In any case, glad that I could help out. Baking's a lot easier than--" he turns to watch the candidates' activities, "--cleaning." A twitch of his nose and exhalation of breath, as the dust is kicked up a bit again, and swirls about. Raykini casts his eyes to the others, abandoning his cleaning for now as he peers over at the eggs. "Firelizard eggs?" He asks, standing on the tips of his toes to get a better look. "Wonder how long /they've/ been here...maybe they're rotten. I bet a green forgot about her clutch." he chuckles quietly. Talien's quick to push crumbs back into her mouth with the edge of her finger, choking slightly as she chuckles in reply to Ayson's statement. Polishing off the first cookie with a delighted smacking of her lips, Talien starts on a second and doesn't even pause when Madison's exclamation catches her attention. Pushing onto the tips of her toes to glance past him, she spots the eggs - Raykini's comment garners a dry query in his direction. "You really don't like eggs, do you?" Shalyn glances at the eggs, "No, no, those are a queens eggs. Look quite close to hatching I'd say." Amusement for the Weyrleader's latter comments, glints in Shan's eyes as a hand steals automatically to one of those skins "Ahh...elixir of life." a wink added. Cookie going to mouth, the hand stills for the commotion going on in a corner of the weyr's hearth as candidates quickly gather around at Madison's exclamation. With a sigh of exasperation from the greenrider "Now what?" Raykini's query draws a brow upward, Shalyn's draws a faint smirk "And you would know that how?" "They're beautiful." Madison says, blowing on them still before she pushes up the sand around them with her smallish hands. "Don't hit them!" She looks over her shoulder. "If they're gonna hatch, we need food for 'em right? Don't they like to eat when their babies? I don't want them to be hungry." Madison's protective streak bares itself again as she looks down at the sand. "Are you going to hatch lil ones?" She coos at the eggs. From under Shalyn's hair, Cassie cheeples and pokes her head out. Shalyn smiles, "Because I've been dealing with queen lizard eggs since I was six turns old. I have a clutch about ready to hatch at the moment myself." Raykini shrugs his shoulders, "I don't know, I'm just expressing my thoughts. I don't know why I'm being ganged up on." He lifts up a hand, scratching at the side of his head and turning to peer at the wall. "I like the eggs, you're the one that was going about having 'em for breakfast on the sands." Ayson pulls his broom away. "What?" He seems a little annoyed with her intrusion into his cleaning. Looking down however his expression soon melts away with surprise when he sees what she uncovers. "Huh. Well, no. I don't think they're rotten or a greens eggs, Ray." He eyes the soft gleam. "They seem healthy." He casts a glance at the previously choking Talien. "Able to breathe?" He grins, biting into one of the cookies. Shalyn backs away from the eggs, "So I _reallly_ don't want to be around incase they hatch into one of my hands. One queen is enough for me." R'hin's quiet snicker as Shanlee snatches one of those skins comes readily enough. "An extra one added especially for you, wingsecond." Pale eyes glitter with amusement, setting them carefully to one side where they won't get accidentally knocked. He's taken note of the commotion around the candidates, but isn't paying it much heed yet. Instead, he's eyeing C'len's cookies musingly, hands folded across his chest, casual, though Shalyn's words draw his attention soon enough. "The greenrider's quite the... little expert on many a topic, Shan," his dry comment is offered. "They're really pretty, and that was Nathien, Swimmy." Madison says, grinning a bit as she hovers over the eggs protectively, still scooping up sand and making sure that they're all warm. "You think they're a gold's? Where would she be then?" She wonders. "Aren't they always around?" She looks to the others. "I mean, the queen is always on the sands, so." She giggles a bit, looking down at the pile. Talien's peace offering is the uneaten half of her cookie held out in Raykini's direction, "Truce?" To the ganged up comment, likely, as Talien looks moderately abashed toward the accusation. She doesn't linger on Raykini to see if he takes it though continues to hold it out to him in offer. Looking to Ayson she notes, "Completely out of breath... I'll collapse at any second now." Ticking a salute in return to R'hin, Shan grins "My most heartfelt thanks Sir." Skin in hand, uncorking as she goes, the wingsecond steps over to the pile studying the glistening eggs. "I beg to differ Shalyn. I'd say they still have at least another sevenday or so." Perhaps it's her involvement in the firelizard warning project that allows the greenrider this knowledge "Besides. Gold's don't leave their clutches. Greens do." To Madison "Put some sand back into that bucket and gently scoop each egg into it. Be sure to cover them over properly again." A backward glance to the Weyrleader and wingleader "We can put them on the hearth in the living cavern until they're ready?" the light tone querying. Raykini wrinkles his nose a little before taking the cookie in his hand, smiling rather happily, "Thank you." he says quite happily, stuffing it into his mouth with a rather contented grin. "We don't get these a lot." He stands a bit higher on the tips of his toes, bouncing a bit up and down to try and get a better look, "There's...six?" He asks, swaying back and forth to try and see them better. "I was going to say, if it was a gold's clutch, wouldn't she still be around?" And, quickly, the candidate looks around as if to try and sight the missing gold. "Yes ma'am." Madison says, reaching out and scooping sand into the bucket before she tenderly takes each egg and nestles it into the sand, covering each one back up. She takes quite a while at this, trying to keep the eggs from being jostled around too much. "Hope she's okay if she's a goldie." She says, covering each egg with the appropriate amount of sand. "There you go." She says to the bucket. "They're back in!" She says. Ayson laughs at Talien's comment. "I suppose we better get you something to drink, before you collapse?" His eyes linger once more on the eggs. "Green, huh? Well I guess that makes sense with the number of eggs too. But I don't know what I'm talking about." The man finishes with a shrug and quick grin, brushing twiggy hair aside. Dropping back to her feet, Talien shoots Ayson a wink. "If I drink I'm /really/ gonna collapse then." Her eyes slide suggestively toward Shanlee and the skin the woman holds, "Folks would string me up, too-" Later words are mumbled under her breath, though Talien looks amused enough that they mightn't be all that bad. Reclaiming her broom, Talien pulls it against her stomach, "Six," is her confirmation to Raykini, "Guess we won't know what 'till they hatch." "Ma'am?" Madison asks of Shanlee while she has the bucket held protectively against her chest. "Do you want me to take care of them? I will in addition to my chores." She mentions to the Rider. "I'll make sure they're warm and that no one messes with them." She tells her, looking at the others around her. "And make sure they don't get smashed or hurt or anything." "More 'lizards for the warning system?" C'len suggests, but other than that he doesn't seem too interested in the sudden brouhaha over the eggs. The cookies, though: he's had one of each of the sugar and oatmeal, saving his favorite for last and selecting one of the remaining carob chip. The rider leans against a relatively clean wall of the weyr, enjoying the moment's rest from duties. Satisfied with how Madison re-arranges the eggs back into the bucket, Shan stands and finally bites into a cookie running an eye around the now clean weyr. Ayson's hair catches her attention, chewing and swallowing "I think Maddie was wrong about you. Twiggy seems far more appropriate then Lumpy right now." a grin follows. Talien's eying of the skin, has the greenrider waggle it around a little in a tantalizing manner "C'len's got juice too." Which brings her back to her wingleader's opening comment "I can only hope so C'len. We need all we can get." "Mm." R'hin's steps closer to study the small clutch over Shanlee's shoulder a moment, before glancing back over at C'len. "Perhaps. Last time we allowed those that discovered the clutch to decide what to do with it, however. Precedent," a curve of lips, amused, "Has been set." Ayson shakes his head, amused. "I was thinking more along juice or water, whichever one C'len has brought along?" Shanlee's words cause him to grin more, as he just drops his hands away from his hair. "It's futile. I really a need a brush and some soap. I resembles some sort of woodland monster right now." To the confirmation that C'len has juice. "Ah, see. Wineskins aren't your only option." Raykini nods his head slowly as he watches the eggs for a moment, finally taking a step backwards, "I suppose we will find out, won't we?" he asks, looking for confirmation between the riders. Noyi gives a quiet little chirp, shifting his wings a bit as he eyes the other firelizards. "Why wine? Can I have a cookie? Someone just shove it in my mouth please," Madison's got a deathgrip on that bucket. "I don't want to make 'em just work for us. I mean, we found 'em. We gotta take care of them. We're all like their mommies 'n daddies now." A point that hits very home with Madison. "I'm /not/" her voice drops and those that have seen her dig her heels into something can recognize the change immediately. "going to be a bad mommy." Shanlee's lips purse in thought for a moment at Madison's offer "From what harper Ywain tells me young lady it would be best if I take them into my care." a pointed look following with a faint smile to soften the words. Turning chin over shoulder to R'hin "Much appreciated it's been too Sir." Talien looks a little more interested in the wine than she does the eggs, but Madison's statement garners her attention almost as much as the earlier statements. "Need all we can get, I suppose," Talien echoes of Shanlee with another look in the woman's direction. "It's what they do, anyways." she adds to Madison, trying to garner Lumpy and Raykini's support for such with looks to each. Wineskin drawn to lips and a long swallow taken, Shan brushes the back of her hand across her lips. "You found them Maddie. You decide." The tone and smile suggesting this really were up to not only Madison but each of the candidates present. "If you guys each impress a firelizard from these eggs. You can choose to participate in the training program or not. It's not a requirement or an expectation." qualification given.
Ayson winces a little when he recognizes that tone in Madison's voice. He turns around and says tentatively, "Whoever impresses to these eggs is going to care for them, and be a good caretaker. No one is going to just work them for the sake of working." His head inclines to Shanlee. "And what she said. No one is forced. But allowing them to be trained to do so, will help the weyr in a lot of ways." This said, he closes his mouth and moves away a tiny bit. "He's so scared he wont even hook a trundle on a hook." Madison says, hugging the bucket closer to her chest as she furrows her brow downwards at Shanlee's suggestion that she keep them. "But you have to go out and do rider chores and everything. What if they get cold?" She asks, looking from Talien to Ayson and Raykini. She gives a bit of a glower before she takes a few steps towards Shanlee. "You promise you'll take care of them?" She asks before she nods. "I think that we should raise them. They can do whatever they want with them, as long as they treat them nice." She turns toawrds the others and glares at each other candidate, balefully. "Just like what Ayson said. Everyone will take care of them, like they were their own little babies." She says this in a slow and deliberate manner before turning back to Shanlee and giving her a toothy smile. "Here." She holds out the pail. "Keep them safe." Eyes narrow downwards. His last cookie polished off, C'len watches the discussion between his wingsecond and the candidates, waiting to see the decision. "The things can be kind of annoying, really," the rider says, "So consider carefully." A shrug follows the statement, and as he has no firelizard of his own, there isn't one hovering about his person to chastise the statement. "Of course, even the most annoying can sometimes become helpful," he observes with a certain dry tone in his drawl. "As you wish. I'll leave it in your care," R'hin says to Shanlee, offering her a nod. With a tip of head, he exhales, as Leiventh's shadow once more darkens the ledge. "I'm being called away -- enjoy the wine. I hope I'll be back to share the remnants." Turning on a heel, he quickly strides towards the bronze, mounts, and is gone. |
