Of Letting Go
"Mistakes and indiscreations need not be shared or mulled over by another."
RL Date: 7 December, 2006
Who: R'hin, Shanlee
Type: [[Concept:{{{type}}}|{{{type}}}]]
When: Day 11, Month 2, Turn 10 (Interval 10)

Your location's current time: 1:13 on day 11, month 2, Turn 60, of the Tenth Pass. It is a winter night.

You stride towards the lake shore. Lake Shore, High Reaches Weyr This shoreline marks the edge of the freshwater lake that fills the southeastern portion of the bowl. The gritty dirt of the bowl gives way to smooth sand. Dragons often dive from high above the lake into its chilly waters, rinsing away the pungent smell of firestone. Their riders are frequently seen standing along the shoreline, watching on, the waters too brisk for casual swimming. Across the lake, the bowl wall rises high into the sky, its face dotted with weyr entrances. A few dragonlengths above the water, glimpses of a level cliff can be seen amidst boulders lining the edge. Just south of here, a smaller pond of water is divided from the main lake by a natural bridge of land. The water of the pond is frozen solid, an expanse of crystal glass that spreads from shore to shore. A path leads across the bridge and up to the diving cliffs, winding through a dotting of small boulders on its way. The night is clear, not a cloud to be seen, giving you a perfect view of the stars. The smaller Belior shines in half moon while Timor shines brightly as a full moon. The air is calm, with no hint of breeze. The water's glasslike surface mirrors the cliff walls and sky above. It's fairly late at night, and cold enough that the lake area's all but deserted. Perhaps that's why R'hin's here, running the well-worn track around the lake's edge, looking to have been at it for some time. A towel rests on 'his' rock over nearer the bowl area, along with a heavier jacket.

Snuggled into a thick blanket and leaning against Kaylith's warm side, Shan holds a quiet conversation with the green "They're stars Kaylith.....no it's too far......". Snatches of which are barely heard. Kaylith cranes her neck up to peer at the blinking lights in the night sky, then brings it back to peer at her rider. A movement catches her attention and she nudges at Shan, who in turn follows her lifemate's line of interest. "I don't know love, I can't see properly"

There's a sense of ease in R'hin's movements, running without thinking - everything on autopilot as his mind concentrates on other matters. Thus it's no great surprise that his path takes him past where Kaylith and Shanlee are ensconced without initially noting their presence. Several steps later, he slows, turning, taking the pair in with a mixture of surprise and puzzlement. His breathing is heavy from the run, hands settling on his hips as he walks back towards the pair. "Shanlee?" the name is spoken more as a quizzical prompt than any uncertainty of her identity. Kaylith is given a tip of his head by way of greeting, though pale eyes shift quickly back to the woman.

As the jogging figure nears, Shan follows the progress with interest. The familiar male voice has her squinting slightly as the form is silhouetted against Belior and Timor's light. Leaning away slightly from Kaylith's warmth Shan sits upright as recognition dawns, pushing herself up to stand blanket wrapped tightly "Evening Sir" a salute follows briefly. "I didn't realise there was anyone else out her" her voice fades slightly as Kaylith croons a greeting to the new human.

The salute elicits a tip of head, but not a return in kind; R'hin studies Shanlee for moments longer in a fashion that could easily be uncomfortable. "Nor did I," he finally returns with a low-throated chuckle, running a hand through hair dampened somewhat by sweat. All the many things he might be expected to say as an authority figure are pointedly lacking in the silence that follows. Only this, softly, sympathetically: "Looking for some solitude?"

Kaylith's silent query is met with a brief answer. The longer R'hin's eyes regard her, the more Shan starts to wonder if she's inadvertantly contravened some or other rule by being out so late at night. Meeting his pale gaze Shan contemplates her answer a moment before replying "Something like that" a faint hint of a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "You're welcome to join us" a brief turn to regard her lifemate "That is if you're finished with your.....uh...exercise was it?"

The evasive answer earns a twitch of lips from the Weyrleader, who turns on a heel and strides towards his rock. R'hin leans down, scoops up his towel and jacket, and walks closer to Shanlee. "It's harder to find the time these days, to simply run. I did a lot of it during weyrlinghood," and he gives a wry smile, "It's probably the one thing I actually kept up." He tosses the jacket onto a nearby rock, running the towel over his face and neck.

Watching as R'hin retrieves his towel and jacket, Shan smiles "I've never really been much of a runner, always preferred swimming, but...." a shrug of slight shoulders "Guess I'll have to take it up during winter to meet the Weyrlingmaster's command to stay fit" Lowering herself to the ground again and cuddling back against Kaylith's warmth, she peers up at the Weyrleader "It must difficult for you to have time for much of anything these days."

Slinging the towel over his shoulder, R'hin gives a wave of hand towards the lake. "Swimming would work, too - it's not that long before winter's over. You and Kaylith might be flying by then, anyway." He says, speculatively, pale eyes drifting towards the green and giving her a careful, evaluative look. "Difficult," he agrees, "But not impossible. I -make- time, for what I wish to do."

Kaylith's wings rustle slightly when R'hin mentions flying, bringing a low chuckle from Shan "That we might just be - she's determined to get to that as soon as she can" a fond stroke along a green forearm "Luckily Dasmareth has managed to explain the dangers of doing so too early in a way that she's content for now to just follow the exercises Weyrsecond Rilsa laid out to strengthen her wings and legs" Quite a speech for so late at night, but where her lifmate was concerned, Shan couldn't help it. "No matter how hard I try at the moment I don't seem to be able to make time for much else other than Kaylith right now" an almost wistful tone to her voice as R'hin's last comment is added too.

R'hin, evidentially, isn't inclined to be still at all; as Shanlee talks, he begins stretching out, one foot braced against the rock as he leans slowly forward. "It'll go fast enough," the bronzerider assures, with a fond, reminiscent smile, "Though it probably doesn't feel like it." He lets his foot drop, switching to the other side, glancing over at Shanlee sidelong as he does. "You won't, for a while. There's a lot you need to learn - both of you, as much about each other as about being a rider." A beat, as he considers her. "How are you two settling in to each other?" An odd question, perhaps, offhand if not for the fact he's watching her closely.

As R'hin stretches and talks Shan watches carefully, green eyes flicking between him and her lifemate. Lips purse slightly "A lot to learn" she confirms. Her gaze settles on Kaylith, whose swung her head around to watch the Weyrleader's actions with interest before wuffling at Shan's hair gently. "We've had our days" an amused tone is spoken in "But generally we've managed better than others have seemed to - she's just a right chatterbox, but I'm getting used to it and am learning what to pay mind to and what not to"

Straightening, R'hin stretches hands above his head before dropping them back down with a shift of his shoulders. Despite the chill air, he's made no move yet to put on his jacket, head tipping in acknowledgement of her comment. "I still have-- those days," he chuckles a little, glance straying unerringly across the bowl, undoubtedly in Leiventh's direction. "I'm glad. Some bear it better than others. It's not... it's not always easy to be loved and depended on so completely. Rather like parenthood, I've been told, though I can't say from personal experience."

Okay, so if he was going to stand there and stretch and things Shan was going to notice, a brief twitch of a smile before following R'hin's gaze to where his own lifemate must be warmly ensconced. Mention of parenthood brings about a roll of eyes "Ughh.....parenthood - half the reason I left home, only to end up with the biggest baby on Pern" Shan teases her lifemate "Yes, I know love - you're growing up everyday" she shakes her head in amusement "My brother finds it hilarious" Noticing he still hadn't put his jacket back on "You'd better get that jacket on before you catch a cold" a concerned note enters her tone "And that would make your life far more complicated. Sneezing on Holders during a meeting wouldn't go down too well" a cheeky grin spreads across her face.

"Just remember," R'hin's tone is easy, but no less truthful for all that, "That -she- has to live with you as much as you with her." A faint curl of lips into a smile is no doubt intended to soften the words. "Your brother is here?" he inquires, interested. Hands lift defensively, though the Weyrleader takes the concerned tone in good spirits, pale eyes glittering as he responds, "Ah, but I'd have a viable excuse for not meeting the Holders, then, would I not?" He tugs the somewhat damp towel off his shoulder, slinging it onto the rock next to his jacket.

Shanlee says "And for that I pity her at times" Shan quips "Raiveen has made it clear he intends warding any poor soul off for their own sake more than mine" a dramatic sigh is added "Not that I'm the least bit interested, but I can't be -that- bad can I?" Kaylith rumblechuckles before quickly crooning an apology. "No he's not here, but we keep in touch via flitter mail" a soft longing to see her brother again is apparent in Shan's tone" As R'hin moves toward his jacket Shan chuckles "The Holder's may not see it that way though."

R'hin's grin, despite the fact that he can't hear the exchange between dragon and weyrling, is definitely amused. "Well, the good news is that you've the advantage over her in the memory department. The bad news is, that she retains the right of draconic privilege, something that Leiventh seems to invoke far too often. Under Shanlee's gaze, he grudgingly tugs on his jacket, though he's undoubtedly overacting it on purpose. "Oh, I'm sure they'd -much- prefer Jos, than Jos -and- me. She's less inclined to ruffle feathers."

R'hins pulling on of his jacket puts an ill-hidden smile to Shan's lips "Oh come now - still worrying about those rumours? I'm sure you can be quite charming when you have a mind to be" she quips. "Draconic privilege would encompass exactly what?" interest sparks behind green eyes, as a head is leant against Kaylith's side lazily "I may as well know what I've let myself into here."

"I can be charming," R'hin agrees, "But I don't often have a mind to be." It's probably hard to tell if he's being facetious or not, but either way he's grinning crookedly as he shoves his hands into the pockets of his jacket. "Draconic privilege," he explains, leaning back against the rock, "Is when your dragon answers one of your queries with some variation of 'because'. For example: Leiventh, why can't we leave the Weyr today? Because we are needed. Leiventh, why did Saindyth search that boy? Because he is right. Etcetera--" the recitation is accompanied by a shifting of voices, Leiventh's somewhat deeper than his own.

Shanlee eyes R'hin speculatively for a moment as if trying to decide if he spoke the truth or not "Not often huh?" amusement tinting her voice. "Oh right - Draconic privilege - I've come across that one once or twice already" Shan nudges Kaylith playfully in the side with her elbow "It's rather hard to argue against isn't it? They seem so sure of themselves, with such an age of undeniable wisdom behind their statements - you really tend to end up without a leg to stand on." Kaylith regards the two humans with slowing whirling eyes, as if to convey that of course that were the case, how else would it be.

Leiventh> To you, Leiventh, listening in, is bemused. « I do not sound like that, » he denies.

"Uh-huh," R'hin agrees, "That's it exactly. You can't argue with that particular brand of logic." His grin widens abruptly. "Leiventh objects to my personification of him. But that's probably because he can't remember. Still, we all need our little victories, do we not?" The question, it seems, is rhetorical, pale eyes settling on Kaylith in kind, the green's expression eliciting a low-throated chuckle from the Weyrleader. "She has quite a bit more of her sire in her than is probably good for you." An odd statement, perhaps, but undoubtedly intended as a compliment, for Kaylith if nothing else. He bends down to retrieve his towel, bundling it up into a ball.

A sigh escapes, albeit completely faked "And I do so love to argue" Shan despairs wryly. "Their short term memory however, can be both a boon and an irritation depending on which side of a situation you're standing" she notes. R'hin's comment on Kaylith's parentage gets an almost worried look "Not good for me? I'm hoping that's meant in the mildest possible way" tilting her own head back to peer up at Kaylith's, who merely blinks her multiple lids at her lifemate, no comment there. "Now you have nothing to say" Shan mutters to her.

"Leiventh," R'hin says, with a tap of finger against the side of his head, "Seems inclined to rummage around in here at will, to make up for his lack." At Shanlee's comment and the look towards her dragon, the Weyrleader's silent a moment, offering in a particularly bland tone, "Well, we shall see, in time. For now, though, I could use a hot bath, and then, I think, bed. I'd hope you and Kaylith aren't that far behind. I'm sure you'll have a morning that's just as early and packed as my own..?" the slight lilt at the end turns it into a question, though not one that seems to require an answer. Instead, he tips head towards Kaylith.

Pushing away from Kaylith, placing a hand on the ground, Shan rises to stand too. The cold wind causes a shiver to run through her. "I'm still trying to learn how to keep her out of certain parts of my head" a shrug "I"m not always successful though" R'hins words on a hot bath and bed, have Shan realising just how sleepy she is "Sounds like a good idea - we have an assignment set us, that somehow I have to figure out over the next sevenday" Kaylith lumbers to her feet, and extending her neck croons the Weyrleader's way "She say to tell you, it was an honour to meet Leivanth's Rider" Shan grins up at R'hin. "Thanks for the chat Sir, it's been most enlightening."

A couple of quick steps brings R'hin to Shanlee's side, offering her a hand to help her rise. His voice is low, briefly troubled: "It's not easy, to keep them out." He hesitates, briefly. "And it's not really a good idea. As much as we might not wish them to shine light into the dark parts of ourselves, we all must have someone, -one- we can trust completely with ourselves. And what are our dragons, if not that?" His hand lifts, palm up, gesturing towards Kaylith, a smile tugging at his lips at the words passed on. "More of an honor for me to meet Kaylith's," he responds in kind to the green, before nodding towards Shanlee. "You're very welcome."

A silence meets R'hin's words, green eyes look out over the lake surface, before they swing back to regard the Weyrleader, a shadow hidden in them "I know you're right, but......." the tone soft as words trail off, leaving the rest unsaid. "I'm not to used to having that yet I guess - someone who won't judge or accuse" a slight knitting of arched brows "Mistakes and indiscreations need not be shared or mulled over by another." her voice barely audible. Kaylith nudges the small of her Rider's back and warbles gently. This brings about a mental shake and an obvious shift in attitude, the grin of just a moment ago slowly returning "Clear Skies Sir and my regards to Leiventh" before turning back towards the Barracks "We'd best all get some sleep"

"Nor am I," is R'hin's faint, almost unheard response as he turns away. "Good night, to you both." The Weyrleader's steps are quick, carrying him across the bowl purposefully.

You go north towards the main bowl area.
