Storerooms, High Reaches Weyr

Massive in scale, the Weyr's main storage passage connects to the kitchen on one end and the outbound tunnel on the other. Large enough to admit a wagon laden with goods, the tunnel easily permits the unloading and organization of supplies into the various storerooms.

Branching off from this corridor are multiple caverns, the nearer two being 'open' stores from which residents can readily help themselves, while the deeper stores are kept locked up tight with a posted sign and inventory hung on a hook outside of each. An alcove next to the public stores serves as a catch-all area for reshelving items whose destination is uncertain; two sets of stone shelving and several bins hold these items neatly until a stores assistant has a moment to deal with them.

Though the storage caverns vary in size, shape, and the smoothness of their walls, all belong to the same system: whitewashed walls, swept floors, and most importantly, neatly labeled and inventoried shelves providing ample space to stow all the supplies a busy Weyr needs. Though there's no direct internal lighting, a glowbasket may be brought in from the niche outside each cavern, the better to ward off pests and the inky dark of deep caves.

Mid-morning sees a break between classes, lectures and everything else, as the weyrlings have been let off a little early for their lunch break. Wanting to put that time to good use, several of the class have ventured down into the storage caverns and are rooting mostly through the furniture section, looking for... well, anything that might go well in the weyrs they'll all be moving into soon. N'ky is amongst the group, though he doesn't look quite as engrossed by the task at hand as some of the others do, as he's sitting off to one side on a mattress, cross-legged and thoughtful.

With the furniture section as crowded as it was, Tela and one of the other greenriders had ventured elsewhere, though after awhile the former can't seem to resist returning to see if it's eased up at all... or maybe it's just out of excitement for the box tucked under her arm. She intercepts someone who's even more thrilled about a bed set ("Just like the carving my grandda used to do, I swear it!") and duly admires it before continuing to thread her way down the next aisle, scanning like she's not so much hunting as keeping an eye out for what might leap out at her. And N'ky doesn't seem to be doing much leaping, sitting as he is, but she stops anyway, with a hand lightly on the table next to him. "Trying it out?"

N'ky looks up from where he was staring pretty much into his lap, brown eyes glancing over Telavi thoughtfully. He shifts his weight, bounces a little on the spot to test the springyness of the mattress beneath him, then shrugs. "It's... it's o-ok." He pats the surface beside him, tilting his head to invite the fellow greenrider down to join him. "I'm, um, I'm not s-sure." She may notice he's stuttering less, speaking with a little more confidence... or not.

Perhaps not this very moment. Tela does sit, after a glance up and down the mattress that double-checks that there aren't any suspicious stains, perching on the edge so she doesn't get her shoes on it and balancing the box in her own lap. "Hm." She glances at the other weyrling then.

Bouncing a little more perhaps brings him to more of a conclusion, because N'ky shrugs. "I dunno." Bouncebounce - for good measure, of course. Then he lies back, stretches out his long legs, wriggles to get comfortable, and then huffs. "No." Up he comes again, propped up with hands on the mattress behind him. "Wh-what did you find?"

Tela's already begun to grin at him for that wriggling, and the huff only heightens it. Not that there's a low baseline, given the proprietary pleasure with which she pats her find. "Better luck with the next one. This, this is someone's old sewing kit, and I've already signed it out, I just can't wait to rummage through it! There's a darling pincushion and a pair of snips and it was just right there, in intake, so it hadn't had everything taken out of it yet and there I was, it was destiny."

"Oh yeah," N'ky's remembering a conversation long past, "you like to s-sew, right?" He rocks over onto his knees, then pushes up to his feet, offering Telavi his hand if she wants to get up, too. "I've f-found... nothing. But, um, I guess there'll be time enough when w-we've got our weyrs, right?" His hands slip into his pockets and he rocks on his feet, raising on tiptoes to see as far as he can along the furniture aisles. "Though I b-bet the best ones will be t-taken by then."

Tela stops batting her lashes adoringly at her find, though she can't seem to resist giving it another pat before she glances up, then takes his hand and rises to her feet. "I do! And besides, it's not as though we really have so much room in the barracks, do we? Who knows, our weyrs might come with furniture already, which wouldn't be bad as long as it's not ghastly, we'll have Turns to make it just so. The beds might be different sizes, even," with a nod to the mattress he'd rejected, that therefore might or might not fit. "And of course the best ones will be taken, we're weyrlings. That bothers you?"

N'ky wrinkles his nose a little, thinking about her lattermost question. "Um, w-well... I'd l-like to have somewhere nice for Cailluneth a-and myself... um... won't nice f-furniture do that?" He stcks his thumbs through his trousers' beltloops, rocking on his toes. "I've n-not really thought about a-anything of it, to be honest."

She stretches, very much more at ease here, where she's not expected to fly. Though even that has improved somewhat, after spending so much of the last few days in the air, like it or not. "Nice furniture is nice and all, but it's not as though she'll be sitting at your table, is it? If you even have a table... maybe I'll just go with a flat-topped chest in front of the couch. If I can get a couch, if there's room for a couch, who knows. The important part is that it smells good, that it's clean, and that it's yours." This time, when Tela smiles at him, her dimples show momentarily. "My opinion, anyway."

"I'd, um, j-just like s-somewhere to sleep, really. Maybe just a mattress? Th-that's all I'll need, right?" N'ky kicks at one by his feet, testing his toes against it. And hey, it feels nice! Or so one would assume, since he sinks down onto it, lying on his side with his arm as a pillow. "This one I like. Th-this one's... um..." He bounces again, but there's something distinctly more grown up in the way he does it, rather than toddler-esque like before.

"I suppose?" though Tela looks a little doubtful. "As long as you have somewhere to put your clothes, so you have the clean ones separate from the dirty ones. You will fold them, won't you? Not be all, 'This is my own place, I will have dirty clothes hanging from every possible location if I wanna'?" She doesn't move to sit on this mattress, but rather stays standing back so he can do what he wants with it and she can watch with a hint of a smile.

N'ky flops over onto his back, hands resting on his stomach, fingers laced together. "A p-press?" So not enthusiastic over that. "Folding clothes?" Even less enthusiasm there. "I, um, just thought I'd be... I dunno." Up he gets again, slipping hands into his pockets this time once he's standing. "I k-kinda like living in the barracks." His weight shifts from one foot to the other, gaze lifting up and over to see who's where from their pre-lunch group. "I've never slept alone before."

Yes, folding clothes. Tela doesn't say it out loud, it's hard enough to keep back a grin as it is. "Maybe they'll let you stay. It's fun, though I only had about six months of it, when my roommate moved out to get married." She makes a face. "Married, in a Weyr. But she writes, says she's happy... and you'll have Cailluneth, so it won't be alone really, will it?" Her tone's altered slightly, but then she's fiddling with her box again, could be she's just distracted.

Hands still deep in his pockets, N'ky looks thoughtfully at a nearby chair. "Cailluneth's d-different," he says with a gentle shrug. He sinks down into the chair, tests it, then gets up again. "Th-here are some, um, b-boxes over there. W-want to come unpack them with me?" Getting up from the chair, he tilts his head in the direction he means as an invitation, before striding off to go dig through packed boxes on his own, if needs be.

He starts off, then Tela glances up and down the aisles, as though that would help inspiration strike. But then she shrugs, "Why not?" and not just follows but moves to quickly catch up. But be warned... even if she's already got the box with one hand, the other's terribly quick if there's something good.

I'm really enjoying these 'weyrlings rummaging around for weyr-stuff' scenes. It's interesting to see the blend in this class- some are excited about getting weyrs, others are apprehensive. Some just go with the flow. Telavi is still a dust-covered ferret to me, even more so with her super quick snatching hands! GOODIES!
