| Part 1 Ever since the flight, Teisyth had added the excitement of eggs to her daily conversational repertoire with G'laer. He'd privately hoped she'd forget once Hraedhyth's flight was a few days off, but remembering that she'd talked about them just yesterday was enough. He now had to hope that the Hatching would be memorable enough that they wouldn't have to talk about non-existent eggs daily once it was over. G'laer almost felt bad when, after one morning that was particularly frought with egg questions to which he had no answer, he made the mistake of telling the green she should just ask Hraedhyth since she was the one growing egg heavy, not G'laer. ... So she did. Daily. Sometimes more. Question after question after question. The queen, fortunately, didn't seem to be bothered and was generally patient with eager Teisyth who, somehow took it into her head that even though she bore virtually no actual relation to the eggs that she would be auntie to all that were hatched. G'laer tried dissuading her of the idea because dragons don't have those sorts of relations, but Teisyth was quite sure he must be mistaken, because how could she be their auntie if dragons didn't have aunties? And she was their auntie; so G'laer was obviously wrong. He gave up because he had no want to get trapped in her circular logic. Sometimes she wanted to know about the process of having eggs that she would never know, « Can you feel the eggs growing inside you? » and « Do you know what colors are in there? Do bronzes feel extra heavy because they're bigger? » But it wasn't long before she started thinking more about her own role in all of this. « Ooo, G'laer, you'll see! I'm gonna find Hraedhyth the best candidates. Can we start now? I'm sure I can find them even a'fore the eggs come? » Which led to a new series of questions to the queen about what she wanted for her eggs. G'laer had his doubts that Teisyth would think someone capable of weakness, dishonesty, or being bad for the Weyr, when she insisted that « Anyone can be anything they set their mind to~ » in that absurdly optimistic way she has. Of course, she's still convinced Lythronath could be a perfect gentleman if that's what he wanted to be. But he just doesn't, and that's fine. The man concluded he'd have to keep a close watch on her when it came time to actually start Searching.
It's only the day after the clutching, for fuck's sake, Teisyth! « Ooo, but G'laer! I just know these nine girls are perfect for the clutch! Can't I pretty please with extra wherry blood Search 'em all? » Teisyth, one of them nearly fainted when she saw you. Didn't Hraedhyth want strong, warriors for her eggs? « Oh, but that was just 'cause I'm so fearsome, G'laer. Can y'really blame her? » G'laer wasn't a man given to an abundance of expression via his hands, but his palm was hitting his forehead and dragging down his face before he knew he'd willed the motion. Part 3 During Jadzia's Search. « YES! » No! « Pleeeeeeease! » Teisyth whined. « It's perfect, G'laer! I just know she'd be good for the clutch! An' she's right, you do owe her. » I do not. « Yes, y'do. » No, I don't. « Do. » Don't. « Do soooo! » She sing-songed at him. He hated that. Fine. But only because she'd be a good rider. « Of course she would! I Searched her, after all. » Teisyth guffawed happily. « A warrior too. I dun told Hraedhyth I'd be the best dern Search dragon ever, an' I am! Aren't I, G'laer? » Too hopeful. He hated that. No. « Sure, I am. G'laer, have I ever told you sometimes I think you just like bein' wrong? » |
