| Your location's current time: 15:37 on day 26, month 12, Turn 59, of the Tenth Pass. It is a winter afternoon. You stride into the tunnel to the living cavern. Living Cavern, High Reaches Weyr(#1000RJs) The impressive living cavern is seemingly as large as the bowl that cradles the hatching sands. Rivers of polished wood tables and benches arrow towards a raised platform crowned with a compact version of their sturdy design. Neatly crafted pegs, some fancifully carved, are tapped into holes in the wall and support clothing dangling like lazy sleepers. Woven baskets, both useful and decorative, hang along another wall. The air is redolent with the smell of burning conifer wood blended with the myriad odors of the bakery's spices and the kitchen's succulent offerings. Banners worked with the designs of Holds and Halls beholden to the weyr cascade down the walls high above, interspersed with several brilliantly colored tapestries. Small groups gather here and there in the cavern, relaxing over a snack of freshly baked goodies as they cheerfully gossip. She chews thoughtfully on her lower lip as she regards the people already in the caverns, but it's only a second's worth and the young woman is heading straight for the sweets. Her plate is filled with desserts, with a side of actual meal, before she's found a seat in which to enjoy the meal, basking in the warmth of one of the hearths and in reach of the klah pot. Rugged up against the chill winter's afternoon, R'hin's being paced by one of his wingriders, the Weyrleader's expression somewhere between casual interest and distracted boredom. Priya, of the eternally sour expression, seems to be expounding the many faults of the bronzerider. "Could you say it a little louder, Priya?" R'hin interrupts when she briefly pauses for breath. "Oh, look. Our new Journeyman. I ought to greet her- sorry, duty calls." The Weyrleader gives a mock apologetic smile, steering deliberately towards Kasiese, greeting her with, "Pretend I'm giving you a warm welcome, and that you've invited to join you for a meal?" There... might be a hint of begging in there, too. Priya's vocal proclamations of R'hin's shortcomings isn't missed on Kasiese. She ducks her head and hides behind a forkful of steaming pie, the better which to smile around. Her expression, however, melts into one of wide-eyed innocence when he approaches her table. She sneaks the forkfull into her mouth, smiling at the Weyrleader while deliberating his situation. It only takes her a few moments to nod, deciding honoring his request isn't too difficult after all, and pointing towards the chair across from her. She at least has the manners to swallow prior to saying, hopefully loudly enough to carry to Priya, "Would you care to join me, Sir?" "I'd love to, why thank you, Journeyman," R'hin returns, sliding gratefully into the indicated chair without a glance back, pale eyes glittering. Priya's not looking particularly happy, her 'entertainment' for the evening having abandoned her, and stalks off towards the bowl. R'hin exhales faintly in relief, grinning at Kasiese. "Nice save. I appreciate it. So, I suppose congratulations are in order," he says, with a gesture towards her knot. "I'm glad you've been posted here; Artlan needs the help, I suspect." Kasiese's eyes watch the other rider and her sour expression vacate with a chuckle. "Still just as popular as ever, I see," she teases, curling a leg beneath her in the chair. "And thank you -- I appreciate it. I certainly didn't expect it quite so soon after I got back." As for Artlan, she says, "He's thrilled, even though he keeps telling me to stay out of his way. Even though we're in opposite fields." She wiggles her eyebrows. "Going crazy yet? We'll sit down and I'll analyze your problems." Reaching across the table, R'hin goes for one of the sweets on Kasiese's plate, commenting wryly as he does, "Fantastically popular. How'd you guess?" Lips curl briefly at the mention of Artlan. "So long as I don't have to pull you two apart, I'm content." Brows hitch upwards at Kasiese's latter words, patent amusement in his voice: "Working while dining? -She- needs help more than me, if you're looking for patients." His head jerks vaguely in the direction Priya left in. "It'd just be a bit of practice," Kasiese assures, gaze dropping to his hand as it reaches for her own meal. She lets him take it however; not a good idea to slap the hands of weyrleaders, even if they're pilfering your food. "Working while dining is the best way. You'll be so focused on your apple pie that you won't mind telling me about your childhood or how you feel incomplete even though you're successful and popular." She smirks, watching him sidelong as she scoots the chair back to fill a mug with klah. She holds out one in question as she continues, "And you're just saying she needs help because you don't like her." Allowed or not, R'hin seems fairly pleased with his pilfering, swallowing the stolen treat down fairly swiftly. With a twist of lips, he disagrees, "I like Priya just fine, but I'd rather you turned her into someone who'd crack a smile once in a while. I think the only time I -do- see her smile is when she's with Esrieth - and that's only when she thinks people aren't looking." He flashes a grin as he adds, "And -no- apple pie is good enough to get me to tell you all my childhood fears." "How about berry? Or, possibly, one of those really tasty pot-pies? Or maybe just a couple of childhood fears." Kasiese is just bantering now, apparently done with eating and more interested in nursing her klah. "Maybe her childhood fears are what makes her not smile. Or maybe an accident just messed up the smiling functions," Kasiese guesses. Her attention moves to the exit momentarily, as though she's now seriously considering the ever-serious rider, but she shrugs in the end. Since the healer isn't partaking of the food, R'hin seems to consider that unspoken invitation to take it upon himself. He reaches over and takes another sweet, chuckling under his breath at Kasiese's ruminations. "Don't know, but she'll make for an interesting case I'm sure - if you can convince her of the need." The amusement fades as he eyes Kasiese with interest, taking in that serious expression, voice low: "You're a fine healer, Journeyman. It's a good thing, not to give away one's career." Kasiese lets him take the food with only a ghost of a smile. "I'm sure she's got her reasons," Kasiese says, mouth quirking off to the side in consideration. "I'll have to remember to talk to her, even if it's only for a minute." A beat of silence leaves Kasi tilting her head slightly to the side, regarding the bronzerider almost suspiciously. "I imagine," she agrees finally, curling her fingers around the mug. "You imagine?" R'hin echoes, imitating Kasiese's suspicious tone precisely, though his lips twitch a bit as he does so. "You don't think it a good thing?" Kasiese smiles slightly, now, probably more at his mimicry than anything. "I agree," she says with a slow nod, her tone one that retcons her former statement. "Okay. I wasn't sure, because for a moment it looked like you were searching for the knife I'd hidden behind my back." R'hin's tone is wry, though pale eyes are steady on Kasiese, not a hint of amusement shining in them. It seems he's done with picking at her food, leaning back a little. Kasiese shakes her head, eyes widening slightly. "No," she assures. "I just don't quite understand why everyone thinks you're so...bad." One shoulder hitches in a shrug. "You're not -that- bad. So I guess I'm back to square one, right when I met you. Just slightly confused." With a sweet smile, she asks, "Sure you don't have any childhood memories you want to share?" R'hin's head tips, and a slow, coy smile spreads across his lips. "Ah," is his initial response, hands lifting up to fold behind his head. "Surely, though, as a mindhealer you understand about perception? If you asked, say, Melata, or B'yan, I'm sure you'd hear quite a different side of me than what you ordinarily see. In fact, I think you should do just that. It would be... interesting." Pale eyes glitter briefly, and he answers her in kind: "I pulled a girl's hair once. Actually, several times. Doubt she'll ever forgive me for it. That do?" "Of course I understand perception," Kasiese says. "Well, the concept. Not really the entire...percieving. Like you -- you've got your moments. But so do I. And everyone else." A beat. "Yeah, I'm going to have to ask around." She grins. "What better way to find out childhood secrets." She frowns mockingly at him. "-I- once pulled a girl's hair," the healer says dryly. "But if it keeps you up nights, yeah, it'll do." "It does," R'hin says, "I'm worried I've turned her into someone like... Priya--" his head tips vaguely towards the bowl, though the faint twitch of lips suggests he's merely being facetious. He appears cheered by the thought of Kasiese with a mission. "Do I at least get to hear the results, since it'll be about me? And I am, after all, very self-absorbed and ego-centric - though I'll leave it up to you to find the childhood motivator for that particular personality trait." "I'm sure it does," Kasiese laughs. "I'm sure you spend nights awake crying over the thought of turning that poor girl into a mostly emotionless statue of a person." She shakes her head, saying, "Ah, well -- you'd have to consult with me first. You know, knowing all this horrible stuff - or, maybe not so horrible - could develop a complex. Or an emotional breakdown." She smiles wryly. "I'd hate to think of it. "A complex? Me? Highly doubtful. I've very many people who remind me daily of my particular place in the world," R'hin says meaningfully, chuckling under his breath. "Some of them, are even wise." His hands unfold, and he shifts his shoulders as he makes to rise. "I appreciate the save," he says, with a smile, a clear prelude to departure. "A complex? You? Maybe." Kasiese says. "Sounds like you've got one already - I mean, really; your place is wherever you put yourself." As he stands, Kasiese nods. "Good luck not being spotted on the way out. And I'll let you know if I find anything out." That, more than anything, amuses R'hin; he chuckles in clear agreement. "True enough, true enough," he allows with a smile. "I appreciate that, Kasiese. It's good to have you with us." A wave of his hand seems to indicate the Weyr as a whole, the flourish continuing as he heads for the lower caverns. You meander through the archway, into the lower caverns. |
