Feeding Grounds, High Reaches Weyr

Wedged between the lake and the rest of the vast bowl are the dusty feeding grounds. Here, the well-trampled ground is contained by a sturdy wooden fence, cutting right through one end of the lake to section it off into a muddy watering hole for the animals. Several gates allow people in and out, while at the back, large overhangs of rock provide the herd -- a mixed bag of herdbeasts, wing-clipped wherries, and fat porcines -- shelter from storms or the hot sun. What grass survives is usually bloodstained, but feeding troughs are stationed around the edges of the pen.

It's another of those beautiful summer afternoons at the 'Reaches: warm, but not hot, clear skies, the whole bit. Perhaps it's no wonder, then, that though Cadejoth divebombs on the pens sans rider, K'del isn't that far behind, ambling across the bowl with his hands loosely hanging from his pockets, his shirt untucked. Cadejoth's arrival, of course, stirs the animals up intensely, but at least he's efficient, taking down his chosen creature with a modicum of fuss.

K'del and Cadejoth may just be arriving, but Sho is already there. The boy leans against the fence that seperates the rest of the bowl from the weyr beasts, whittling away at a small piece of wood with a small knife. He seems to be kind of lost in his own world until the dragon divebombs a beast, at which point his eyes refocus on what's in front of him and his hands stop moving. Hrm. "That's...Cadejoth." he says, the dragon being one of the few he thought he should memorize, since it's an important one.

Iskiveth appears soon after Cadejoth. It's almost like she's following the bronze or something, in fact. She circles until the bronze has made his kill, then descends on the herd herself to pick out a nice, plump creature for herself with an ear-grating screech of delight.

Cadejoth, for the record? Does not seem to mind being followed by Iskiveth. He even lifts his head from his kill, maw bloodied, to watch her take down hers, echoing her screech with an exuberant rumble of his own, almost like an oversized, rangy bronze cheerleader. His rider, getting closer now, clamps both hands to his ears, grimacing, but is otherwise undeterred. He obviously hasn't heard Sho's words, but does smile lazily at the boy as he reaches the fence, leaning against it to watch the carnage.

To Iskiveth, Cadejoth's enthusiasm echoes in the twanging jangle of his mental touch, as he reaches out to note, « Nice kill! » There's some pride there. His daughter! Go figure.

As another dragon appears Sho looks up and blinks, then hrms. This one isn't coming so easily. Not that there's many golds...he's just...well, still learning. The screeching causes Sho to wince and duck his head between his arms to block some of the sound. But then that's done and Sho looks back up and starts absently cutting at the bit of wood again. Well, that is until K'del arrives and he starts a bit, "Oh, uh...hello sir. Sorry, didn't mean ta be a bother." Hey, he may get in trouble a lot...but he knows the people to be good to.

Iskiveth carries her kill closer to Cadejoth but her wings still mantle protectively over the carcass as she settles in to bury her muzzle in its belly. There's nothing dainty or delicate about the way she eats. Rather, it's almost as though she's /trying/ to be messy. At least it sort of suits her color already.

Fire blazes under the surface of Iskiveth's hungry demeanor but she can always be proud of compliments. « Of /course/. » Okay, so modesty isn't one of her talents, but she does sound very pleased that he noticed. (Iskiveth to Cadejoth)

"Bother?" K'del sounds surprised, but just as rapidly, shakes his head. "It's no bother. If you really want to watch the blood and guts and gore, not going to stop you." His gaze tips from the stablehand towards the dragons, his nose wrinkling. "Cadejoth's always a bit messy, but Iskiveth... reckon she relishes the whole thing. Poor Teris, having to clean her afterwards." The bronze in question considers Iskiveth, and the way she protects her food, but doesn't seem too bothered: he lowers his attention back to /his/, cracking bones cheerfully enough as he works his way through it.

To Iskiveth, Cadejoth, at least, is only affectionately amused by her lack of modesty, but, well, he /did/ offer the compliment. « I'm not going to steal your food, » he tells her, a note of teasing threaded through the jangling chains. « I've got my own. And neither will /they/. » An image, there, of K'del and Sho.

Sho eyes K'del, then nods and moves back to lean on the fence next to the Weyrleader. "It's just interesting ta see how things work in life. I mean, I help with the herdbeasts, raise 'em and such...and then they end up here, being dragon food. Just kinda odd, ya know?" He half-asks, glancing sideways at K'del as his hands hang over the fence with the knife and wood lazily. "Like that one, fer instance." He points the knife at the one Iskiveth so delicately picked. "When I first got here it was just born. Kind of a weird chain of events." He doesn't seem saddened by it, more just intrigued.

Well of course she's protecting it. It's hers, after all. It doesn't really matter if anyone else wants it or not. Iskiveth just does that sort of thing. She does calm somewhat, though, when Cadejoth's attention returns more to his own meal.

Fire licks along Cadejoth's chains, like she's trying to coax them into motion. « Of course not. I wouldn't let you steal my food. And they are too small. I would eat-- well, at least the little one, if he tried. » So she says. (Iskiveth to Cadejoth)

After a moment, K'del swings over the fence so that he can perch atop it, his feet resting on the lower rail, one hand on the fencepost to keep him stable. "Huh," he says, in response to Sho, head shaking. "Guess I don't think of it like that. It's all just food. For us, for them, whatever." Cadejoth's meal doesn't take long to consume, and he leaves behind only a fairly sad collection of bones and hide, when he launches himself back into the air, rumbling encouragingly at Iskiveth, as if to encourage her to join him. When she's ready. In the meantime, he'll circle, idly terrifying the milling creatures.

Solemnly, « I am glad you would not eat my K'del. » It's not all serious, though, and the licking flames send sparks up and down his chains, a merry blaze of electricity and heat. « We should chase them. They taste better afraid. » (Cadejoth to Iskiveth)

Sho watches K'del hop over and sit on the fence before he himself climbs through the top and middle posts and wraps his arms around behind the top one with his knife and bit of wood still in hand. "Yeah, I know, ya know? I never really thought much about it either but it's interesting. We raise 'em to be food and that's it. But ta actually watch the whole process. You should try it some time." He says, smirking a little up at the weyrleader.

Now that Iskiveth has made a huge mess of her meal and consumed all that she's going to for now, she launches herself into the air and after Cadejoth with another screech, this one at least aimed skyward. At least until she gets enough height to drop back toward the pens, intention simply to set the beasts to running, it seems.

The electricity, his or some mimic of his, crackles and snaps through her fire and Iskiveth seems to like it. Mention of chasing the beasts calls to the gold's bloodlust all too well, « I /do/ like when they're afraid. » (Iskiveth to Cadejoth)

Snorting, K'del rolls his eyes in Sho's direction. "Like I've time for that kind of thing. Anyway: I'm a hold boy. Raised grapes rather than beasts, but didn't mean we didn't have, you know, chickens and whatever." His foot wiggles idly as he turns his attention back to the dragons. "Shells, these two. If anything is animal cruelty..." It's this. Cadejoth launches himself after Iskiveth, and more animals go running. "Overgrown children. Not what I expected, when I saw myself Impressing bronze."

Zinging, Cadejoth seems to get only more excited, ichor pumping, bones rattling and shaking. « I like the hunt, » he tells her. « I like-- /this/. The chase. The joy. » He /is/ joyful, too. « And it's better with someone. Part of your pack. » (Cadejoth to Iskiveth)

Sho's amber eyes follow the dragons as they go about torturing the beasts and he smirks a little more. "Yeah, it's kind'a interesting ta watch." He says, then a pause before he asks (while still looking at the dragons of course), "What's it like...if you don't mind my asking." He quickly adds, glancing sideways at K'del. "Impressing, I mean."

Iskiveth is so not an overgrown child. She's way better than some dumb kid. /Obviously./ Never mind the delighted bugle of triumph that echoes off of the bowl wall as she wings back up away from the pens. Probably just to circle back around for another go, though. Fortunately Teris is visibly making her way toward the feeding grounds now. When an Iskiveth is too quiet for too long and not unconscious, she's probably up to no good.

« We should go hunting outside together sometime! I want a wild feline skin for my weyr. And maybe one for Teris, too. » Iskiveth thinks big, at least, if anything good can be said of her. « Maybe one for you and yours, too. » Maybe. If they can manage. (Iskiveth to Cadejoth)

/That/ question. K'del hesitates, and then, he seems to get a blank, distant expression on his face. "It's--" He breaks off, shaking his head. "Impossible to describe, mostly." Apologetic. "Like you've just found your other half. Like they're perfect, and you don't know how you survived before." Beat. "Of course, they don't stay perfect in your head forever, unless you're really willing to delude yourself." Cadejoth may also be better than an overgrown child, but really: only just. This time, he actually picks up one of the poor animals between his talons, hoisting it around for a few seconds before he lets it go again. Ouch.

Delightedly, Cadejoth tells Iskiveth, « That would be FUN! I'd like one of those, and I bet K'del would, too. We should have trophies. Because we're awesome, right? And fun. » And other things. Like kind of dumb, maybe. (Cadejoth to Iskiveth)

"Huh..." is Sho's expansive response. His gaze leaves K'del and go back to the dragons, his hands flicking a bit as he falls silent and seems to consider K'del's words. The youth winces as he sees the herdbeast dropped and shakes his head, "That one was a bit stupid anyways." He mutters.

"A holder once told me that it's like getting married," says Teris as she approaches. "Of course, she'd never impressed and I can't imagine they're at all similar." Once she's more or less there, though, she doesn't seem to have much intention of giving either male her attention. Instead she leans against the fence and frowns at Iskiveth when she dives toward the dropped beast and bowls it over before taking off again.

/Trophies./ That word sparks up Iskiveth's heat and turns it on the bronze. « We should! I want trophies. We're very awesome. And definitely should have trophies. » Things that she can show off? Are perfect things. (Iskiveth to Cadejoth)

"Stupider now," is K'del's observation of the poor dropped beast. Teris' arrival shifts his attention from Sho and the dragons; he inclines his head forward by way of greeting. "Reckon she was talking crap, if so. Can't-- well. Marriage is just ceremony, right? And this is-- different. More. Much more." And then, "Sorry of Cadejoth is riling Iskiveth up. He's bored; been bored all day, really, and I just don't have time to take him anywhere interesting." Bored enough, apparently, that Cadejoth is trying to tip animals over, now, gleefully. Poor beasts.

To Iskiveth, Cadejoth is smug. /Trophies/. Exactly. He thought she'd like that. He burns with her flames, bright and white-hot. « /Definitely/. I want to do this. » And, more sadly. « K'del says we can't. Not today, anyway. » Sadface.

The voice from behind causes Sho to try and slip out of the fence and ungracefully lands on his face inside the feeding area. Grumble. Sho pushes himself up and slips his knife into it's sheath and the piece of wood into a pouch he's currently wearing. He turns back to Teris and nods in greeting. He has yet to actually meet her. Thus as it stands he says nothing, but instead listens to the two try and answer his question.

"Shouldn't you be paying more attention to your lifemate, K'del. What if he wandered off and started messing with some poor holder's beasts, hmm?" Teris probably doubts this would actually happen but it's fun to talk down to the Weyrleader anyway. Sho landing on his face doesn't get much in the way of reaction from the Junior, more focused on her lifemate who follows along in Cadejoth's footsteps like it's the cool thing to do. "So long as you're not going to get upset with me for your dragon starting it."

To Cadejoth, Iskiveth might not like it so much if she knew that he knew that she'd like it. But she doesn't. Or she's ignoring the fact. « Why? It's not like he's /doing/ anything. We should go without them. »

Surprised, K'del exclaims, "Shells!" as Sho goes careening forward like that. "You okay?" Even if he is picking himself back up. To Teris, his upper body swinging around to meet her, he points out, "I'm out here, aren't I? Watching him eat." And play, admittedly. "If they get out of hand, I'll stop 'em." After a beat, he adds, "Not going to. Cadejoth knows better than to do anything too stupid, anyway." Iskiveth? Well. He says nothing about her.

To Iskiveth, Cadejoth makes no more of it, at least. Anyway, he's too delighted with all these games and fun and /ideas/. « K'del says no, » he reports back. « And I guess he's right. We have to show a good example. But maybe, he says, another day. We could all go. And then our riders could have a picnic or something. » Trust K'del.

Sho looks back and forth between the two riders as they chit chat about their dragons. Hrm. He waits for a break in their talking before he interjects, "Hi, I'm Sho." directed of course at Teris. Hey, he's not going to /wait/ to introduce himself to a girl. He's a teenager.

Teris rolls her eyes at K'del. Yeah, yeah. Whatever. She doesn't say anything else scolding to him, at least, and soon enough her gaze is fixing on Sho like she's just realized that he's here even though she clearly saw him on her approach. "Teris. Junior Weyrwoman to Iskiveth," she offers with a gestured nod toward the gold out there making a nuisance of herself to the poor beasts. "I just wanted to come and make sure she wasn't doing anything... destructive," she explains to the both of them.

To Cadejoth, Iskiveth can probably deal with that, maybe. « I suppose that will be okay. Just don't go without me! » Because that would make her especially difficult to deal with at least until she forgot about it.

With some, obvious reluctance, Cadejoth selects himself a second beast from the rampaging mob, and settles down to eat it: the others can have some respite, at least from /him/. "She's fine," K'del promises his junior, his expression even and unconcerned, regardless of any expressions she may have aimed at him. "Though I appreciate your concern." Beat. "Sho's one of our stablehands," he adds, after a moment, tipping his head at the boy.

Cross his heart, hope to die! « I promise, » swears Cadejoth, firmly. « We'll make a date for it. We'll get trophies and have fun, and be /outside/ the weyr! » Which, sadly, seems to be something of a special treat for the poor bronze. (Cadejoth to Iskiveth)

Sho nods his agreement to K'del's words, smiling at Teris, blinking his amber eyes at her quite cutely and sweetly. Aww, isn't he such a good kid? "Yeah, I work at the stables. I help raise the beasts yer dragons get to eat." He says, pointing a thumb behind him at the herdbeasts. He's still within the fence for the feeding grounds but he doesn't seem to worried at this point. After all, he'd hear if anything was coming. "Yer dragon seems to be doing fine ma'am."

"Right then." Teris casts her gaze back out toward Iskiveth, who doesn't pick out another beast and instead rumbles a disgruntled sound up there in the air before tilting herself toward the lake. All that now dried blood? Needs to get washed off. "Pleasure meeting you, Sho, I'm sure. And Iskiveth certainly appreciates the help you've given in raising her meals. If you'll excuse me, though..." It stays open ended and she doesn't wait for any acknowledgement from either of them before she's turning away to follow her lifemate toward the lake.

Cadejoth's head drops, as though he's /utterly/ disappointed to have lost his playmate. Perhaps he is. Not that it stops him from continuing to chomp on his food of course. "See you later," K'del calls after Teris; then, he turns his attention back towards Sho. "You're lucky you caught her in a good mood. She and the Weyrwoman are... a good match for each other."

Sho watches Teris as she leaves, nodding a farewell to her, and then waits until she's gone before he says, "She's a nice one." How he means it and whether he's being sarcastic or not can be very much left to interpretation. K'dels own words just to prove what Sho was thinking and he smirks a bit as he shakes his head. "So, yer the only nice dragon rider in the Weyr, right?"

"Hardly," laughs K'del, though it does seem to give him momentary pause. "I think we just have some-- interesting characters around. That's all." But he seems somewhat pleased, all the same. Twisting his gaze back towards Sho, he adds, "You got plans for life? Or just intending to keep working in the stables forever?"

Ahh, now there's a question. And one that leaves Sho silent for a few moments as he turns back around to face the feeding grounds, leaning against the fence silently. Finally he says, "I dunno. I'm stuck here until I Turn 16. After that...well, I haven't really thought about it. I don't wanna be a stable hand forever, but it's kinda late to pick a craft. Maybe I'll just be a trader or something, see the world, ya know?" His arms cross over his chest as he keeps thinking on it...but at least there was an idea...if not the best one.

Nose wrinkling, "Dunno if it's really too late to join a craft. If you wanted to. Bet they'd take you, still, if you were determined." K'del seems relatively firm on this, but not pushy. He considers Cadejoth for a few moments more, then adds, "Not that I can talk. I was your age when I came here, wanting to do /something/, /anything/, as long as it wasn't something one of my brothers had done. Liked seeing a bit of the world, too, I admit."

Sho nods in agreement with the Weyrleader, "That's kinda how I feel. I want ta do something more. I just don't know what it is yet. And I'm stuck here with my uncle for another 7 months so nothing's gonna happen until then at least." He sighs softly, finally turning his head to look at K'del. "Ya think they'd still take me in a craft? Most'a the time they go in a lot younger'n me."

K'del's expression is thoughtful, though he bobs his head a couple of times. "Reckon that's true of a lot of people your age, believe it or not. It's just-- working out what you want. Where you fit. Reckon, though, if you wanted to join a craft, and promised to be diligent, your uncle wouldn't object. Anyway, could easily be posted here, for that matter, if you needed to be. Could be worth a try, maybe?"

Sho grins at K'del, "Yeah, I guess yer right. But..." Beat. "I don't know where I'd want to apprentice just yet." Beat. "What'd you do before you became a rider?" He asks, finally turning to lean on the fence opposite but next to K'del, watching the weyrleader easily. Sho seems surprisingly relaxed around the man considering the trouble he causes. Maybe because it's someone he can actually get along with kind of. "Did you find what ya wanted to do?"

"Give it some thought, maybe," K'del suggests, with a shrug. "See if something starts appealing. You've a little time, yet, I guess." He tilts his head back in Sho's direction, considering the younger man, then grins. "Handyman, for a couple of months. Then I got Searched and the rest... history, I guess, you know? So I guess being a rider /is/ what I wanted to do. Just the idea never occurred to me until I was Searched. Dunno what I would've done, longer term, if I hadn't been."

The boy nods to K'del, "Yeah, I guess that's the best thing. I'll just...think about it for a while." He says, then raises an eyebrow at the weyrleader, "So ya went from a handy man ta being the Weyrleader? That's kind of a jump I s'pose." He says with a grin. He climbs back through the fencing then before he adds, "Well, I'll definitely think about it. Thanks for the advice...uh...sir." Yeah, best to be formal and all that.

K'del thinks for a moment, and then laughs. "Sure did. In the space of two turns, at that. Which is... mildly disconcerting, when you think about it, huh?" He tips his head towards Sho cheerfully, adding, "Good luck with it all, Sho. See you 'round."

Sho offers a wave to the weyrleader before he jogs off down the bowl back in the direction of the stables. Back to work for him, with much to think about. And of course there's always that fantasy about becoming a rider, but...that's not something he really plans on. He'll find something he enjoys. Maybe become a breeder or some such. Hrm...
