He struck out with Alendi. Not only had she not remembered him, or any of his attempts to impress her, she actually called him 'pock-mark' to his face, in front of all of her friends. Who laughed. Hard. It was most embarrassing.

It wasn't that Kas was full of himself, as such, but he'd never had that kind of problem with a girl before; it made him a little wary of weyr girls in general, and since he probably had no chance with anyone Alendi knew anymore, he knew he was going to have to take his attempts further afield.

It was a couple of sevendays after his arrival at the Weyr that he managed to swing past the infirmary, and check out this Madilla girl Oysric had mentioned. It was pretty easy to figure out which one she was: the other healers were all older than he was, but she... he was pretty sure she was probably about his age, even. And she wasn't pretty, as such, but she smiled a lot, and - definitely his type.

She was standing at the counter, chatting animatedly with a child of maybe nine or ten, a girl with a finger wrapped up in a bandage. Kas strode up behind her, leaning forward onto the counter to smile - winningly, he hoped - at both of them. "Why hello there, ladies," he beamed.

Madilla frowned at him, and so, too, did the little girl, the conversation grinding to a halt with his arrival. "Can I help you at all?" the healer wanted to know, blinking up at him.

"Just wanted to introduce myself. Name's Kasadel. Kas. Newly arrived at the weyr, and trying to make some friends."

Madilla offered her hand to shake - her grip wasn't very firm, but the skin was quite soft, probably something to do with all the herb-y things she must touch all the time. Small, in his big hand. Slender. "I'm Madilla, Apprentice Healer. And this is Elda. Welcome to the 'reaches."

"I hurt my finger," said Elda, holding out her hand expectantly.

"Nice to meet you, Madilla," Kas told her, earnestly, pleased that he'd picked her out correctly. "Your finger? Did Madilla kiss it better for you?"

"She did! And she gave me a sweet, because she said I was really brave," beamed the child up at him, her hand still held out.

"I bet she has healing kisses, too," said Kasadel, leaning down to inspect the finger, having to crouch just to get close.

Elda nodded with enthusiasm, drawing the hand away again. "She does. She made it all better!"

Kas could see, even from this vantage point, that Madilla was flushing. He'd have to walk carefully, then, if she were that easily embarrassed. He'd intended to say something along the lines of 'wish I could have one of those', but thought better of it. "I'm very glad to hear that, Elda. That's what healers should do, after all."

He straightened, able to see Madilla better from his full height, and smiled down at her. She blinked at him owlishly, as if still deciding what to make of him. Better, he decided, than outright dismissal.

"Are... are you sure there's nothing I could help you with, Kasadel? Most people don't just visit the infirmary for no reason."

He winked down at Elda, he peered up at him curiously, then turned his attention back to Madilla. "Well... You could come and have a drink with me, one night? Help me get to know the place, the people, a bit better?"

"I'm--" Madilla hesitated, still frowning at him. "I'm pretty new myself. I've only been posted here a few months."

"All the better!" he enthused, beaming at her. "We can get to know each other, and both be a little less lonely. Please say yes. It would be nice to know someone else my own age."

"I'm not much of a drinker."

"Not a problem. We could just-- stargaze. Talk."

"Stargaze?"

"Yes! Look at the stars one night. I'm told they're beautiful around here, very clear."

She was frowning more deeply again, and said, at length, "You sound like Oysric. He stargazes, too."

Kas shrugged. "It's a fine thing to do. Bit chilly, but I bet we can manage. What do you say? Please? Elda thinks you should - don't you, Elda?"

Elda said nothing, peering up at both of them with some confusion.

"Elda, you're not helping," he stage whispered, and she giggled.

Madilla flushed pink. It was cute. He liked it on her. "I don't know. Maybe. At some point."

"I'll take that as a yes," he told her, beaming. "I'm going to hold you to it, too."

He hummed to himself as he worked that afternoon, and felt a spring in his step. It wasn't a yes, he knew that, but it was a something. He was going to like living here, he could see that much already.
