Prologue

What's a Lord (even a wannabe Lord) without his servants? Henret had an aide-de-camp, Zaccharat, who knew he'd be implicated (rightfully) in his master's plans. Knowing he had to be exiled, he took along his own wife for comfort, hid his son away, and (despite his wife Beignette's pleading) took along their two daughters under the pretext of keeping family together. After all, in a place where marks aren't good any longer, a man's got to have currency.

Background

If asked, Zebadiah would say he's a lucky man: he's married to the woman he loves, and thanks to his wife's family, he has a good occupation too. (That is, beyond impregnating his wife and making sure that her family line continues.) The woman: Diera, sweet but sickly, sole heir to her family in the direct line. The job: killing dolphins. Yes, Flipper. D: D: Diera's family lives a couple islands over, since dolphins avoid the main island. On behalf of the exiles at large, they reverently and ritualistically hunt dolphins as an important connection to the sea... and, okay, an important source of meat. A combination of the Comet Pass plus tragic accidents at sea weakened Diera's family (an offshoot of one of the active rebels), so they adopted strapping young Zeb at an early age to marry Diera and improve their line. Unlike some other arranged marriages, the pair fell in love. However, now they're off to the main island for better medical care for Diera.
