Living Cavern, High Reaches Weyr

Stalactites hang high above this enormous cavern like a jagged chandelier or an inversion of the Spires themselves, but shadows cling to them instead of light. Below lie great tables arranged in rows, each large enough to serve a fighting wing, while in the nooks and alcoves around the cavern's edge sit more sensibly-sized tables, from six- and eight-seaters down to intimate spots for just a couple of diners. The only really open space is around the kitchen entrance, smelling of food and rarely quiet, and by the nearby serving tables with their long buffet of the day's offerings.

Tapestries on the smooth walls -- some faded and others newly woven -- only slightly mute the sea of sound when a meal is in full swing, but they add cheerfulness augmented by the glowlight from wall sconces and the centerpieces of each table. Still, shadows always creep along the ceiling and into the mouths of the exits -- the myriad small hallways at one end of the cavern and, at the other, the twisting tunnel to the bowl near an array of coathooks and and hatracks -- and late at night, when the glows are allowed to dim, the chamber can seem very dark indeed.

It's not long after the start of month twelve that there are a pair of new faces becoming familiar to the living cavern. But they're not new to everyone. Some of Savannah or others that have spent time in Monaco might recognize X'vae and Z'riah from 'back home.' Today, X'vae is lacking his compatriot's company, but he's placed a reasonable amount of the lunch offerings onto a plate and is in search of a seat. His light tan and cream riding leathers are the Monocoan style that is not so different from 'Reaches, if in this case a tad more light-weight, but the knot declares him a High Reaches bluerider, though there's not yet a badge denoting a wing.

It's chance, or perhaps not chance at all that has Edyis actually eating lunch in the caverns today instead of elsewhere. Her own plate filled with only her favorites. Wine and meat rolls and possibly some vegetables thrown in for balance. What is certainly not a coincidence is the fact that she's setting her tray down next to the bluerider's in the seat opposite him. "Imagine spotting you here." Comes smoothly, "I thought M'kris liked you well enough to keep you off the evictees list." It isn't exactly an accusation, no, it is a question really, even though it's not entirely phrased as such. From the dark eyes that focus sharply, while she stabs innocent carrots with a fork before sending them to their final destination.

Edyis is in luck. X'vae not only did find a seat, but it's one where there is a seat across from him available. He's only just settled when her tray arrives on the table. His greener-today eyes lift up off the tray to see the speaker, brows lifting just a touch. Though she might recognize him, there's no sign in his expression that the reverse is true. He blinks, his fork arresting and drooping down to the edge of his own plate. "I wasn't thrown out." His baritone is colored with puzzlement, his eyes still on her, possibly trying to place her face. A possibility made more probable when he says, "Sorry, do I know you?"

"No you don't." She replies easily of being known, as though that were all the explanation needed. One of the meatrolls is bitten into and consumed before she deigns to speak again. "But I know you, or at least I've seen you plenty of times around Monaco's records room and living caverns, X'vae right?" Not that she ever carried on a conversation with the man, more along the lines of someone who associates a name with a face and a warning to be cautious. "So if you weren't one of the evictees - what brings you to our happy little corner of the frozen north."

"Then you have me at a disadvantage," the bluerider observes, an easy smile overriding any sense he might have that he's being either accused or provoked. "Can't see how I could've missed such a pretty face," the charming smile is very authentic as he offers over his hand. "X'vae," he confirms. "Izazeth's rider." Then with a flick of his fingers on the hand that either has abandoned the attempt at a hand clasp or has successfully done so and finished, that tugs on the knot on his jacket shoulder, "I moved," is provided as the answer to what brings him here.

Edyis laughs easily, "Yes well I would hate to give up the advantage as I'm a notorious cheat, however," Extending her hand to shake his in a far less tense manner she offers "Edyis of the Reaches Records Room." She nods, "I noticed, I figured it was part of the house cleaning but I suppose there are other reasons to vacate Monaco." Lifting her wine to her lips.

"Aren't there always reasons to leave a place? Were you back and forth between 'Reaches and Monaco then?" That she saw him so often. X'vae tilts his head a little, making the inquiry and then shifts his fork to finally obtain a little food, even if it doesn't yet lift it to his mouth.

After her mouth is empty she shrugs, "I moved to Monaco, and then found the change in climate suddenly unappealing." Stabbing those vegetables again she is, efficient if nothing else. That or she has a serious grudge against carrots. "How do you like Reaches so far? You might want to trade in for some warmer leathers when you get the chance, winter gets brutal."

"When Feyzeth caught Evielth?" X'vae inquires of the timing of the sudden change of heart, not that one mightn't assume as much from her previous words. "I like it." He doesn't have to think much about that. "Colder, of course, but I've always liked the idea of snow," though an idea and a reality can differ. "I remember it fondly from my time at Healer. Snow and ice skating." He grins. The way it creases the fine lines around his jaw and next to his eyes is a giveaway that this expression is no stranger to his face. As for the leathers, he reaches to flip the jacket open. Unlike those Edyis would've seen in Monaco, the lining of these have been stitched with at least one layer of fur. "Waste no," he intones cheerfully. "So you work in the records." It's thoughtful, but not a question as she's already said. "How do you like that? Are the ones here much different than the ones kept at Monaco?" Maybe he's trying to lead the conversation away from touchier topics, or maybe he's genuinely interested. It certainly seems the latter, tucking into his own meal while he waits on an answer.

"No after that, when people started transferring." She explains thoughtful, smiling at mention of snow. "I don't think I've ever tried ice skating. Even growing up in the north." She grins at the fur stitched into leather, "Rather a practical sort of person aren't you. You should get along well here." She shrugs of the records room. "It can be passionate work, but sadly it loses it's appeal the longer you spend doing it. You seem to have adjusted, what about you lifemate? How is he enjoying the weather and the change in company?"

There's a nod for the first, but X'vae doesn't pursue the topic. "Really? It's all anyone can tell me is good about the winters here. I'm looking forward to the lake freezing over," it shouldn't be long now before the ice is ready to be tested by some bold soul or another. "We ought to go. Make a time of it. Do they know how to have a good time in 'Reaches? Remember the bonfires at Monaco?" His tone holds fondness for the informal parties on the beaches there. "And are you losing your passion for it?" He asks, the cant of his head showing polite interest, if not a prying desire to know. "Izazeth's having an easier time than Yizibeth, I'm sad to say. She misses home. He-- understands that we're 'Reaches riders now. And he likes new experiences, so that helps. Endless curiosity, that one." More fondness, this of a more tender ilk that X'vae seems to have no qualms about showing.

"I avoided the bonfires." She states simply, "They do know how to have a good time, but you do need to make friends in the right company." Of waning passion she only shrugs. "It will help that a dragon's memory is never truly consistent. I would imagine." Finishing the last of her food on the plate, and draining her wine. "It was good seeing you again."

X'vae's brow wrinkles as his eyebrows dip at the first words. "I wasn't aware the bonfires were limited only those you might find repugnant. You must be a woman of extremely discerning taste," the bluerider observes this with ease, his brow flattening out again. "I suspect. If Z'riah doesn't pine for the warmth, Yizibeth might have an easier time of it." He can hope, anyway. The last is met with, "It was good meeting you." Even if he doesn't sound entirely certain that that is the case.

"Repugnant company could not keep me from doing a thing if I so desired it. Contrariwise it could not force me to do a thing I didn't care for. I simply don't like bonfires." She shrugs, "Plenty of cuddly dragons about to fight the cold I'm sure. I am sure we will cross paths again sometime soon, but I unfortunately have work to get to." Unceremoniously rising from her seat with a smile. Departing unless he has any cause to halt her.
