Resident Common Room, High Reaches Weyr(#378RJs)

Just off of the main passageway lies the small cavern that forms the hub of the residents' quarters, kept immaculately clean by the headwoman's staff and warmed in cold weather by a stone hearth to the left and well back from the entrance. Comfortable chairs and a plush fur arrayed before the hearth make an inviting spot to curl up with a book or handicraft, or just to sit and chat. Beyond, additional chairs stand in clusters throughout the room, some upholstered with age-softened hide, some plain wood. At the widest point of the cavern, a round table gleams with polish, though its surface is nicked and scarred from Turns of use. Beyond the table, the very back of the cavern often lies in shadow unless the glowbaskets there are unlidded to cast cozy pools of light. The commingled scents of klah, smoke and polish permeate the air along with the sweetness of rosemary and lavender. It's a typical quiet evening in the commons room, a pair of old aunties knit by the fire while others are strewn about the common room with various bits of evening work. Edyis herself Is one of those, book in hand, pencil in the other making tiny annotations on the sheet beside her as she goes, glancing up every so often to keep an eye on the comings and goings of the room.

Coming, not going, is Milani, from the headwoman's office in fact, the door closed behind her and Giorda's assistant leans there for a moment, clipboard held against her chest. Long day? Probably. She pushes away from the door after a moment, crossing the room which brings her past where Edyis sits. Absently, she shifts her clipboard beneath her arm and her own pencil clatters to the floor, only loosely tucked into the clip. "Oh shells, sorry," she offers apologetically for the noise as she bends to retrieve the writing implement.

Expressive bright blue-green eyes are the remarkable feature of this woman's face, the color rather intense, like the seas off Ista Island. These days, they're framed with the faint signs of early laugh lines, a tell-tale sign of age past thirty. A small, slightly upturned nose scattered with freckles across the bridge and full lips complete a winsome face that's most often open and frank of expression. It'd be hard to miss her in a crowd too, given her height, just a smidgen under six feet and the bright head of wavy, strawberry-blonde hair. Her long lean build is softened by a hint of plumpness enhancing a moderately curvy figure.

Smiling warmly Edyis laughs, "No need to apologize to me, Giorda have you running circles or something?" Setting aside her notes in favor of studying the blonde, moving to help retrieve the implement.

"Lots going on in stores," Milani confirms with a little grin and pauses mid-bend as Edyis also moves toward the pencil. "Whoops, don't want to bump heads," she adds laughingly.

"Tithes coming in already?" the girl asks, laughing as she fetches the implement and hands it to the headwoman's assistant. "I don't think I've met you before, I'm Edyis, Assistant records keeper."

"Mmm. It's always a busy time of the turn, taking stock of what's coming in, finding space for it, discovering that things that you thought were in one place aren't and why did they get moved?" Milani accepts the returned pencil and sticks it into the coil of hair at the back of her head instead of through the clip on the board. She offers her hand to Edyis as she introduces herself in turn. "Milani. Used to do that job for a while before rejoining the headwoman's corps," she states humorously. "I've seen you around." Friendly.

"You're a brave soul, Giorda scares me, ever since I first came here." She laughs, "It's good to make your official acquaintance then." She's silent a moment, thoughtful. "Slim pickings again you think? Or a good supply of goods?"

"Really? I can't be scared of her, since we used to both be assistants under Hayda and then she was /my/ assistant. I guess I've just known her for too long," Milani remarks thoughtfully. That last question earns a grimace and the lift of one shoulder. "Hard to say just yet, we'll have a better idea by the end of next month."

The young scribe blinks at that in awe. "Giorda was your assistant?" The grimace is noted and the Edyis's nose wrinkles. "Nabol's crops at least should be steadily improving, though I can't say anything of the other holds. It's the waiting part that always seems to get to me. Waiting for others to act." She shrugs. "I'm sure it will be fine."

"Mm. I was headwoman for a while. I had to give it up when I had to spend some time in a warmer climate for health reasons." Milani offers this matter-of-factly. Of tithes: "Ye-es. The waiting is definitely the worst part. I get a little tense every turn, waiting and seeing. We always seem to figure something out though, even in the leaner turns."

"Happy to hear you recovered enough to return to High Reaches, don't you usually miss the warmer weather though?" Edyis asks, collecting her book and notes again.

"It was over a decade ago now, but yes, it was good to come home. I'm Reaches born and raised, so no, I don't miss the weather too much. I like the changes of seasons. But I still visit family down there regularly when I get a hankering for some beach time." She offers Edyis a smile: "You're a warm weather fan?"

Grinning Edyis nods. "Warm sand, and the ocean nearby, I never miss an opportunity to go. Then again, Reaches always manages to feel like home somehow, so I like them both I think. So you grew up here in the Weyr? What was that like?" She asks, intently curious now.

"The beach is definitely fun. It was always nice to visit Ista when my brother rode there." Milani nods, confirming her origins. "My parents are both riders, though they rarely fly anything but watch duty these days." Edyis' curiosity earns a faintly bemused look: "Happily chaotic?" she starts with and laughs. "I don't have much experience with other ways of growing up. Hardly any exposure to holds and only a little to crafts." More thoughtfully: "Like most weyrbred kids, I spent about half my time in the lower caverns with nannies and half with my parents. My mother and father liked to keep the family together as much as possible so we spent more time as a family than some weyrbred do."

"Happily chaotic?" She echoes with a huge dimpled smile. "So you never missed your parents when they weren't there? I only ever knew life in a Hold before coming here, so the caverns and the nannies still seem a little strange to me."

"Well there wasn't much 'not there' time," Milani explains. "More that some days I was down here and sometimes if they were both out of the weyr overnight, or busy, I'd spend the night down in the caverns, but no, I didn't miss them much because they weren't gone much. There's some though that barely spend any time with their parents at all, but then, riders who don't want to raise their kids themselves usually find a fosterer." The assistant headwoman is still matter-of-fact. "Best of both worlds?"

She smiles, "That makes me feel a lot better I think. It was always one of those things I never fully understood about people who are bonded with dragons not being able to raise their own children, but I imagine there's just as many stories about holders having strange customs too."

"It's a balancing act, just like almost anything," Milani replies. "Any time you have work you have to do outside of the home, you have to find a way to balance that with taking care of your children. I have two, a daughter and a son, they're ... nearly grown now, but when they were little, they had to go with the nannies while I was on duty, especially since their fathers are both bronzeriders." Edyis' last earns a laugh. "Exactly. Holder weddings and betrothals, especially betrothals of young people under a certain age tend to confuse Weyrfolk."

"Fathers?" The word hangs for a moment as she tilts her head, "That's the other thing I'm not sure I understand. Don't people get jealous or angry over things like flights or - maybe that's another of those strange holder traditions belonging only to one person." Nose wrinkling in distaste, she snorts. "Trust me the ones being betrothed often don't understand it any better, we just pretend to put up with it for the good of the hold."

"Of course they do, sometimes, people are people," Milani continues matter-of-fact, "but you can't let it get in the way in a Weyr. You have to deal with it without making a fuss. For the most part." She nods though. "Mm, riders belong to their dragons, first and foremost, that's what can take a lot of getting used to." That nose wrinkle is duly noted. "Exactly - we all do what we have to in the end, for the good of the weyr or the hold or the craft, right? It's just that what you put up with is different in each of those."

"Guess no matter where you live things get complicated." She sighs. "I'm probably keeping you from your work though, thank you for answering my questions. Hopefully I'll get to see you around again?"

"There's a lot of truth to that," Milani agrees, expression a little absent for a moment, perhaps memories coming back. She re-focuses though and shakes her head. "I'm heading off-duty to find something to eat and speaking of family, catch up with my son for a little while." She offers Edyis a warm smile: "Oh I'm sure we'll bump into each other. After all, there's all the results of these tithes to file in records!" she offers a final grin and a nod. "Good evening, Edyis."
