There are reasons that Damaris typically works the late dinner shift and then overnight in the kitchen. The primary one would be that she gets to avoid mornings completely. It's not particularly early. It's not an hour where much of anyone is still sleepy. And yet. Eventually, the young woman is shoo'd out. Go. Get out. Dropping things tends to cause that. So does biting peoples' heads off. Whichever what way, the young woman has slunk out into the late morning sunshine, mug of something in her hand as she pads down towards the bowl floor. Squinting. It's pretty bright out here. What _is_ that thing in the _sky_, her expression clearly says. Even without an immediate audience, she's playing her expressions up. Drink from mug, exhaled sigh of relief. Please ignore the flicker of a smug smile that makes a Very Brief appearance. Eyes close, and she tilts her head up to the sky. Continues walking, of course. Because she's brilliant like that.

It is a pleasant late morning at Reaches, even with that intense bright ball in the sky, pouring down all of its warmth into bowl without a filter. Most people who aren't busy working, or being kicked out of work, would probably take this time to enjoy it, but E'gin isn't. The brownrider is finishing up a long run, up from the lake shore he's too tired to really be paying attention, that is until he finds a girl with her eyes closed wandering blindly across his path, "Hey!" He calls out in warning as he pulls up just short of her, hand extended to pad a crash that may, or may not, occur.

Maybe someday she will learn. This is not that day. This is so very much not that day. Damaris does the terribly intelligent thing, when she hears the cry of warning. She stops abruptly in his path, turning to - ouch! Be run into, apparently. Her mug goes to the ground (with only some spillage on her), and she goes stumbling back as she blinks at him with wide, wide eyes. Startled. Maybe a little bit ouch, though that doesn't seem to be her initial reaction. She is at least wise enough to not try and brace herself against him, just letting momentum take her back and trying to stay on her feet.

E'gin at least had some warning and with his bracing arm attempts to help her stay up as he tries to keep is balance. Alll weight on his left foot eventually he is able to get his right one back down and once the whole episode is over he grins, placing both hands on his knees and attempting to catch his breath while at the same time tring to stifle laughter. "You," gasping breath, "Okay?" A hand wipes away drops of sweat as it drips down his face, "Nothing like a little adrenline to end a run, eh?" A bit more startled blinking, and then Damaris isn't bothering to stifle her laugh, looking sheepish. She even has the grace to redden a little as she steps back and looks down towards her skirt, brushing a hand against where she spilled. Then her eyes go back up to him, smile staying on her lips. "I'm sorry," she says. "I. Don't have a good excuse. Yes, I'm fine. You're alright?" More bright, definitely amused laughter. "I don't even have a bad excuse."

"Me either." E'gin admits to the lack of excuse, "You'd think I'd pay more attention in the bowl, I mean I know how busy it is." His way of taking the blame for the near accident. "I hope I didn't ruin your walk, or get any sweat on you." The rider stops to examine the face of the small female he almost turned into bowl-kill, "I'm E'gin, by the way - I don't think we've met, have we?"

"Oh no, sweat," Damaris gives him a wide-eyed horrified sort of look, the expression all over the top and put on. She flashes a grin, blush fading as she recovers her mental balance swiftly on the heels of her physical. "You really didn't, it's fine. It gives me a good story to make people laugh with, later. The perils of walking around with your eyes closed." A half-step back towards him is taken now, and she is offering a hand out for him to shake. "E'gin? I'm Damaris," she says. "And no, I don't believe we have. I've seen you in passing though, I think. I work in the kitchen." Beat. "We've definitely met now."

"I tried flying with my eyes closed once," E'gin admits, "Not nearly as dangerous I bet, since Vysravth could see." An easy natural grin spreads across his face as the girl relaxes, "Oh thank goodness," He says taking the hand and shaking it, "I would have been really embarrassed if we had, "Almost kill you, and don't remember meeting you, I wouldn't have been able to go into the caverns to eat for sevendays." He wipes his forehead one more time, this time for dramatic effect, "Yah, not only have we met, but we have a story." His grin widens, "You from here?"

More laughter, and Damaris is shaking her head at him, offering up an impish smile. "I should have said yes," she laments. "The look on your face would have been priceless." Oh, lost opportunities to harass. It's so tragic. Her handshake is reasonably firm, for such a little thing. Still, that's entirely relative. "We do have a story. And I'm. From the area? I wasn't born in the Weyr, no. I've been here for...ages now. Couple of years." Which is forever and ever and ever, when you're her age. "You?" "Oh, I would have died. Then you would have had two stories, and I would have been dead." E'gin chuckles with a shaked of his head, "Next time someone asks you that you'll have to do it, and I hope I'm there to see it." The rider nods solemnly, "It does seem like forever, doesn't it, I think I've been here almost three, I was sixteen then." He shakes his head, "I'm and old man now." Laughter comes from something said privately, "I apologize, I have been told I can't call myself old because that would make /him/ old too." A pause, "May I ask what brought you here? Do you like it?"

"I think - yes, I will," Damaris decides, lips curving up into a sly smile. "Act all hurt and everything, to go with it." She laughs, shaking off the thoughtful look and refocusing up on him with a slight tilt of her head. Studying him with attentiveness. Curiosity. His apology draws out more laughter, and she rolls her eyes. "You definitely don't qualify as /old/," she says. "That's not till like, thirty." With the question of her, she nods agreeably enough. "You may." One, two, three moments of a pause, and then she's flashing a grin and actually answering. "My father. He's a Harper, was stationed for a while. When he came, I came with him, when he left, I stayed. Because yes, I like it here. I've been in the kitchens most of the time. Though I don't know how much longer that's going to last. I may have gotten chased out this morning." She puts on her most innocent look, to follow those words.

"Well, I'm in on it now, so I can play along. Make up a whole story about how I was there when you and whoever met." A mischievous grin, "I guess, I think by 26 it's time to just call it quits." He laughs with her, "Oh man. You've gotten into all sorts of trouble already this morning. You are being quite productive." He waggles his eyebrows, "Why did they kick you out? Spit on someone's food?"

"I'm always in trouble," Damaris laments, rolling her eyes and then offering up a mischievous little smile of her own. "I sort of burned some things and dropped some things and /maybe/ threatened to set someone on fire." Blink. Blink. Her expression is all innocence to follow those words. If there were a halo handy, she'd be polishing it. Look how innocent she is. Her throat is cleared. "I think you're right, about the age."

"Threatened to set someone on fire?" E'gin laughs, "You're alright." Is his final assessment of the girl, as if it matters, "Wouldn't that make for an awkward dinner menu?" His arms fold across his chest as he nods, "So, if they do kick you out of the kitchen for good what will you do?" There is a nod, followed by a grin, "Of course I'm right, I'm older than you therefore I'm wiser and more strikingly good looking, that's how the saying goes doesn't it? At least until I hit 26 then I'll be a creepier old guy who winks at younger riders, but it'll be okay, cause I'll be old. And you can do whatever you want when your old."

"Did you just call yourself prettier than me?" Damaris gives him a skeptical look, eyebrows lifting. "Really?" But there's definitely a tease in her tone, and she's laughing a beat later. "I don't know if it quite works that way, but - it will, by the time I'm there. I already do whatever I want, age will just make it that much easier for me." Sagenod. "And if they kick me out of the kitchen, I'll just go work in the nursery for a while." Total. Straight. Face.

"Well pretty isn't really a word I would use to describe myself, or any male really, but..." He too trails off into laughter, "No it really does. When you're old nobody cares. Think about it. Some male rider grabs a greenrider's butt, at 30 you'd be punished, at 70 people just say they're a cute old man." E'gin's time for a serious nod, "I can't wait to be old. Then if you'd threaten to set someone on fire, they'd just giggle and give you a cookie, no kick you out." A slow blink, "The nursery? They'd eat you alive." His tone and laughter indicate he's teasing.

He gets a briefly startled look at the comment about the cookie, and then Damaris is absolutely dissolving into laughter. She is so cracking up, to the point where she's gasping a little for air. This round? Yes, he's so won it. She leans forward a little, bringing her hands up to cover her face and just laughing and laughing. "I don't want to be old," she says. Once she can finally speak again. "But at least...there are perks." Laugh laugh. Of course, the comment about the nursery, she manages to quip after, "No, they'd set me on fire and eat me dead."

"I'm sure it won't be so bad." E'gin comments about getting old, "And yah, there are definetly perks." With a chuckle he nods, "My mistake, they would set you on fire. Seems to be a theme. Of course it would be better to be eaten after dead, I mean not many of them have teeth, you'd just be sitting there while they gummed at you, it's take forever - and eventually the friction would burn." He gives a fake shudder.

Oh no, gummed to death. Damaris gives him a wide-eyed horrified sort of look, clasping her hands at her chest. "I would _much_ rather be gummed to pieces when dead," she agrees. "Rather than alive. Because - yes. You're very right." A mock shudder of her own. "Perhaps I will have to apologize for my transgressions in the kitchen, so that they will not send me to the evil babies." E'gin smiles thoughtfully, "It would be a reasonable to decision. Those kids can be rough. My sister is in there, I know." With that, he gives a slight nod of farewell, "Well I should get back to Vys and get ready for drills." He points off in the general direction of his brown, "It was nice to meet you, Damaris. I hope that they let you back in the kitchens, or at the very least that you are set on fire by toddlers."

"I don't think I've ever had someone wish me being lit on fire and mean it in a _positive_ way," Damaris muses aloud, and then she's flashing him another smile. She turns to retrieve her fallen mug, eying it and her skirt for a moment. "And I should probably go get changed," she says. "Thank you." Her attention swings back up to him, shifting briefly in the general direction he's pointed before it comes back. "It was...very nice to meet you too, E'gin. Enjoy your drills."
