"Farideh, are you even listening?"

She had been daydreaming, spinning a story of saving her Hold from ruin. Everyone had cheered for her. For 'her'. They had chanted her name, over and over again, until the illusion shattered like a hundred mirror pieces.

"What?" Farideh lifted her head from the satin-y pillow on the settee, brushing wild tangles of hair from her eyes, so she could give her sister her full attention.

Teoma was sitting in front of a vanity, pulling a brush through her golden hair until it shone. Her face showed disapproval, centered on Farideh.

"You are hopeless," the older sister murmured with a shake of her head.

"Oh, I don't know, mother seems to think I've got potential." Farideh flopped back with a sigh, flinging a hand dramatically over her brow.

"Hardly," Teoma clucked, setting the brush down. "I was saying that you need to be on your best behavior."

"Yeah, that's what everyone else says, like I'm ever 'not' on my best behavior," the younger sister said with a smirk.

They both knew what her 'best' was - back talking, blurting outrageous opinions, and flouting traditional etiquette without a care.

"We are only looking out for you. We want you to be happy." Teoma looked earnest.

Farideh sighed again and rolled her eyes, letting her head drop off the side of the couch. "What about you? You think it's 'best' you marry some stranger who has slept with more women than the stable's stallion has?"

"Really, Fari, you are so crude sometimes." Distaste was written all over the pretty blonde's face.

"I'm only looking out for you," she parroted back sweetly, batting her long eyelashes.

"I am not concerned about your feelings. I am doing what is right. Mishal is an upstanding man, he will make a wonderful husband, and I would love it if you supported my decisions."

Farideh covered her eyes. "You're not thinking clearly. You're letting his pretty face get in the way of who he really is. Just last turn we were talking about what a laughingstock he is! Playboy of Igen, is what they call him! Have some sense, Teo."

Teoma lifted a hand, standing to shake out her brilliant green skirts with the other. "I am not going to have it, Fari. I am marrying him. You cannot stop me." One last narrow-eyed stare was spared her younger sibling before she flounced from the room.

Farideh's eyes followed the retreating figure of her sister, her lips twisting in distaste. It wouldn't do - it simply wouldn't do.

She looked down as her stomach rumbled, reminded how hungry she was. She would take a brief detour to the kitchens and beg for sticky buns. Then, she would begin planning how to ruin their relationship.
