Nursery, High Reaches Weyr
The double door to the nursery is sturdy skybroom and a good three inches thick, meant to contain the natural noisiness of young children. Beyond the doors, a complex of interconnected, glowlit caverns houses the Weyr's infants and children under seven, opening out from a gaily painted foyer where an auntie usually sits to guide visitors and keep a rheumy eye out for would-be escapees.
Two large play caverns see the most everyday use, their smooth walls decorated with layers of more fanciful paintings left by generations of rider and resident offspring. While one cavern is nearly bare, intended mostly for running and roughhousing during inclement weather, the other is lined with shelves at the right height for short legs, stocked with suitable toys, games and crafting supplies aplenty. Beyond the play caverns are two 'quiet' rooms, one with cribs and cradles, the other with low cots for use during both naptime and nighttime sleeping, each with a small sleeping cubicle for nannies on duty during the night shift.

The assortment of bits of string and leftover embroidery thread so helpfully provided by the seamstresses have been laid out on the table around which a small group of weyrbrats have gathered. The main midmorning rigamarole of sorting out who wants which colours and explaining the braiding technique has been gone through. Now, for the most part, the kids are industriously going about their business, under the supervision of the nanny-turned-candidate. Tomic, for his part, is greatly enjoying being back with all his little buddies. It's to one of these that he's explaining, "They set up some explosives and did it really carefully," of the rescue he'd witnessed (from the back lines). Another 'brat wants to know, "How can you be careful with explosives?"

Still being just an apprentice, Sky is often assigned the duties of running about the weyr. Today's errand has him bringing snack to the nursery. He grins when he spots Tomic amid the gaggle of children. "Hey there, you kids ready for snack time?" he asks, being sure to keep the tray high so when they mob him the food doesn't wind up on everyone. "What are you guys working on?" he glances at the project in progress.

Several heads lift up at the mention of snack time, including the one to whom Tomic is trying to explain explosives, without really understanding them. "So they built it up and figured out where it would only make certain parts fall and..." Nope, he's not being listened to anymore. One chair scrapes out from the table. "Bracelets," supplies a girl. "For the hurt people," a boy adds, while getting up and heading straight over to stand in front of the baker, little hands on little hips, wearing a demanding expression. "From the cave-in," Tomic finishes, getting up himself.

Schuyler grins. "How nice!" he compliments the children. "Where should I put the snacks, Tom?" he asks, still keeping the tray high and out of little folks hands. He steps around the group of children looking about for a higher than children counter to put it down on. "Brought some Klah for you. Juice for the littles." he adds.

"Table's fine, man," says Tomic, a bit of a slow smile creeping over his face. "They're not dogs or anything. They can have manners." That last is directed more to the children than to the baker, with a look falling on the kid who'd had his hands on his hips. "You guys better move your bracelets so they don't get all covered in stuff, right?" Those bracelets, they get pushed mostly to the middle of the table, though some go to laps or pockets, even half-finished. "Thanks," Tomic nods for the klah, pulling the chair he'd just vacated back, so that Sky can have easy access to the table.

Schuyler nods and places the tray down, letting Tomic take the lead in how to get it to the kids. "That's a nice idea, having them make bracelets. It's good to feel needed." he says as if he knows. "And i figured anyone with all these kids to look after would want some hot klah." he grins, picking up one of the bracelets from the table. "Not bad, nice braid work." he offers.

"Hey, that's mine!" A brown-haired girl is making grabby-hands at that big baker who's taken her project. Tomic shrugs. "Everyone's been curious about it, but like... I don't know. I guess this way it' snot just scary and weird as much, maybe." He lays a big hand overtop of the klah, and calls upon one of the older boys to help distribute the fruit cups. "Fairly," is a reminder, only.

Schuyler smiles at the girl, "And you did a beautiful job with it." He puts it back in the pile. "You get a chance to visit Keysi? I can't even imagine what she went through in there..." the tone is low, not really meant for the now distracted children to hear.

That girl snatches it back, and sets to smoothing it out on the table, next to her cup of fruit. "Not yet," says the young man. "That's what we're doing these for, though. Besides, then the people who really know them can go visit them first." He sits back down, and points out a chair at a nearby table, should Schuyler want to sit also. "We've sort of been talking about that, actually." He nods towards the kids, who've set to digging, some with incredible intensity, some far less so. A few are surely still listening. Tomic doesn't seem bothered. "What it would've been like. How maybe they dealt with being scared..."

Schuyler takes the offered seat. "I visited her a few times while she was in there and helped her to the infirmary last night... She tried real hard to make everyone think she was less hurt than she was... but.... Well, I'm hoping after washing some of the grime off she looks better today." he picks at the edge of the table.

Tomic brings an ankle up to rest on his knee, and lets the klah mug (after he's lowered the level of liquid a bit by sipping it) settle on the side of that upraised foot. "That's got to be tough," is simply sympathetic. "Are you guys close?" Big words and longer sentences have most of the kids looking away, but not the boy who'd helped pass out the fruit. He's watching over the rim of his cup, spoon moving mechanically from his mouth to the food and back again.

Schuyler nods. "I just wanted to help, do something, you know?" he thinks about the question for a moment. "Not specifically, though I do think we're a bit closer after all of this. She's a friend and I look out for my friends." he gets thoughtful for a moment. "No one should have had to go through that."

Tomic nods to all that, tapping a thick index finger against the side of his mug. "The kids were all talking about how they'd get out. If it were them." A quick glance around the table, to check on everyone, including those who are listening in. "I think the scary part's probably not being able to do anything."

Schuyler nods. "I'd think losing track of the days would be hard... being in a place that was only lit by glows, not knowing what was going on outside..." he glances at the kids, not sure if what he's saying would scare them. "Though I think the riders had it worse, did you see Knioth in the bowl?" he frowns.

Tomic gives a little nod for the mention of the dragon, though truth be told, he might be thinking of any of the worried dragons he'd spotted and not know which was which. Except Vrianth. "At least they did have something, though. I mean, people could talk to them, and the riders could talk to their dragons, right? So they'd be worried about them, but then, maybe it would be comforting, too. Right? If they can see what the dragon sees and everything..."

Schuyler contemplates Tomic's comments. "I suppose that's true... though they'd also have twice the worry, right?" he shrugs. "But then, being totally alone would be worse, right. Ugh the whole thing is just wrong. Do they even know how it happened?"

Tomic shrugs those big shoulders of his, and then leans forward, bringing his jostled klah off his foot and trying to steady the waves in it, focused only on this task for a moment. When he looks back up to Schuyler, it's with a bit of a blank expression, until he's resumed their spot in the conversation. Remembered, he shakes his head. "Not that I've heard, yet. But people don't always just tell me things, either. Well," and there's a fond smile, "except for these guys." It's here that the boy pipes in with, "I think it was badder, for the ones with dragons."

Schuyler shrugs. "I'll lurk in the kitchens more, the gossip always send to find its way there." a smile to the boy. "Indeed." he says simply.

The boy gives a sage nod to the baker, letting his spoon drop into the cup, now empty of fruit, and pushing it away lightly, solemnly. "When you really, really like someone and they aren't there," he says when Tomic looks to him, "it's worse." Tomic just presses his lips into a line and says, "Hmm."

Schuyler peers at the boy. "Wise beyond your years aren't you." he comments, looking around and seeing most of the cups are empty now. "I should probably get this stuff back to the kitchens. Find me if you go visit Keysi and I'll come with you, ok?" he starts gathering the cups.

"Yeah," agrees Tomic, downing the rest of that klah - which is most of it - and then getting that mug back on Schuyler's tray. "I'll do my best, anyway." And once the baker leaves, Tomic will tap one of the kids sitting next to the solemn boy to trade places as they finish up their crafting.
