| The Day of Memories had arrived before he'd really prepared himself for it: suddenly, it was today, and people will engaging in their usual rituals and K'del was... He visited the Weyrleader's Weyr for the first time in exactly eight months (the anniversary: it would be today, of course. The 28th of the month would never be the same again), that day, slipping in unseen. It was quiet; empty. Not of furniture, but of all the things that had made it his. Theirs. It had been theirs. He slid his hands over the wood of the bed, remembering the times they'd spent in there. The little girl that ought to be with him, today, blonde-haired and beautiful, had not been conceived in that bed. That bed was gone. But this one... He stopped himself from laying down on it. It would do no good. In the little bathing chamber, there was no visible sign of the violent death perpetrated here. No blood, no nothing. He had fond memories of here, too, but they were gone now: all he could see, in his mind's eye, was her body in the ground, her lifeless eyes. He sat on the floor, balled up, and quietly, opened his mouth. "It's the day of memories, Io. I guess that's a weyr tradition and-- but you experienced them, too. It's been eight months since you were taken, and it seemed like... "I thought I should visit the island again, but I can't. I don't think I want to see it. We didn't have happy times there. Just you. I only had awful times." He laid his hand flat upon the floor, felt the cold stone beneath it. "I miss you. Always." He talked to her for hours, laying out his feelings, relieving himself of them. He cried. Later, he drank. The next day? He got back to living. He knew the answer, now. He'd been dwelling on it for months: did he want the Weyrleadership back? Yes. Yes, he did. He knew it when the competitive, protective side of himself began to come out; he knew it when so many people started watching both young queens. He knew it when he found himself feeling so adrift, so out of the loop and uninvolved, with all these newcomers. He hated it. He'd spent more than a decade with fingers in all the official business of High Reaches Weyr, and now, with eight months of being outside of that behind him, he found he could no longer bear it. You'll chase her, when she flies? It was such a casual thing, really, a thought aimed towards his dragon as the bronze flew circles around the spires. You'll catch her? « I intend to. » Cadejoth was confident, answering his rider with a rattle of chains, and a whisper of fire and smoke. « We will be glorious together. » K'del bit back his amusement. You always did have a thing for daughters. « Daughters? » Cadejoth has forgotten. Cadejoth has forgotten a great many things, and this doesn't bother his rider. They've had their vacation. They've had their reprieve. Someone needs to lead this Weyr into the future, and K'del is determined that it will be him. For Iolene. And for us. |

< This vig is both determined and triumphant. Happy to see K'del start to get his head together. c:
Edit: Oh sure, make it also sad and tuggy at the heart strings. ;^; Poor K'del.

Next thing you know, he'll have Iolene's scarf wrapped around his bicep as he goes into battle.
