| "Daddy?" K'del woke to the sensation of tiny hands tugging at his curls, and rolled over. A pair of enormous blue eyes stared back at him, full of hope. She was a turn and a half old, now, and more and more like her mother every day, but for the twine of her curls. Daddy's little girl - he'd always been the one she wanted, first thing in the morning. "Play, daddy?" Iolene was often too tired, these mornings, anyway. Her second pregnancy was wearing on her, and if he could keep their daughter quietly busy for a few more hours, well, that would be ideal: Io needed the sleep. He grinned at his daughter, putting one finger to his lips for silence, before scooping her up into his arms, and carrying her out into the main Weyr. They'd moved into Io's Weyr after Rielsath's flight, when K'del had lost his knot. It had felt strange, at first, not being Weyrleader. Ten and a half turns, and then it was over. But U'ten had been Sleet's Wingsecond for Turns, and he was a good leader. They'd worked well in making the transition; even now, U'ten occasionally asked for K'del's thoughts, and he liked that. It made it easier to settle back into Wingrider life - not that that had lasted for long. He'd let Sisha be Wingleader, on the basis he'd never been much of one anyway... and a few months later, she'd offered him Wingsecond. "I'm going to retire, sooner or later," she said. "You might as well step up afterwards." He liked Wingsecond. He had interesting things to do, but at the end of the day he got to go home, and just spend time with his family. The boys - who loved how much more time he had for them, now - and Io and Adelene, too. One big happy family... sort of. "Daddy." He turned his attention back to his daughter, who was now standing in front of him, little hands on little hips. "Sorry, sweetheart. Where were we?" Adie had both of her brothers wrapped around her little finger. Sometimes, K'del worried what would happen when she had a little brother or sister, too. Would she resent this new sibling? Would she take him or her under her wing? They'd talked about it, but she was still so little-- it was hard to know how much she really understood, sometimes. Io flew in the queen's wing, now, working alongside Lujayn, Azaylia and Brieli. It seemed like a good team, but he tried to stay out of their politics, now; that was Io's business, not his. The two youngest queens would be clutching, soon, and, he suspected, Ysavaeth would rise again sometime after the new baby was born. He hoped it wouldn't happen until the next lot of weyrlings were graduated - two clutches at once were surely plenty. It didn't matter, though, not really. High Reaches was in a good place. Four queens; that was nice. A leadership pair that worked well together; that was wonderful. The sound of footsteps behind them distracted both. There was Io, one hand on the curve of her belly, the other resting at her side. She looked sleepy and content; she looked beautiful. "Mama!" Adelene threw herself at her mother, and K'del followed close behind. He wrapped one arm around his weyrmate's shoulders, pressing a kiss to her temple, as she held their daughter. Sometimes, K'del felt like his heart would burst. He loved them both so much. |
