The last voice fading into silence, Ghena found herself alone in the dark.

« Thine sisters are safe, but thou art hurt. » Knoith's familiar voice came then, tinged with concern and worry. Ghena could feel the ache of his claws echoed in the beds of her own nails. The muscles where he had beat his wings frantic.

I'm fine. She lied.

But he knew her pain just as she knew his. It hurt to breathe. Hurt to move, and she was feeling more rapidly numb.

« My squire, thou shalt be rescued from thine plight. »

Ghena almost sobbed at the desperation she could feel in his voice. He was the stalwart one, the one who held all the crazy bits of her soul together. He was her champion, her hero.

I will be fine. She lied again, willing it to be true. It took incredible effort, focusing on those lessons she hadn't thought about since weyrlinghood. Blocking out the pain and terror she felt, keeping them from the places his mind touched.

See, I'm already feeling better.

He seemed to accept it then. Enough that she felt him slip into a deep and exhausted sleep. Her concentration held at least until she knew it wouldn't disturb him. Until she was truly alone in her own mind.

Ghena sobbed.
