The illness that has been ravaging the exiles remains at large, though new infections are decreasing steadily. Still, those candidate dorms - once far too crowded - are looking markedly empty in comparison. There is some good news, though, news that spreads through the weyr like wildfire after an early-morning meeting between the few remaining exile elders, and the weyr's Weyrleaders. Exactly what was discussed has not been made public by either party, but the net result is this: the exiles are now free to move throughout the weyr. For the moment, as they get used to the weyr and recover their strength, their meals will still be served in their accommodations, but the general intention is that over time, that will be less and less necessary. The Headwoman and her staff are already going about attempting to find jobs for people, while the youngest exiles are encouraged to make the most of the education being offered to them. Moreover, those exiles who wish to consider formally pursuing a craft have been encouraged to put their names forward. It seems, then, that the exiles are not going home. But what about the ones who want to? And why are they not allowed to actually leave the weyr? So many questions linger there, unanswered.
