| Seani said no. She wasn't really used to saying no - not even with the children, who were mostly misdirected rather than forbidden. The word felt strange on her tongue, and the vehemence she felt surprised even her. It certainly surprised Giorda, who spent several moments struggling for words before she finally said, "But-- but Seani, I thought you'd relish the opportunity. It's not one many people get! Don't want you a dragon to love you forever?" Seani didn't. She wasn't sure why, but the idea had no appeal. Perhaps it helped that she loved her work. There was another part, of course, that part that said 'I don't want to be just another one of the exiles', and a lot of them were Standing. You couldn't miss that, not even when you kept your distance as much as Seani did. "Thank you," she told Giorda. "Thank you, but no. I'd rather keep my position in the nurseries." The Headwoman shook her head, watching her quizzically for several moments before she took her leave. And Seani felt herself smiling. She felt... she felt as though she'd passed some kind of test, even if it had only been self-inflicted. They asked me because I came from the island, she told herself, as she walked back to the dorm she shared with those other girls. But I've moved on. I don't feel guilty. I shouldn't have to feel guilty. She said no when Cason asked, too - and the others, one by one. They asked her to think about it; they encouraged her to give it a try, that it might be the best thing. "For the sake of your people, Ani," Cason told her. "For all of us. Even Jaques is going to. And Evie. Most of your peers." "No," she told him. "I'm sorry. No." She avoided them after that. |
