| The world outside his shell was big. Bigger than Akluseth had dreamed or imagined from inside the darkness and safety of his shell. It was just so very, very, damn big. The world inside her mind was big too. Filled with words, images, sensations, and emotions he couldn't even begin to fathom. Sunsets over distant beaches with sand as pale as snow or blacker than night. Dusty caravan trails, mountains crowned with trees. Thick jungle or empty desert. Icy winters spent near warm hearths. He wanted more than anything to explore all of it together, to indulge their restless spirits together. She was his. It was different, different than Edyis had expected. The alien salt sea mind now forever linked with her own. She tested it at first, but now it was overwhelming, that lack of focus and difficulty sitting still. He knew nothing, understood nothing, things that were so basic she took them for granted on instinct had to be explained. Words here were useless. He didn't comprehend them, they floated away like driftwood on the tide. He had to be shown, given images and sensations. It was exhausting. He was exhausting. Both fell asleep. The nightmares came as they always did on the nights she didn't drink to silence them. The searing heat that blistered skin the flames dancing, mocking, consuming everything they touched. The smell of burnt flesh as a bandage was changed, the way her fingers would shake when they applied numbweed. Watching another funeral pyre light up and then flashes of the bazaar fire, that frozen nightmare replaying over and over. Suddenly, the waves rushed in, flame hissing as it dies. The smell of the sea overtaking her senses, leaving her floating weightlessly in the midst of his vast waters. Akluseth didn't understand it, those images and sensations, that gaping hole he could feel in his lifemate. He couldn't understand it, why any of those faces were important, why such thoughts would race through her sleeping mind. It didn't occur to him to call for help, he simply acted, pouring his depthless oceans into her mind. Together they drifted peacefully on the waves. There were no more nightmares that night. |
