| The letter arrived during the after-lecture hours, handed to Farideh by one of the lower cavern girls, with a vacuous look and a shrug. She waited until the girl had left, and sat down on her cot, cross-legged, to read the missive. It was curious, but not wholly unexpected; she suspected it was from Lycinea or her family, and was pleasantly surprised to find out it was neither-- until she read the contents. Dear Farideh, Drex says you won't visit because you have a gold dragon now and are too busy for us. I said he was wrong. Prove me right. I had to kill some men today but it's fine because they needed to die. My authority is too important. I think they all learned their lessons though so things will be fine. I will let you know when we come ashore. You can visit. Not Tillek, though. Itsy The problem with letters was that one couldn't speak to the person, face-to-face, to properly show one's outrage and emotion. Pinching the bridge of her nose, Farideh sighed. She really ought to keep better company, especially now. What was she to do? Write back? No, she answered herself, resoundingly. Not that she even knew where they were, or how to get a letter back to them in return; it was easier, on Itsy's end, when she was stranded at the Reaches. Marooned, one might say! Farideh wasn't even aware of Roszadyth subtle presence in her mind, flipping through those many, distant memories, until the gold echoed a familiar laugh. It was a surprise, more so than the letter. She was always so careful now, to keep the unsavory parts, and her feelings about the sailors, away from the gold's still-fresh mind; would she, could she, understand? Swishing fabric - a comforting sound by now - preceded Roszadyth's words. « You should not try to hide the depth of your emotion. How could I doubt any friend of yours? » Her words, dappled as they were, still gave Farideh pause. Yes, they are my friends, but they are a far, far way away. « On the ocean? » Yes. On a ship. One day, when you can fly, we'll go to one of the Holds and you can look at the ships. Some of them are beautiful, and others, are not. Roszadyth was quiet for a span of minutes, though her touch was just there, on the fringes. Familiar, warm, but musing. « Why must she kill? » Farideh was caught off guard, and took her time in answering. I'm not sure. I assume-- I don't know-- that it was necessary. That's what her letter says. « As we must kill to eat? » No, love. No-- it's, more complicated. I would never, have never, thought of killing another person. I can't imagine ever needing to, but sailing is supposedly complicated. « She has to do what she must? » Relief flooded Farideh at her dragon's sensible answer to such a strife-riddled situation. I suppose. If someone was threatening her life, likewise, it would only make sense to defend herself, and if there is death in the process-- « Is their ship very beautiful? » Farideh laughed out loud, and stood, folding the letter into a square, that she tucked safely into her pillowcase. I don't know. I've never seen it. « Then we must go, when she calls. » Roszadyth was pleased, and that pleased Farideh. Yes. I suppose, we must. |
