High Reaches Hold's Turnover celebration was, as one might expect, rather more subdued than in previous Turns. While the Lord and his children made appearances throughout the day -- alternately accompanied by Lord Wulfan or Lady Daroda, by early evening they had retired to their quarters.

On day 6, month 1, the trial of the murderer of Lady Issedi, identified as Breshak, is held. This takes most of the morning, with witnesses coming forward, while the Lord (surrounded by his Council -- though not noteably the exile Rilka) -- listen. After all the witnesses have spoken, as well as the defendant's assigned harper representative, Lord Devaki takes time to deliberate and talk with his Council.

Just before sundown, Lord Devaki issues the following judgement: "In the case of the accused, Breshak, I find him guilty of the murder of the Lady Issedi of High Reaches Hold." He pauses here, to gather his thoughts, to murmurs in the crowd. "The murder of someone, even as punishment for such a terrible crime, is no light matter. It gives them no room for reform, no room to change their opinion. Breshak is not the only one to misunderstand the exiles, and what they endured unfairly. So, after consideration, I sentence Breshak to thirty Turns of labor at the western islands, working with the former exiles that live there. I hope, through experience, he will grow and develop an understanding of this piece of history that is a part of High Reaches, and a part of our future, too."

The reaction to this news is mixed -- some are upset that the Lord chose not to end the life of the man who murdered their Lady, while others find it an exemplary and merciful stroke. While there's no mention of the fate of Rilka -- who has been largely confined to her room since the incident -- on dawn of day 6 when Breshak is placed on the "Maddy", the former exile is seen on deck briefly, too, before the ship departs.

By midday of day 7, word spreads of a perhaps surprising development: that the Guard Captain Raum firmly but politely advised all Glacier Wing riders that their services were no longer required at the Hold, a request that is rumored to be followed up with a more official one to the Weyrleaders.

To: K'del, Azayla

Weyrleaders,

While I am grateful for the support of Glacier Wing in this time of unrest, their presence is also a reminder of what has occured. Thus, I respectfully request the withdrawal of all Glacier riders from the Hold. As ever, we welcome the continued presence of P'ken and Haibroth, and your personal support during this time.

Lord Devaki High Reaches Hold

K'del's reply is prompt; it arrives within the day.

Lord Devaki,

As per your wishes, Glacier has been withdrawn; normal sweepriding and watchrider duty will recommence immediately. Should there be anything else my wings can offer, at any time, please don't hesitate to ask.

K'del Cadejoth's rider Weyrleader, High Reaches Weyr
