| Just over three weeks after the discovery of those bones was initially made, Lord Aughan of Crom called together his senior posted Harper, High Reaches Weyrleader K'del, and Holder Browden, to discuss his decision. In effect, he has decided that he cannot, in good conscience, allow outsiders - that is, the Weyr - to touch the final resting place of these unfortunate Cromese; he understands that the custom of burying the dead may seem foreign to the weyr, but that it is how things are done with his people, and that it has meaning. In short, he requested that the deal between the hold and weyr be terminated, and in exchange, he will buy back all equipment and supplies purchased by the weyr, as well as provide extra tithes this season and the next, to make up for the inconvenience. Holder Browden, due to his belief that the bones may belong to his ancestors, has been given the task of reburying them, as well as conducting a survey of the land to ensure that no further remains - human or otherwise - are found. It's a decision that, on paper, means the weyr makes no particular loss on the deal, but that doesn't mean public sentiment supports it wholeheartedly. Questions still remain: DID Browden have something to do with the bones? Was Crom in on it, if so? How did they know so much about what the Weyr was up to? Was this doomed to failure from the beginning? In the end, this feeble end to what could have been a good thing for the weyr has done nothing but damage to the already rocky leadership of High Reaches' young Weyrleader. |
