He knew the situation was bad.

He didn't know it was dire.

A dramatic thought, to be sure, but few others would view it in quite the same way. A breach in the inventory-taking process was inconceivable - or would have been, if this were Black Cliff. It was a Weyr. It should have been managed better. Despite Shevena's work, however, it seemed that things still slipped through the cracks.

Or, more accurately, walked right out of the stores.

Even if most - or all - was returned.

Even if more was returned than was thought to be missing.

Edric sat back from the desk and tipped his head back. With eyes shut and lips pressed into a bloodless line, the man ran the latest series of numbers through his head again.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, he thought. Someone is lying. Someone is wrong.

He had to know who was working and when. He had to know who would have had access. He had to know who would have benefitted. Though he didn't need to, he made the notes anyway. Their ranks need to be scoured, he though dryly. Another project. Another note.

The Steward stood and stretched, looming over the borrowed desk in the equally borrowed quarters. The Weyr had initially offered something larger, more appropriate for his station - but he declined. It was too much room - and not secluded enough. He leaned forward, fingers resting lightly on the desk as he studied the paperwork there.

Of course the one other person that might know something other than the weyrling would conveniently go missing. Edric snorted. Dead was the reality, even if the dragons didn't declare it as they usually did. Of course Lilah was dead. And why wouldn't she be?

Too convenient, was the first thought, followed by a snort. No. I doubt she's half as clever as she thinks. Perhaps a coward. Perhaps a fool. He didn't know. Couldn't. He made a note to speak with X'vin later about her - and the weyrling, Dee. The line of thought was cut off cleanly with that resolution and his attentions returned, as they so often did for the past few sevendays, to the work at hand.

The budgets would need research first; tightening second. Everything was on the table; foodstuffs, textiles, oil, wood, leather, other crafted goods of all sorts... stipends, eventually. He pursed his lips and leaned over to shift some papers from one stack to another. Another sevenday, possibly two. He might have something workable for Erinta by then.

If there are no other inaccuracies.

Someone is always lying. Fort totally doesn't need this. Which is why it's got to continue.

I swear, if Edric has to burn the place to the ground... (he wouldn't, but he WOULD pay someone else to do it)
