Stalactites hang high above this enormous cavern like a jagged chandelier
or an inversion of the Spires themselves, but shadows cling to them
instead of light. Below lie great tables arranged in rows, each large
enough to serve a fighting wing, while in the nooks and alcoves around the
cavern's edge sit more sensibly-sized tables, from six- and eight-seaters
down to intimate spots for just a couple of diners. The only really open
space is around the kitchen entrance, smelling of food and rarely quiet,
and by the nearby serving tables with their long buffet of the day's
offerings.
Tapestries on the smooth walls -- some faded and others newly woven --
only slightly mute the sea of sound when a meal is in full swing, but they
add cheerfulness augmented by the glowlight from wall sconces and the
centerpieces of each table. Still, shadows always creep along the ceiling
and into the mouths of the exits -- the myriad small hallways at one end
of the cavern and, at the other, the twisting tunnel to the bowl near an
array of coathooks and and hatracks -- and late at night, when the glows
are allowed to dim, the chamber can seem very dark indeed. It's fairly late in the evening, and while there is still foot traffic through the living cavern there are relatively few taking up places at tables. Serin is sitting with a small group of crafters who all appear to be just using the place as somewhere to chat. A couple women and a guy are with him, but they're starting to clean up in front of them as though they're preparing to head out. "Oh, come now, don't leave me here all by myself." Serin complains, but wherever it is that they're leaving doesn't seem to appeal enough for him to invite himself along to join them, either. "Fine, fine. I'll see you guys later." He adds, lifting a hand to wave as he starts collecting his things and they head off to leave the living cavern and out towards the bowl. L'sha strolls into the cavern as Serin's friends are arriving, and he smiles and nods a greeting to them as they pass. He's still in his colorful riding leathers, apparently just having returned from drills. He starts to head toward the serving tables when he catches sight of Serin and heads his way. He stops and stands across from the starsmith at his table, but doesn't sit just yet. "Hi there, sweetie, how are you?" He grins sweetly. Serin has part of a left over cookie in front of him, which he picks up and waves at L'sha. "You didn't just get done working, did you? Hungry?" He asks, arching a brow and not getting up from where he's sitting even if he did gather up his cutlery onto his plate. "I'm /abandoned/. But, they did need baths. The whole lot of them." He glances to where his friends left and scrunches his nose. "You need one too, do you? Probably..." He narrows his eyes at L'sha and then smirks. L'sha nods. "Mmm-hmm, just got done drilling. I'm famished, actually." His eyes briefly follow the waving cookie before returning to Serin. "Awww, poor thing." He mock-pouts, sticking out his lower lip, then smiles. "I do need a bath, but first I need to eat! be right back." He heads over to the tables and quickly fixes a plate of food and a glass of red wine. He returns and sets his plate down next to Serin. "So what was so important that your friends decided to abandon you?" He cuts a large piece of wherry, pops it in his mouth and starts to chew. "That's right. Poor me." Serin says with a quick nod, though can't help but grin and shrug his shoulders. "You better not stink." He quips before L'sha wanders off to grab some of the food and drink, leaving him to poke some more at the bit of leftovers on his plate with the fork and take another bite out of his dessert. "Baths. Super important things that I still believe should be done /before/ eating. But, that's just me." He answers, slouching and propping his head up and sighing. "I do appreciate that they're cleaning up before bed though. You should smell some of the beastcrafters." L'sha blinks. "Umm, I can't promise that I don't stink, sorry. But I'm too hungry to take a bath before dinner! And I've been working all day, so it's pretty much a given. I hope I don't smell as bad as the beastcrafters." He digs into a large pile of mashed tubers, taking care to swallow before talking. "I do try to bathe as often as I can, I like to smell nice. You always smell nice, though." "Don't you take some snacks or something with you? Or do they make you work hungry? That hardly seems like it'd be a good thing." Serin wonders, and so far hasn't made a big scene about moving away from L'sha even if there is a bit of an odor about. "Not as bad as the beastcrafters." He agrees, and slouches to prop his head up with an arm as he flickers his gaze between the random passers by and his company. "Beauty of being a Starsmith; I don't often have to get dirty." L'sha chuckles. "It's kinda hard to eat when you're a hundred lengths up with a helmet on in high winds. We burn up a lot of energy, so we have to eat a lot at breakfast and lunch break. And dinner, for that matter. I'm usually not hungry 'til the end of the day." He takes a large bite of a roll to demonstrate. He swallows again and grins. "I guess you only have to worry about spilling ink or getting chalk dust in your hair." Serin shrugs his shoulders. "Sounds like a lot of work. Too much for me. I like to snack all day and I'd probably be trying to shove snacks into pockets anyways." He decides, if he were to ever be a rider. He scrunches his nose at the big bites, and rolls his eyes. "Yeah yeah. Ink stains and chalk in my hair. How anyone keeps their hands off me, I'll never know." He takes a big bite out of his cookie, and sighs. "What happened to the day. One second it's morning, and now it's dark." L'sha suddenly remembers his manners after seeing Serin's reaction and starts taking smaller bites. "Sorry, my stomach kind of took over. It is a lot of hard work, but you get used to it, and it's for a good cause." He leans over and whispers in Serin's ear, "Well, I can't keep my hands off you." He bites Serin's earlobe playfully, not hard enough to hurt, then leans back over to his meal, giggling. "I know, right? Where does the time go? Although I'd think that Starsmiths would prefer the night." "Hey, I'm not judging." Serin says, even if he likely secretly is, and shakes his head, "I'd been considering asking to stand for the next clutch, but in a lot of ways I wonder if it'd even be something I'd really want." He can't help but snicker and push L'sha away a bit after having his ear nibbled at. "That /tickles/, and I like the night well enough. Just seems days are flying by lately, and it's been a while since I saw you last. How's Rillaeth?" L'sha gasps, "Oh, really? That's great! I think you'd make a great rider. Even if you're adverse to hard work. It is a big commitment, but there's really nothing else like it. I mean, it's your decision, of course, and you should really think about it, but I think it's definitely worth it. Rillaeth is doing really well!" "I think you've got too many clouds in your head." Serin says and pushes at L'sha's shoulder. "They say the same thing about people having kids: there's nothing like it. But, I'm not exactly rushing off to try that either." He says with a smirk, and then adds, "But, I'm getting older and I won't be an Apprentice forever. I guess it's more that I worry that I'll miss something I can never get back, more than actually /wanting/ to be a rider. I don't even know if that makes sense. I'm very adverse to hard work, too." L'sha giggles again as Serin pushes him. "Well, you're not the first to accuse me of that. I guess I am pretty overly-optimistic." He mops up the remaining gravy on his plate with the last of the roll and pops it into his mouth. "Well, if you do stand, try to think more positively, the hatchlings might pick up on that and pass you by. Then again, they might not. I've seen candidates with terrible attitudes impress and become excellent riders. You never know, really. Dragons will often see something in a candidate that even the candidate doesn't know is in him. Who knows how they do it." "You are, even if I don't know you all that well." Serin says with a grin, finishing off his cookie and nodding. "I still have to think about it. I'm not really sure if it's something I really want, but there's always next time too." He muses, looking down at his now pretty empty plate. "I don't think I have a terrible attitude at least, just a very easy going one. You headed to the baths after eating?" L'sha turns a bit pink and grins sheepishly. "Yeah, I guess that's just how I am. And don't get discouraged if you're passed over, there's always another clutch. Might be two clutches on the sands this time around, the flights were very close. No, not a terrible attitude at all. I was just making an example." He wipes his mouth on a napkin and finishes his glass of wine. "I think I will have a bath. Care to join me?" "I like my craft a lot, so it wouldn't be discouraging at all. It would just hurt my pride." Serin says and nudges his plate on the table a bit as he glances towards the entrance to the cavern. There's a woman there that he waves at as she passes through, and then returns his attention to L'sha. "Love to. Meet you there in a bit? I just have to drop by and get a few things from the dorm." He asks, as he pushes himself to his feet and collects his plate from the table. |
