| Today's drills have been search-and-rescue focused, with large nets attached to straps allowing dragons and their riders the chance to learn how to try and scoop people up in them-- clearly, aimed at rescuing people out at sea. It's harder than it sounds, and though a few of Snowdrift's long-term members have it down, most everyone else is varying stages of precision and perfection. At long last, however, Mielline's subtle hand gesture notifies R'vel, and soon after the dragons are landing or heading home, their riders disbanding in this direction or that. « Would you stay behind? » Corobith wonders of Akluseth. « Just for a moment or two. » Mielline lounges against her dragon, graceful and well-presented, even after all that time in the air. Akluseth is naturally fascinated by the nets, and truthfully the whole concept of fishing for people. While he's still not perhaps as precise as some, he makes up for it in the energy he brings to the affair. Edyis is as she always is, quiet and focused on the task at hand, but still a little bit shy around her new wingmates. « Can we play with the nets again if we do? » Which is probably as close to a yes sir, as the buoyant brown ever truly gets. Edyis slips the cap off, letting her quickly growing braid loose, setting the charms in it to tinkle as it gets smoothed over one shoulder. "You needed us to stay behind Ma'am. " Ed asks, with a salute. « Maybe next time. » Corobith is more amused than wearied by Akluseth's enthusiasm; it's good to have the young around. It makes a blue feel younger than he is. "Mm," agrees Mielline, straightening as Edyis approaches. "Jo mentioned you had an interesting encounter at Tillek, a while back. I wanted to ask about it." It's snowing out here, but this doesn't seem to bother her; presumably, however, it doesn't mean she intends a long conference. The slosh of his tides might suggest a little bit of sulkiness, but it recedes easily enough. « Darn. » Edyis gives a curt nod. "Yes Ma'am." dipping her chin into her scarf a little for warmth. "I assume you mean the Starcrafter?" Corobith raises the equivalent of a mental eyebrow as if to say 'now, now.' Still. "Mm," agrees Mielline, nodding for emphasis. "The starcrafter. The map-maker. What did you make of her?" Beat. "And for that matter, do you suppose she has any interest in working for-- or with-- the Weyr more officially?" "She's... how to phrase it." Edyis tilts her head a moment as if searching for the right word, "Bubbly? I think she'd have Akluseth matched for energy and enthusiasm. Seems to be passionate about her work, I think she's got it in her head to accomplish what she sets out to do, whether it's officially or unofficially." The former scribe notes with a smirk. "I sort of agreed to help out in my off time if something official couldn't be worked out. It's impossible to say no to that kind of enthusiasm." "I admire that in a person," says Mielline, abruptly all teeth. She may be talking about Pia; she may equally be talking about Edyis herself. "I'd like to do something official. I think-- and the Weyrleaders think-- that there is potential in our relationships with the crafts. Do you expect to end up at Tillek again anytime soon, I wonder?" "My baby brother is there, and I wind up visiting quite a bit to be honest, though usually I go sans knot and leathers. Don't want to stir anything up with the way the hold treated searching this time around." And there is another nod, "I thought the same thing when she was talking about not being able to visit places and get the charting done. I traveled with a trader caravan once, takes months to get anywhere. Seems like it would go a long way to foster good will, especially with the beastcraft's new stance." Mielline dusts some snow off of her hair with one hand, nodding. "If you see her again," she says, "you might mention the Weyr would be interested in negotiating with her craft over this. Perhaps they could consider renegotiating her posting for the coming turn. Or," and she keeps her tone even, "if Akluseth thinks it worthwhile, you might offer her the possibility of a chance on our Sands. It would need to be negotiated with her craft, of course, but even they might see the benefits." Edyis smiles a little bit sheepishly. "I may have indirectly suggested she pose the idea to her Craft Masters, since it would be a lot easier to get the time to assist her if it was approached from an official capacity." She really does her best to look innocent, then. "If Seaweed brain takes a shine to her I doubt I could stop him either, You think you could spare me for a day in the next couple of sevens? I can run her by that stretch of coastline, he can get a feel for her and I can see if she made any progress? Unless you think someone else might be more suited to the task." "No," says Mielline, abruptly smiling. "No, I think you're exactly the right person for the task. Consider this an assignment, Edyis. Arrange it with her and let me know the day; I'll make sure you're not scheduled for anything else. See how it goes. She might, after all, get air-sick." And that would rather put a stop to any of these plans! "It may or may not happen, but it is an excellent scoping exercise. And if she does consider the Search option, Edyis? Promise her that there would be a place for her, here, to continue her work. An official arrangement. That would be the intention." There is the briefest sugestion of a child like smile at the praise, but it melts in an instant to something a little more reserved. "Akluseth will be happy to have the excuse to go south for a bath if that happens." Edyis comments of the airsickness. « Not to mention grossed out. Ew. Can't humans keep their food in their stomachs? » "Yes Ma'am." Edyis states with a crisp salute and a wild grin. « It won't be the first time or the last, » puts in Coroboth, amused. « But don't forget that, once upon a time, your rider had to shovel your leavings. » Those days, before they could between. Yuck. Mielline returns the salute, crisp but also relaxed. "Good," she says. "Let me know once everything is arranged. I look forward to hearing back. Now-- go get yourselves cleaned up before you freeze." Dismissed! |
