History

Fisherman's daughter. Candidate. Goldrider. Weyrwoman. Mother. Alcoholic. Dead.

All words that could describe High Reaches' late Weyrwoman. But the story is always more complicated than titles.

The Beginning

Satiet was born in a small fishing hovel dubbed Sea's Peak by its inhabitants. Truly, it was no more than a series of small caverns that housed approximately twenty different families or so. To say it was cramped was an understatement and families generally lived and died in the same cave designated 'home' regardless of how many children they had. So with five older siblings, all boys, life was interestingly tight.

In this close-knit society, Satiet and her brothers were an oddity. Their father had married outside the Reaches in a decision many considered mad, for their mother, Veylin, had been the posted harper riding for the general area. The remoteness made it seem more punishment than promotion, though very little ever bothered the free-spirited young woman. That is, until she fell in love with a taciturn, gently mannered, rough-handed fisherman. Just months after her arrival, he proposed and unwilling to ride further from her little romance than necesary, Veylin quit her craft. Those in the hold thought he was crazy. Those at the hall thought she was. In another story, this may have ended differently, but in this one, the harper girl never looked back and found herself with a home, husband, and a group of dubious neighbors.

Satiet and her brothers always remarked joking (only by halves though), that their parents were the perfect husband and wife, truly in love and doting on each other, and slightly more negligent parents. To be fair, they loved their children, the first born being Veylin's especial (as they are prone to be), but it was their youngest, the long-awaited daughter, that received much of both parental and sibling spoiling.

From birth, Satiet was somewhat different. She wailed infrequently, seemed more curious than agitated, and once her needs were attended to in the precise manner in which she seemed to expect them (even as a baby/toddler's age), she grew quiet. By all accounts, she was considered a good baby, though... well, a little different. Babies are supposed to cry. They're supposed to exercise their lungs and demand attention as vocally as possible. The local midwife was known to wrinkle her nose and pucker her lips a little sourly when the subject of the birth of Veylin's youngest came up, but the good woman, having discovered the foreign harper girl wasn't so bad, kept her peace.

Between being spoiled and rough-housed by her brothers, along with a prediliction for being thoughtful (in the thinking way, if not the considerate one), Satiet grew into a keenly observant, manipulative little feminine creature. She wore what she assumed was the mantle of a high-born lady easily and ruled her little court of teenage girls and boys with what she presumed was a deft hand. In actuality, most of her peers were more afraid to not be her friend than they were impressed by her socio-political skills, particularly after one incident that somehow had the daughter of the hold's non-crafted baker sent away for good. Throughout all this, most all the adults of Sea's Peak had no idea, in that way adults are oblivious to the social structure of children, though some still found Veylin's little girl to be quite unsettling (even if they were unable to finger exactly why).

It was with a collective sigh of relief that Satiet was then Searched shortly before her 16th turn day.
