She really hadn't intended for things to escalate so quickly, not just a few days after talking.

It was strange, Jocelyn mused drowsily as she idly swirled a hand through the pleasantly warm bathwater, how easy it had all been to accomplish what necessity dictated, in the end. The alcohol was, no doubt, one of the only reasons she - no, they - had been successful.

He had been pleasant enough, if equally awkward.

"You're sure?" he had asked for the third time, halfway between removing one boot and the next. "It doesn't have to be like this, you know, no matter what you want the relationship between us to be like in the future."

"I'm hearing too many words, " she had shot back in response, perfectly timed to precede her tossing back a little glass of amber-something he had brought with him. It was tolerable - and more importantly, it took effect fast.

In combination with the small bottle of oil he had considerately, firmly informed her he would use ("I don't want you to be uncomfortable"), the languid haziness that temporarily dulled her self-containment managed to ensure that the experience would pass with relatively minimal discomfort.

Afterward, she remembered that he had given her an odd sort of look as he got dressed, leaning briefly over her to peer earnestly into her face.

"I'm fine, " she had said flatly before he could even ask, promptly pulling the sheets up to her still-clothed chest. "Good evening." Go away.

She only moved once he tipped his head for her dismissal and left.

« Jocelyn. »

She didn't answer in words, not then, drawing a bath and relaxing into it with a grimace, a wince for the dull, funny little ache within. It would be too awkward of a matter to thank Quinlys for her recommendation, but she had to acknowledge that, on the whole, it could have gone much worse.

Most importantly, it was done.

And she didn't understand how some people could manage enjoyment without an attachment already being in place. It had been nothing like her first evening with Lys. Nothing at all.

Aidavanth let her rider have her space, hovering on the periphery of her awareness with patient concern.

Finally, the redhead pulled herself from the bath, wrapping a towel about her frame as she quickly set about dressing again, securing her flight gear with hands that, she was pleased to note, didn't shake.

I'm fine, she repeated as she pushed her way out to the ledge where her lifemate waited, mounting with a forceful exhale. Briskly, aloud: "Go. Let's get this over with. We'll repeat the trip tomorrow and the day after that to make certain - "

« There will be no consequences, » Aidavanth assured faithfully as she sprang aloft, sharing Jocelyn's visual of their home, the airspace high above the western end of the bowl that provided the easiest access to her ledge.

They went between.
