| Caidelyth is so good. That's the first thing Ead learns about her, within mere moments of their bonding. There is something otherwordly about the little green, whose mind touches hers so gently and yet roots itself so deep. Caidelyth is sweet, and kind, and above all else she is good. And Ead feels so hopelessly inadequate, so impossibly unable to be worthy of this tiny creature who presents herself so straightforwardly, as though true honesty isn't the most difficult thing in the world. To Caidelyth, it seems to come as naturally as breathing, because she doesn't need a wall of lies to defend herself. Courageous. She's that, too. Where Ead hides behind her sharp edges and blunted words designed to strike and clobber, Caidelyth is true to herself. There's a quiet resolve in the green's gentle reproach whenever those too-harsh words leave Ead's lips to fall upon her chosen victim. It doesn't push -- she wouldn't force anyone to be other than what they are -- but the weyrling can feel the disappointment when her barbs hit their mark. But for the first time, she feels shame. The thought of letting this strange, good mind that is joined to hers down is one she cannot stomach. Apologies are foreign on her lips, but she makes begrudging use of them, for Caidelyth. Anything for Caidelyth. They lie together in the green's freshly cleaned wallow, with Ead curled around that tiny body. Caidelyth is oiled, fed, and on the edge of sleep, her shimmering sapphire consciousness fading in and out of her rider's thoughts. The girl lays careful fingers upon that hitch to the green's wing, a deformity that she has hesitated to bring up with the dragonhealers in these earliest of days. It sends a shiver down her spine to touch that part of the mainsail, an aversion born of both a worry of causing greater injury and a fear of what it might signify for their future. Though the dragonhealers will have the answer, the nightmares keep her away; dreams of being told they'll be grounded forever, with Caidelyth's wing forever holding them back. « Everything this will be fine, » is offered by the quietly reassuring voice that intrudes upon her thoughts, its notes like a lullaby, « It's only a little quirk. We have nothing to fear, you and I. Not while we're together. » The crackling warmth of a hearth seems to surround her, trying to reach far enough inside to warm that chill that encompasses her heart. But even Caidelyth, for all the good in her, cannot reach that far. You don't know that. It's a silent argument, as Ead's hands move from the disfigured wing to rest protectively around the green's body. You don't know me. You picked- She stops herself from thinking it, but their minds are freshly joined, and there's no keeping anything from the other. « I did not pick the wrong person, Ead. » It's strange how one so young can have more conviction in one thought than Ead has had in her entire life. « You are not a lost cause, and you don't bring out the worst in people. You have kindness in you, too. » Alright. It's a placating word, meant to soothe the little green to sleep. And Caidelyth being who she is, she does not question beyond that simple acknowledgement for now. The girl hums a quiet song, trying her hardest to keep her thoughts focused only on the next note until the young dragon's breathing smooths into the slow rise and fall of slumber. It's only then that she lapses into silence, staring at this strange creature to whom she is now bound for life. Caidelyth is wrong about her. Her family, her mentor, Dee, even Paislie. Ead has seen what being around her does to people, how it brings out their anger and sometimes worse. She knows what she is, and what she causes. But Caidelyth... she cannot do that to Caidelyth. I will not. Resolve, strong and diamond-clad is growing in her heart. This good, kind creature will not become anything less because of her. She may not be capable of kindness or courage, but Ead can protect the good heart that has chosen her. That is the one thing she can do. |
