Switchy Stitchy Egg

Jenryth inspects a new egg with careful, loving attention before she rolls it forward to join the others in the clutch.

Rushes of bold gold are bundled together against the pitch black surface of this egg. Like a broom propped against a wall, the switches of straw are angled to sweep through the sand at a moment's notice. Around the center of the egg, stitches of coppery green outline the girth, disappearing under the broom of switches and emerging again on the other side of the egg.

The Switchy Stitchy Egg explodes open with such a force that it seems to lift up and fly backwards before landing out of view of the candidates. The Disdainful Dark Brown Hatchling steps out from behind his sire and dam, deigning to give them a nod of respect before raising himself to his full height, glaring out at the candidates purposefully.

Disdainful Dark Brown

Though of average length and height, this dark brown's slender frame and long, thin limbs elongate him, making him seem stretched past proper proportion. His hide is an almost uniform shade of deep brown, shadows sculpting sharp angles along his musculature. He bears a muzzle distinctive for both its large size and the sharp hook at its tip: it's a nose made for looking down. Above it, his eyes are large and brooding but keenly intelligent. His wings continue that sulky theme; though dark like the rest of him, they are thin enough to gleam a proper shade of brown in sunlight, the large sails perfect for swooping and looming.

Temperament

Sarcastic, cynical, savagely private, that is your dragonet in a nutshell. As a hatchling, he won't be as set in his ways, but nevertheless, don't expect sweetness and light from him, if you ever do see either of those traits, be wary. His harsh exterior is meant to scare away all but the bravest comers. As a hatchling he'll be clumsier than even most young dragons are, his long limbs taking some time to grow into. Any criticism or, worse, laughter at his mistakes and stumbles will increase the natural snappishness he possessed.

Blessed in mind more than body, he is quick-witted and has a biting sense of humor, often cruel as he deflects his own insecurities with others'. At this stage, however, his retorts are likely to be still somewhat childish, not yet matured to the refined sneers of later life. Sensitive to criticism and easily frustrated in these early days, he will be prone to holding grudges as long as he remembers them: for a dragon, he has a good memory, and he'll seek to use you to catalog everything he doesn't want to forget soon, knowing his own limits.

Weyrlinghood is a learning stage for him, and he intends to take advantage of that. His body, ungainly dragon that he can be, may not be willing to cooperate at first, but he is untiring in his devotion to getting things right. Practice, practice: your dragonet will never be satisfied until he masters that skill, or rather, until he's the best there is. Let the other weyrlings snicker at him then! Though some young dragons spend most of their time sleeping, he will never be one of those; indeed, however tired he might be physically, he won't find it easy to shut his mind down and settle to sleep. His ideas are just too good to be set aside for the night, where he might forget them while he sleeps. Methodical, scientific-minded, he possesses patience when conducting one of his many experiments. In particular he'll be a neat eater, preferring to study his prey, to dissect it before eating, even when it's you still cutting it up for him. For good or bad, he is not wedded to tradition: his questioning mind is always seeking a better way to do things, a more efficient means of accomplishing his goals. That is ultimate Truth for him, and if his elders should insist on his following the status quo, expect a simmering rebellion from him. Intently private, he will probably keep these thoughts to himself as much as he can, but you, his closest and only true confidante, will be privy to the utter disdain he expresses for most everyone else. His secrecy leads to possessiveness, as he hoards both his things and his thoughts. Prying into his well of thoughts will well acquaint another dragon with his sharp, cutting tongue.

He will finally grow into his own in adulthood. His long hours of practice and the end of his rapid growth will finally grant him the grace and poise so long denied him. Indeed, though not a showy dragon like some, he possesses his own manner of movement: no wasted effort, only quick, deft motions that accomplish exactly what he wishes them to accomplish. He will have little patience for the extravagance of certain others, their squandering of energy on tricks and foolishness. In fact, this efficiency will characterize not only his body but his mind and words as well. The once-childish jabs at his critics will become refined, biting retorts and scathing insults, meant to cut to the quick in defense of himself and the few things he cares about. Though loyal, this loyalty is confined to you and, though to a lesser extent, his Weyr. Everything else is mutable for him; he will weigh options and choose the best for him and for you, opportunistic to the core. Past that, however, he has no enduring sentiment for people or other dragons. In a position of leadership, he will play favorites and bitterly resent any inference from higher-ups. For all this, he's a capable teacher, if the student can tolerant his disdain for any mistakes.

Mating flights present a conundrum for him. On the one hand, they make him more conscious than usual of his shortcomings, and he takes every loss as a personal affront. On the other, like any male, he wants to win, to prove his prowess. As a result of these two opposing forces, he's picky about the greens and golds he chases. Not just any will do: he has some unspoken criteria for choosing just the right ones, probably the ones he thinks he has the best chance of winning! And if this weren't enough to help him assure himself of victory, he is not a fair competitor when in the air, either. Tricky, devious, even when not in competition, he isn't above a little unfair advantage if it gets him what he wants; and flights can bring out the worst of that trait. As a planner, he will usually know exactly what he plans to do when that particular finally rises, a gift for strategy helps in this regard. Despite the planning that goes into every chase, if he should win, through skill or outright duplicity, he will hardly take further interest in his catch, even should he should sire a clutch on a gold. He will make a distant father at best, mechanically fulfilling his duties and nothing more.

Public Impression Message

Picky, picky, the Disdainful Dark Brown Hatchling loops past the candidates once more, measuring his strides carefully to avoid a misstep. This care makes for slow going, and he slows further as something, somewhere, catches his attention. Raising himself to full height and staring down that hooked snout, he snaps peevishly at a couple of nearby boys to send them scuttling away. Then, with his chosen to himself, he stills, staring up into the eyes of his rider.

Private Impression Message

It's there, a tendril of smoke, then a rumble building from within, feelings boiling up and overwhelming you. For a few seconds the assault is intense, another strong mind welling up inside yours and then...then it fades, reduced to a simmering sensation at the back of your thoughts. « Maja. There you are, » says the quiet, still voice, a voice that, though never loud, cuts through the cheers of the crowd and noise of the sands to single you out and check your own turbulent thoughts. The sensation from that other mind is at once gruffly disapproving of the length of time it took to find you, and secretly thrilled at the joining of your minds. « I am Vesereth. Come, you must feed me. »

Dragon Inspirations

Love him or hate him, Severus Snape is one of the most enigmatic and controversial characters of the Harry Potter universe. From the beginning of Harry's first year at Hogwarts he and Harry express a mutual hatred, and throughout the series his maliciousness toward the Boy Who Lived is always present. Little is known about his past, leading to one of the most enduring questions of the series: just whose side is he on, anyway? Headmaster Albus Dumbledore trusts him completely, as apparently does Lord Voldemort. But a man can't serve two masters, and Snape's true loyalty remains a secret only he truly knows the answer to.
