Dead of Night Egg
Canted up at a slight angle in its sandy bed, slightly separated from the others as if keeping its distance, this large egg gives off an almost palpable coolness. It is the colour of a moonless night at the hour of deepest stillness, when the world lies asleep under the dark sky and none but the most sinister of creatures are abroad. Every now and then, as shadows move across its surface and the light hits it from certain angles, it takes on the colour of crushed indigo velvet, its smooth curve variegated with lighter shades, as if the nap has been rubbed in several different directions. The next moment, however, a long cool blackness falls across it and the illusion of softness is gone.
Silvery False Dawn Egg
Standing alone on the eastern side of the mound, this egg is reminiscent of the time before the sun peaks above the mountains, when the sky lightens and pearls with grey and silver, fingering the dark shadows that night still casts in a last throw. The egg is slender, almost delicate, a faint hint of spring green at the bottom, a mountain meadow waking before the first true rays of sunlight break free.
Pearlescent Grey Daybreak Egg
At first glance, this average-sized egg seems utterly unassuming, but a few moments' study makes it subtle beauty clear. Its shell is completely smooth, and looks as if it would be soft to the touch, like finely-woven sisal cloth. The base tone of the egg is an even grey colour, which is lightly tinged with streaks of the very palest yellows imaginable, reminding you of the sky at that magical time when the dark of night is lightening into the first light of day.
Jubilant Dawnslight Egg
Flags of clear yellow and rose red radiate upwards from the base of the squat, roundish egg, almost dancing as the first flickers of sunlight in the pallid sky of morning. A faint hint of silver here and there towards the top is reminiscent of fading stars bowing their way into sleep. Nearby, two darker eggs huddle half burried in the sand.
Shimmering Dewdrop Egg
A tiny jewel goes almost unnoticed among the larger eggs surrounding it. Pale splashes of pastel colours, pink, yellow, blue, green and coral shimmer on the surface of this pearly white egg. The flaccid shell seems almost liquid, glistening in the dim lights of the hatching cavern. It rests lightly on top of the sand, hardly leaving a depression.
Sunrise Yellow Egg
Stripes of yellows, oranges and greys whorl across this egg, bringing to mind the image of the sky at sunrise, filled with the dawning promise of a new day. The shell of the egg is textured along the coloured stripes, further enhancing the illusion. The egg is quite large, and somewhat elongated, being slightly pointed at both ends.
Exuberant Early Morning Egg
Whipped frothy bits of white slither through the cerulean blue that enfolds the majority of the perfect ovoid. Slathers of green and brown seem to dance as firelizards would on a perfect morning breeze. Neither large, nor small, not round nor elongated, it basks in the heat of the sands.
Dusty Morning Rose Egg
Set off to the edge of the mound, this egg barely peeks through the sand. It is pale cream in colour, with a swirl of dusty rose, the exact colour of the sky just before the morning sun breaks over the bowl of the Weyr. Gazing at this lovely egg, you are convinced it must contain a pretty, petite green dragon, just waiting for her chance to make a grand entrance.
Delicate Grey Misty Morning Egg
This egg is a delicate grey colour, with subtle changes in the shade reminding you of the way mist hangs in the early morning. The egg seems darker at its base, the hues lightening towards the top of the egg and even seeming to be tinged with that golden yellow light you get just as the sun rises. A light dusting of sand covers the otherwise silky surface of the egg.
Cheery Morning Egg
The cheery yellow of this small egg brings a smile to your face. It's a clear, luminescent yellow that seems to shine with a gentle light, like the sun as it gathers strength throughout the morning. The texture of the egg is very smooth and shiny, you feel your hand would slide easily across it, were you to touch it.
Lazy Late Morning Egg
Soft blues, layering over each other in pastel shades, give way to the verdant greens and browns below. Swirls of black here and there dot the greens and browns, resembling supine figures at rest on a lazy late morning break. A smattering of pink and yellow flicks through the green, adding to the meadowlike atmosphere of this large egg.
Molten Rukbat Gold Egg
Like the sun at its zenith, this radiant beauty is a mass of molten gold, shimmering with a crown of incandescent yellowish-orange. Flecks of deeper, cooler reddish gold seem to float on the surface like flowers on a pool of liquid ore. The egg so carefully tended by Aurelinth is as perfect as the sun at high noon on a cloudless day. The ovoid has no dent or flaw, gently tapering like a candle flame that breaks the bleakness of the dark. It easily outshines the other eggs of the clutch, in size, richness of colour, and impressiveness, containing within it a cherished treasure.
Sun-Dappled Noonday Egg
This egg is lying on its side, gleeming brightly. Its main colour is a brilliant forest-green, and it is dappled by glowing, sun-bright yellow. If you cock your head to the side, it leaves you with the impression of resting in the shade of a large apple tree to take your noonday meal at Nabol, the hot sun streaming down through the leaves.
Winter Midday Egg
At first glance this egg seems to be pure unbroken white: so white and strikingly pure as to stand out pointedly among the other mottled and colourful eggs. There is however a soft, rolling texture to the white enhancing the bright appearance as the light in the cavern reflects off the surface of the egg almost blindingly.
Hazy Afternoon Egg
Swirling streams of shimmering greys mix with a hint of yellow on this egg's misty surface. The surface of the shell seems to have a rough texture to it, though perhaps this is but an illusion as light and dark patches flow together. The swirls follow no discernable pattern or form; however, darker patches throughout generate vague images of things as if hidden in the mists.
Sultry Summer Afternoon Egg
The outline of this smallish egg seems to waver when you try to look more closely at it, almost shimmering in the heat of the sands. From a distance it seems to be a mottled gray-brown in colour, but it's really speckled and streaked with every colour imaginable. Sunny yellow, clear sky blue, spring green, berry red - they all share space on the shell, creating the hazy effect of a sultry summer afternoon.
Drowsy Autumn Afternoon Egg
This egg seems to be pure blue from the distance, like that particular blue of the afternoon sky. Slight changes in colour, almost too faint to be seen, could pass as small wisps of clouds passing through the sky. This illusion is enhanced as the position of the clouds change as the egg is viewed from different angles. Overall, this egg reminds you of those shortening days of autumn when one takes time out to lie back and stare at the sky.
Sunlit Afternoon Egg
The small egg shimmers, clear, deep honey yellow flooding into warm peach and orange, the colours of the heat on a sultry afternoon. A wash of grey patterned over with fronds of silvery-olive green is like an echo of a garden wall, enclosing and shading a quiet spot for an indolent nap.
Fading Day Egg
The shell of this largish egg is a washed out, faded yellow, like the tiring sun as day dims into evening. Wispy streaks of grey and black wash over the yellow, enhancing the illusion. The egg seems to radiate an aura of calm serenity, and you wonder if that indicates anything about its occupant.
Somber Sunset Egg
The deep, rich colour of indigo, plum, and smoke grey swirl in placid eddies around the bulk of this medium sized egg. The layers of colours drift together, lying in shoals as banks of clouds do when the sun sets just before a summer storm. Small leavenings of rich tangerine and honey gold here and there flicker with the same intensity the last of the sun's light would display before melting into the dark.
Dusky Twilight Blue Egg
This egg seems overly large, but it may just be the effect of its colouring. Sitting lopsided on a small hill, it is a deep, dusky blue, deepening at the bottom to a tyrian-purple. It reminds you of the last Gather you attended at Tillek, when the cloudless sky just lost the last rays of sunlight over the ocean.
Haunting Nightfall Egg
As the shadows of evening wrap their robes of deeper colours around the world, the bright colours of day flee before them, leaving paler echoes of themselves behind. Sweet lavender, amythest, faded, dusky rose and hints of lemon yellow splash around the large egg. Fingers of black and smoke grey stretch upwards from the egg's base, branching into silhouettes of trees and foliage. The stillness of the egg adds to an appearance of hushed calm.
Glorious Twilight Egg
Brilliant yellows and oranges blaze across the surface of this huge egg, swirled through with fiery lines of deep red. The colours combine to recreate the scene of the sky at twilight, when the sun gives its last blaze of glory before setting for another day. The texture of the egg is as dramatic as its colour, marked with bumps and whorls along its surface.
Ominous Stormy Evening Egg
Right in the middle of the mound sits this large egg, looming over the others. Its colour varies from gray-blue to a deep purple, with swirls of darker gray brushing around it, like the front of a storm boiling over the mountain range at High Reaches on an early summer evening.
Celestial Lavender Egg
Swirled and streaked, this egg is a thousand times more vivid than the shining moons it so resembles; their colours dull and pale in comparison to those on its shell. Well-rounded and large, its silky surface is light grey suffused with a shadowy hint of lavender that flows over the grey. In places, a chaotic swirl of inky purple flows across the shell's surface, blending in with the lavender. Small dark patches of violet twist and eddy into wispy tendrils that sweep across the egg like swirling clouds blown by racing winds.
Starry Midnight Blue Egg
The dark, midnight blue of this egg is very nearly the same colour as a late winter evening, with Timor and Belior both gone from the sky. And, just like a chilly evening, as you concentrate on the egg for a short while, you can begin to make out small pinpoints of white across its surface, as if the stars themselves had fallen from the heavens onto it.
