One Colossal Egg

Dig, diggity, dig! That'd be Wrencath making a few new wallows for eggs, although Nabrimeth doesn't seem terribly pleased by any of them. But, when she feels the next egg coming on ... she just picks one of the prepared places at random and heaves an egg into it. While she lumbers off to find a more suitable spot for her next, the clutch papa is plenty happy to paw sand onto this latest one.

Deception plays a key element in this mid-sized egg as a myriad of bronze shades twine across its surface to exaggerate its length and elongate gentle curves building from a deep-hued base cradled within pale sands, to the near dazzling gleam of rich copper upon a peaked dome. Further play of light against so many highlights and lowlights lend the illusion of shadows and movement, and depth and definition where there is none. A series of razor-edged, fine lines streak across the left side while dark striations hint at Igen's windswept deserts or a tightly woven net in which a ruddy sphere is nestled.

Striations quickly spread across the bronze-shaded shell of the One Colossal Egg, like a sudden wind blowing through the desert night. The shell falls away, almost as one piece being peeled from the stone-colored dragon inside, knocked asunder by broad wings spreading wide to show off the green-hued patina coloring their underside.

Against the Ages Bronze

Chiseled planes of sunlit bronze trace the shape of this powerfully built dragon, as if hewn from a block of quartz infused sandstone. Large of frame and rippling with well-defined musculature, this fellow's solid stance on thick, sturdy limbs and squared shoulders give an impression of unassailable strength, like a fortress standing against the sands of time. His oblong head sports a long, aristocratic snout that hooks slightly to the right; prominent eye-ridges and a firm jaw prevent him from taking on a runneresque appearance. A milky jade patina crowns rounded headknobs and drizzles down the undersides of broad, wide wings perfectly proportioned to his frame and well able to carry this stalwart fighter up into the sky. Polished ebon talons that extend from broad paws, and striations of shimmering coppery threads along his tawny sides infuses a touch of elegance to his otherwise concrete appearance.

Temperament

Competitive, driven, and focused: that's your Nikoth. He wants to work hard and is not afraid of physical labor. A buff, well-muscled stature that's like the chiseled statues of ancient artists serves him well when used properly, but overextending will mean time in the infirmary. He'll be able to power through many activities on strength alone, but those requiring detailed attention will be harder for him and take longer to accomplish. He's strong-willed, though, and will keep trying until it works. That doesn't mean he's stubborn: if you insist that he take a break or try something a different way, he'll usually listen. On the flip side, if you become frustrated with how long it takes Nikoth to learn, his steadying presence will soothe your temper. Strong, steady and determined, Nikoth has staying power to see you and him through almost any storm, any changes that life brings your way.

As a weyrling, Nikoth will find flying to be easy and great big gouts of flame, useful for clearing foliage, will be his specialty when the young dragons tackle firestone and flaming. He's competitive and he won't hold back, sometimes trying too hard not only to do his personal best, but to outmatch his clutchmates. Exercises that require careful attention to details will be more difficult for him, because hed rather gloss over it and get going on reaching the goal. The steps in-between aren't as much of a concern for him unless he recognizes how they might affect the desired outcome. Hell have to work hard to master taking off and landing, smaller flames, and visualizing for travel Between. His weakness where visualization is concerned is one of lack of detail: for example, he might be able to generally envision the Bowl, seen from above and the time of day, but he might not be able to actually put the shadows in the right place, or color the stones the right way. In fact some of his images may turn out almost monochrome and lacking visual depth, strangely flat, like sketches of a place instead of an actual realization of the place and time. Nikoth will need to spend extra time running visual exercises and deepening his imagery before he's able to safely travel Between.

Once he's matured and learned that sometimes the details do matter, he'll be able to overcome these shortcomings somewhat, due largely to his steadfast nature and refusal to give up. That doesn't mean he'll be great at everything. He'll still have to concentrate to flame just so, and to jump between. Since Nikoth needs to concentrate so much harder on some things to be successful, he'll learn to enjoy taking the time to ponder and observe, turning things over in his mind before coming to any conclusions. This will also teach him to be a keen observer, though he'll still have a tendency to convert what he's deduced into broad brush-strokes instead of finely painted details. He shares your dry sense of humor, and those observations may turn into jokes or wry commentary on whatever facets of Weyr life hes observed today. « A'son, did you know that when you fly without safety straps, you can fall in the lake? I saw T'bry fall off of Menteth today. It's very lucky he was over the lake. »

Once he's done competing with his siblings, he'll move on to competing with others in the Weyr and outside. A penchant for occasional theatrics will provide amusement in flights, and sometimes get him in good with the ladies. Being competitive, he'll want to impress and do well, so he'll try anything. Though usually a thinker and a little slower to express himself than some, in flights Nikoth will display a surprising eloquence that isn't so much akin to 'flowery Harper talk' as it is a quiet way with words based on a straightforward style of complimenting. He's sincere in his remarks, not gilding any lilies, but has a knack for picking just the right words based on his observations of the lady of the hour. He may also strike poses, or perform aerial feats that are highly dramatic in nature, especially for a dragon of his size, alternately intending to impress, charm or amuse.

When there's a fall, Nikoth will be focused on one thing, and one thing only: ridding the skies of Thread. He thinks he can keep going and going because of his size. He's driven to it, expects of himself the ability to go until fall is over, and he'll be disappointed when he starts feeling the burn and has to take a break. You'll have to watch for that carefully, A'son, and make sure he doesn't cajole you into letting him go too far. He'll be best at tackling big clumps, given his penchant for large flames, and be good at following directions when it comes to being part of the Wing's formation. He's a team-player, as long as the team's goal is the same as his.

Life with Nikoth will present certain challenges: you'll need a big weyr and lots of time to oil him thoroughly due to his sheer physical size. His determination may sometimes lead to short-lived conflicts as he becomes obsessed with achieving whatever goal he's set for himself. He's always willing to listen to you, however. You are his rider and his strength and steadfast love will buoy you always. His faith in you and your abilities are unshakeable and he won't ever hesitate to back you up when the chips are down.

Public Impression Message

Sitting very still, the Against the Ages Bronze hatchling re-examines all of the Candidates once more, taking his time, head tilted slightly downward in the attitude of a deep thinker. Finally, he picks himself back up again and steers a steady course. Great paws leave wide prints in his wake, and there's a long line left by his tail as he moves toward a tall young man with dark eyes and shaggy brown hair.

Private Impression Message

At first you might not notice the presence in your mind, hovering just out of range, observing, taking the measure of you. As you become aware of it, it's not so much imagery or words, but a sense of a vast silence, like the calm before a storm over wide open plains, the heaviness of the air before the skies open up with all the force of nature. A loud *boom*, a rolling clap of vocal thunder, erupts in your head, filling your thoughts with a love so big it might just knock you back on your heels. « I am here A'son. I am with you. » And so he is, taking up all the spaces of your mind briefly as he noses this way and that curiously, opening himself up in turn for a single moment of perfect, overwhelming union. In all of that, a name chimes out, like the pattering of rain on a hide roof: « Nikoth. I am Nikoth. » Another vast silence ensues, though thrumming with possibilities until the bronze who has chosen you speaks again: « Where do we go next? My belly is very, very empty. »

Mindvoice

Finesse is really not Nikoth's forte in so many things, including his communication with you. He's either completely quiet or he's booming away like a message drum. At first there are very short, definitive statements, until he learns a little bit more through growth and experience. Over time he'll learn to temper his mindtouch, gentling his sendings, but he'll definitely read as 'loud' until the two of you sort things out. His range is everything in the percussion family, from the smallest tambor and set of bells up through fat copper drums meant to carry messages all across Pern.

Itchyspots

His big nose, the one that sticks out so far in front of his face, will be frequently itchy, making him want to rub it against anything rough. He'll try to ignore it so that he can keep doing what he's doing-need to fly further, can't let that brown beat me!-but after a while it will just become too strong to ignore. His headknobs, too, will need special attention, but no matter how much they're cleaned, oiled, and scratched, that green sheen won't seem to go away.

Limerick

From colossus, this bronze hewn in stone,

Determined to not be outshone.

He'll work hard to do well,

But may not excel,

When details are what must be known.

Dragon Inspirations

Nikoth ('Ni' as in knee, 'koth' as in coke) was inspired by ancient Greco-Roman statuary and the specific culture and archaeological artifacts of Cyprus. Cyprus has a long history of standing firm in the face of adversity; growing, changing and adapting over time through a shifting political and cultural landscape. Nikoth's appearance specifically hearkens back to statues found at archaeological digs and various buildings on Cyprus, such as the Kolossi Castle. His name is drawn from Nicosia, the capital city, and his personality is heavily inspired by the overall feel of ancient Cypriot culture while being tailored to fit with and compliment you.

Egg Inspiration: This egg was inspired by the Colossus of Rhodes. The statue of Colossus is also referred to as 'The Statue of Liberty'; notably not the US Statue of Liberty, but one dedicated to freedom and liberty. Of everything noted about Colossus, I think that was the most gripping and tangible. For more info.

Clutches

Nikoth has produced 1 gold, 2 bronze, 2 brown, 5 blue, and 5 green dragons.
