| Council Chambers, High Reaches Weyr At the heart of this oblong cavern is its meeting table: a long hardwood oval with a mirror's dark shine, High Reaches' sigil picked out in lapis and onyx at its center. Twenty chairs surround it, each softened by an embroidered cushion that's just a little too stiff for complete comfort -- meetings need to be kept short, after all -- with the chair at the table's head, facing the ledge, being somewhat larger than the rest. Interspersed between glowsconces upon the smooth walls, ancient tapestries depict the territories High Reaches protects in a particularly pastoral fashion, all fluffy clouds and fluffier llamas, or else fishing crafts sailing merrily out to sea. Among them is also a natural alcove, its several wooden shelves primarily stocking fine wines and liquors as well as the glasses to serve them, though the lower shelves also hold whatever hidework requires particularly frequent attention. A narrow wooden door leads to the Records room, while the tunnel that extends to the weyrleaders' ledge is wide enough for three men to walk abreast, with just enough kink in it to block the wind. It's common knowledge throughout the weyr that, at this time of the late afternoon, the Weyrleader can usually be found in the Council Chambers, catching up on paperwork and available for the hearing of requests and concerns. He's alone, for the moment, seated at the far end of the council table with a mug of klah to the left of him, and a spread of papers around him. Head lowered, K'del seems intent upon his reading, his lips pulled into an expression of thoughtfulness. The Weyrleader would not have to wait long before one of the riders walks in alongside the young man that happens to be Toleco. Looking somewhat ruffled, as one would after traveling, Toleco glances at the rider whom clears his throat, "Weyrleader, a visitor from High Reaches Hold... says he has a letter for you." Toleco walks forward to the table, pulling a letter from his coat pocket and slides it to K'del. The visitor waits then as he doesn't really have to introduce himself and that might actually be for the best. He doesn't know the Weyrleader after all even if the man looks no older than himself. Kids just barely grown up. K'del's gaze lifts as the two men enter, though he's silent until the letter reaches him, and he leans across to pick it up. "Thanks, Th'nal, I'll take it from here," he tells the rider, with a forward inclination of his head; having dismissed the rider, he turns his attention back towards Toleco. "Should I read this, first," he wonders, out loud, persumably intending the letter, "Or just ask you what it contains, I wonder. Do you know? Got to be important, if it wasn't just entrusted to Th'nal." Toleco nods to K'del, "Not as important as you might think. It's just about me is all... Th'nal was incorrect about that I'm a visitor." He looks at the letter and says, "I'm not sure what exactly the Holder wrote, but I'll be truthful with you. I used to be a Guard there in High Reaches Hold, except I'm not the sort to just let a criminal have their run of the land. Most guards don't care to pursue someone outside of the Hold. I did and was quite good at it... till this last hunt... the guy I was after got desperate, took a girl hostage, and then killed her. Trying to save her life, he got away. Hold couldn't keep me around after that. Family would have had my blood, so they figured if danger was what I was after or wanted, High Reaches Weyr could use me far better than they could. They told me about it and I accepted to come here... and here I am." He shifts after finishing that little tale and takes a breath. It's a long explanation, and K'del is silent, expression impassive, throughout the entirety of it. "And Lord Rynien knows I owe him," he murmurs, finally, maybe more to himself than to Toleco. "Take a seat?" Without waiting for an answer, he continues, turning the letter over in his hands, "He's only sort of right, though, that we can use you better. Which is to say... We don't /have/ a Guard. That's what riders do." But he looks - and sounds - more musing than dismissive, his upper teeth dropping to dig just lightly into his lower lip. Toleco pulls out a chair when offered, settling himself after gathering his cloak out of the way. When no guard is mentioned, the former guardsman nods and says, "I had wondered about that. I figured riders were responsible for the security of the Weyr as much as they are for the skies when Threadfall comes." He leans forward onto a knee and remarks, "So I guess that leaves us with the question of what do we do with me? To follow my former career here, I'd have to become a rider... although my father said the chances of that are slim to none." He looks to K'del and says, "I don't mind putting in the hard work to pick up another trade if necessary, I just don't like the thought of my skills going to waste." An actual smile crosses K'del's face. Cheerfully, "And neither do I. Shells - it'd be an awful waste. No." He lifts a finger to tap at his lips thoughtfully, and then, after a moment of thought, drops it again, leaning forward. "Reckon you could teach? Tracking skills-- that's something we /don't/ really teach, but seems like it'd be useful for some of what we do. Could even help us out as we needed it. Not full time, I guess, but we could get you doing something else, the rest of the time." He seems quite pleased with the whole idea. Toleco considers the idea for a moment and says, "That I can do. I know the area around High Reaches a little. And yeah, knowing what and where something or someone is going out in the wild is always useful. Even lets you know whats running around that might be bad for you. But this is a good start till we can think of something more permanent." He sits forward and then grins, extending a hand to K'del, "Sorry, forgot to introduce myself earlier, Toleco is my name." A rueful, almost embarrassed laugh sounds as K'del stretches out to shake Toleco's offered hand. "And I didn't ask; rude of me. Nice to meet you, Toleco. I'm K'del." Which is obvious, perhaps, but polite! "Reckon it ought to work well. How about... up for being a bouncer in the bar, maybe? Break up the occasional fight, that kind of thing? We're mostly relatively well-behaved, but there are occasions..." Beat. "Maybe, in time, we can work out something more permanent, more interesting, to make use of your skills. Hope so." Toleco chuckles and says, "Nice to meet you too, K'del." And then he drops the question about bouncership. "Not at all a problem. I don't drink much myself, but I know how folks get when their emotions are running high and they're drunk." Beat. "Or a quarrel of love is in the mix." He shrugs and says, "Prehaps something in time. I think I might like being here... of course I've never been around dragons, so we'll have to see. Where abouts would I be living here? Didn't get a tour on the way in." "Too many bored riders, too much alcohol-- exactly." K'del seems not too worried about this, the little shifting of his shoulders suggesting something along the lines of 'well, people will be people'. "Hope you do like it here. Bit of an adjustment, but... you do get used to it. I did, anyway. Lots of other people, too. You'll be in the dorms." He considers for a moment, then draws himself towards his feet. "Come on - I'll take you to see one of the Assistant Headwomen. They'll find you a bed in one of the dorms, get you all set up." Toleco chuckles and nods to that, "Exactly. But maybe finding themselves outside for the night tied up might convince them to lay off the drink a little if they have too much." He gestures to the two rope loops at his belt. "Always be prepared." His motto prehaps? But he comes to his feet as well, pushing the chair back in where it was originally and he follows K'del. "Oh yeah, I hear tell that you got some former criminals up here helping out... I just hope it's no one I put in the cells." "Shells," is K'del's assessment of this particular form of punishment. "Hope not in the middle of winter." If he sounds a little dubious, he doesn't sound outright concerned about the idea, instead continuing to add, "There's a thought. Not used to thinking like that. Well - hopefully, they'll all be going home in the next couple of months. Work's nearly finished, finally. It's about time: a turn and a half of criminals hanging around, well, that's probably way too long." Toleco smiles and says, "Don't worry Weyrleader, I keep a eye on anyone I have tied up, especially in these parts. Just want them to learn a lesson, not really hurt them. My job to catch them and then keep them safe until either they're sober or the law deals with them. Most don't realize that. I don't do it to be cruel or because I enjoy it, it's because it's right." He however, nods in agreement when K'del mentions how long the criminals have been hanging around. "Yeah, thats too long and I dunno how much run of the Weyr they've had, but it might do everyone a bit of good once they're sent home. Of course I don't know how they've behaved so I really shouldn't pass judgement. Not my place to." With a bob of the head, K'del says, "I trust you." He seems satisfied, too. Of the convicts; "They've been pretty well secured, but..." Perhaps it's better that he /doesn't/ mention the fact that two of them Impressed in the last clutch, though no doubt that will come out in time. "Now-- this way." And off they go, to deposit Toleco with an Assistant Headwoman, who will be most happy to show him the ropes. |
