| It was dark out by the time Milani came out of the caverns and sat on a bench outside the Snowasis wrapped up in a quilt. The bar was quiet, though glows were unlidded within. She sat and leaned her head against the wall just outside, looking up at Nikoth's ledge and sighed. Dual pairs of eyes gleamed in the darkness, two shadowy dragon-shapes. He had company. Her eyes squeezed shut and she pulled the quilt around her more tightly to stave off the ache that was slowly growing in her chest. It had been a long day of tears, putting old resentments behind and steering things as much as she was able to make sure that everything still went smoothly at the Weyr. Now, finally, after nightfall, she could let some of her own feelings surge to the fore. She felt small and scared after reading Satiet's letter. She didn't want to be alone, yet here she was sitting out under the stars by herself instead of up where she wanted to be the most. She tucked the quilt around herself more tightly and let her gaze drift up past his ledge to another one, dark, and then past that one to the sky itself. Milani was so tired, she didn't even realize when she slipped away into sleep. |
