>---< Kitchen, High Reaches Weyr(#267RJs) >----------------------------------<
Polished marble and granite surfaces, gleaming metalwork and pale woods
characterize the vaulted fastness of the kitchen. Several large hearths
gape red-mouthed against the outer wall of the cavern, their fires almost
always stoked for the constant cooking the Weyr requires to feed its
denizens. Sinks line the wall to one side of the hearths, providing ample
space to wash large quantities of dishes, while to the other, cabinetry
and a deep pantry provide storage space for items commonly needed on a
day-to-day basis.
The remaining wall space is taken up by passageways and extra seating:
swinging doors that lead variously to the main living cavern, the inner
caverns and the storage rooms, a counter-height pass-through for food
service to the Snowasis, and a series of nooks equipped with tables and
benches for quick, out-of-the-way meals any time of day.

>-------------------------------------< 9D 10M 38T I10, autumn afternoon >---< Aiden is currently at a workstation at the far end of the kitchen, concentrating on a slate. He has a piece of chalk in one hand, that he is absently tapping on the slate in no pattern whatsoever. Before him there are several ingredients spread out in front of him. He doesn't look like he's actually been here long - his apron is still lying on the counter, clean and unused. Harilan is a pretty familiar face in the kitchens since his arrival. And the kitchens have no doubt added to the bit of youthful Pudge the beastcrafter has accumulated about his middle and other parts. He's grabbing a bowl of something savory smelling and stealing a seat trying to warm his hands. "You kinda forget when you haven't lived here in a while, just how damn cold this place gets." Aiden looks up at the voice and smiles. "I haven't actually lived here long, I didn't come to the Weyr all that long ago." He picks up the apron and ties it around his waist, though he doesn't yet put the top over his head. "Have you been apprenticed here long? My name is Aiden. It's nice to meet you." He looks for something on the counter, eyes darting from one item to the next before he goes to a shelf to bring a bag of something back. "I was just going to try my hand at bubblies. I usually didn't get to help with those back home. Mostly just stews and breads and such." "Lucky you." Is Harilan's flat reply, peeking over at whatever it is the younger boy is doing. "Grew up here, but I just was assigned here more recently. Bubblies, sounds legit." He notes spooning food into his mouth like an inmate who'd not had a decent meal in weeks. "Where you hail from, originally?" The older male then wonders between bites. Aiden answers, "Balen Hold. I don't suppose you've ever been there." He puts the top of the apron over his head and reads over the slate again, making a note with the chalk in his hand. "Is it nice being back home? I've always lived at the Hold before this, but I wanted to start in the craft someplace new. And this is where they put me." While they're talking, Aiden starts putting some of the ingredients into a bowl, checking the slate from time to time. "Can't say I have." Of the hold, and between bites there is a noncommittal shrug from the dark skinned man. "It's alright I guess, I mean, kind of a bitch since we can't stand for the clutch now." We, meaning the beast craft apprentices. "I guess there's worse places to be, wouldn't really know though." Watching the cooking process with growing interest. "You hold bred then? I mean originally?" Aiden looks up at Harilan from the bowl, which he has started to stir. "I had heard that about the Beastcraft. The Bakercraft hasn't done anything like that, though of course the fact that one craft has done it makes anybody talk about if they think it'll happen with theirs." He shrugs. "I'm fine being a Baker myself, or I wouldn't have joined. But I like that my craft hasn't been restricted like that. After all, it's not an insult to the craft if you get searched, like you don't like being part of the craft or something. Just seems that if someone is searched, there may be a very good reason for it." "Well, there's a precedent now isn't there. Not like the weyrs need all that many candidates. In interval I suppose." Getting up to refill the bowl. "Who knows, my uncle has this saying, dragons will choose whom they will, regardless of what we humans have to say on the subject." There's a shoulder lift. "Good though that you are happy in your craft." Aiden seems to be done stirring the batter, which he puts aside for the moment. He nods at Harilan. "Good saying. So I wonder what the Weyr will do if one of the dragons want someone in the Beastcraft? Good relations are important too." He starts to make the filling for the bubblies in a different bowl. "I found that baking and cooking evened people out. I might not have been very athletic, and was often picked last for teams, but I could beat them all at a herdbeast stew. All that stuff outside the kitchen stays outside the kitchen when I'm making something." "I doubt they can pay the restitution to the craft, I mean shit, I've had seven or more years of food, board, and tuition." He waves a hand,"I mean someone's got to figure something out. Maybe they will, maybe they won't pick anybody." he lifts a shoulder, "Good to have something you love doing." Aiden frowns. "But what if someone leaves the craft? Do they have to pay all that back too? Or if you do something wrong and get kicked out? I guess I didn't ask because I didn't intend to get kicked out." He pulls over a bubbly pan and pours the batter in, then the filling, and then more batter into each indentation in the pan. "Are you specializing in something at the Beastcraft? What about it do you like doing? Do they count all the work you've done over the years against all those costs? Seems like they should." "No specialty yet, I should be chosing one by the end of the turn." He frowns at the last, "It is an ugly situation, certainly." For the rest he shrugs, "Dunno, Master Hanson made her decree and the rest of us are trying to figure out what that means, and all because some chick made a big todo about leaving and staying on at the weyr to stand." Irritability thy name is Harilan. Aiden hmms as he finishes pouring the batter and filling into the bubbly pan. "Maybe it'll all work out in the end." He is young after all. "I guess we'll have to see what happens. Maybe the other crafts will wait to see what happens with the Beastcraft before following suit." He the bowl over to Harilan, it has the remnants of dough in it. "Would you like what's left?" Harilan eyes the bowl. "Sure." Not one to turn down free food. "So what about you, dreaming of becoming the next F'lar of pern or are your dreams a little more ground bound?" Aiden thinks about that a moment and shrugs. "I haven't really thought too far ahead. I guess right now I'm thinking about my immediate future, which is to learn how to make more things, find people to enjoy them, and then learn how to do more things." He lifts up the tray and takes it to the one of the ovens. When he's done setting it, he comes back to the counter and starts cleaning up. "I guess that's not too imaginative, but I'm just taking it a step at a time." Harilan picks at the bowl, greedily gobbling up the leftovers. before grinning. "I got chores but, thanks for the leftovers and keep taking it one step at a time." He grins, "And I might stop by to try one of those bubblies. Aiden nods with a grin. "It would be great if you could try them and tell me what you think. It was nice meeting you." |
