Who: Bria, E'ten, Elise, Oreithiya, Razi, Reesa, Wyriker
Involves: Fort Weyr
Type: Log
What: On the first day of the camp out, Reesa and E'ten set a task for the candidates - to build their own shelter.
Where: Southern Continent
When: Day 22, Month 13, Turn 31 (Interval 10)
While it may be winter - and freezing - at Fort, the difference after between is rather startling. The Southern air is humid enough that it could be unpleasant rather than relief, especially when bundled into clothing suitable for between. One by one, the dragons circle down and deposit their passengers on the ridgeline where the group is planning to make its camp for the next near-seven. The candidates are immediately herded into unpacking duty, and it's not until the kitchen staff are satisfied with their makeshift setup that the group is told to gather off to the south side, where Reesa, Mirabell, and E'ten are are waiting for them next to piles of equipment. Southern! Oreithiya's arrival here has finally come though not quite as she expected. As she slips free of the dragons and helps with the unpacking duty. Finally, brushing her hands along her backside, she turns and walks in the direction of the group, to stand and wait off to the south side. A smile, a nod here and there, the beastcraft candidate is otherwise pretty quiet at the moment. Maaaaaybe trying to sneak looks off and around the surrounding area; Southern! Once they've landed and Elise has dismounted (it isn't her /first/ dragonride, but she's still really awkward about it), her first instinct is to begin shedding clothes. Her jacket comes first obviously, and she works on rolling up her pantlegs and pushing her sleeves up to her elbows. Her long hair she sweeps up into a loose bun atop her head, and she's kind of panting after their work unpacking everything. Her face is shiny with sweat, and she's only just then catching her breath when she comes to a stop over there, where Reesa and Co. wait. Razi's not overly enamoured of the change in weather, rather quick to dump his extra heavy clothing on arrival - it doesn't take him all that long to adjust. While there's a sheen of sweat on his forehead, he seems otherwise comfortable with the humidity, sleeves pushed up as he slouches a few steps behind Elise. Being on a dragon is one thing. No doubt Bria will be gushing about that for the next few days alone. But then there's being somewhere warmer, a little tiny bit more like home, that really brightens the already too chipper creature that is Bria. "This is going to be amazing, I just know it. Do you think we'll be able to sing songs around a fire? Or tell scary stories?" Who she's talking to is anyone's guess. One of the first things that Adaluth deems necessary after offloading the necessary travel equipment is - water! Enough so that there's not so much a good bye before the bronze takes off for the water. They're not going anywhere anyways. And it's warmer than Fort. What it does is leave a very amused E'ten to make his way next to the equipment once it's been settled accordingly into the pile. Only then does he make his way to the other side with the women who stand here. As the candidates start to gather, Reesa clears her throat. /She's/ wearing one of her summer dresses - perfectly appropriate for this weather - unlike Fort, even though she still insists on wearing them. "If none of you have ever been here, well - Ali gave me a long list of warnings I'm supposed to give you." She's looking at the hide that's settled atop one of those piles of equipment. "But that's pretty boring stuff. Just stick with a rider, or near the camp, and you won't die," she says, blandly, looking at E'ten like he might want to add something more useful to that. With a purse of lips, the greenrider adds: "You'll be here for a while, so you're going to have to set up your own shelter." And here is where she nods to the piles of stuff - equipment that, with the right hands, could provide a dry overhang, or even a tidy little shelter. The right hands. Elise looks from Reesa to the stuff she's standing next to, which at first was just a bunch of piles of stuff, but now has suddenly materialized and taken form as individual pieces of useful things. She stares at that stuff, then twists her lips. Somebody's shelter is going to be sad. "It /is/," Oreithiya comments to Bria, an expression of excitement touching upon her features. In preparation of this trip, her attire is layered, affording her the ability to shed some in deference to the heat of tropical Southern. Her first Candidate trip out here is a distant memory. As Reesa points out the materials to make their own shelter, Oreithiya's gaze is dubious, but, not /too/ concerned. Was she able to bring her archery stuff? Because if so, she'd've brought it! Razi starts to open his mouth, stops, and looks at the pile of stuff. "We're meant to do that? Surely there's someone to do it for us?" the former baker mutters, from the safety of somewhere behind Elise. Bria's comment, however, actually makes him brighten and look in Bria's direction, straightening momentarily, "Yes! Scary stories, I like that. Do /you/ know how to build a fire?" OMFG YAY. That's the look on Wyriker's face as he goes BOUNDING over to where the women stand, starting to sort his way through the camping supplies like some squirrel in nut heaven. What is that you say? Camping isn't fun? Man, camping Fort-Weyr style is TOTALLY better than /life/ at Red Rock. But hey, don't tell his dad that, right? He offers Elise a crooked smile, even though there's an element of selfconscious reserve. "Do *I*? Well, no. But I'm sure someone here will know how." There's a brief lash-flutter in E'ten's general direction. Of course if anyone knows how to do anything, Bria will assume that it's him. But then a thought occurs to her and she glances from piles to people of authority. "Do you all have to build our own? I mean, if we share shelter, we could help each other, right?" "Be careful in what you eat, unless you're absolutely sure and if you feel ill? /Immediately/ tell one of us." It's something that E'ten thinks to include before reaching for that aforementioned looked at hide with one hand. "I'll post the list of information for any of you who wish to read the list of hazards," he says with a voice that almost suggests that it might be more than useful." Weapons? Well, he brought his own. It's not in the candidate stack of gear though. It's in the other area where those riders and chaperones are going to be setting up camp. Once they do start talking amongst themselves, he hazards a glance towards Reesa. He did have something more to add. And even more as he looks to Bria with a flourished wave towards the equipment. "You can work together as a group of candidates. Talk and work amongst yourselves. Maybe there's a master campsetter amongst you." Well, Elise is looking a little crestfallen that is until Wyriker starts rifling through the supplies. She lifts her eyebrows when he smiles at her and then steps forward, as if maybe taking some courage from his enthusiasm. She bends down to pick up this and that thing, holds them awkwardly, and shows them to him without words. Is this good stuff? She looks over at Razi and shrugs, then at Bria and that's what she alights on. "Oh, /can/ we help each other?" E'ten's affirmation delights her and she looks to Wyriker again. "Do you know how to do this?" "You can do whatever you want with it. You could do nothing and sleep on the rocky ground, for all I ca-" Reesa's distracted peering at E'ten, so perhaps thankfully doesn't finish that sentence. He's responsible enough to share the information, and she listens with crossed arms and a briefly bored expression that's probably not entirely put on. "Yes, /we're/ not doing it for you," the greenrider says, firmly. "You can sleep together under one big happy roof, as long as you don't /sleep/ together." There's a smirk from Razi as he edges up to nudge Bria with an elbow, muttering at the Blood: "Obvious much?" he drawls in his Bollian accent: "Maybe you should see if you can slip into /his/ shelter." This is far more interesting than building things! "Under all one roof?" Questions Oreithiya, sneaking looks to both Reesa and E'ten before turning to her fellow Candidates. Brows raise as Elise turns on Wyriker, the girl's indulgence smile brief before Razi gains her attention. Mostly because he's talking to Bria. "Or maybe we can do individual ones." Obviously, her preference. Bria's big eyes snap over to Razi and it's probably not just the heat that has her cheeks flushed pink. "You're horrible. That's not-- I didn't say anything like that." She looks like she wants to say more. When doesn't she? But for now she doesn't seem sure what it should be. And that doesn't happen quite as often. Wyriker has a quick grin again for Elise, but his eyes draw to Rei naturally; before Bria attracts the niece of Ruatha, he confirms her taste in equipment with a quick thumb's up. "Looks good." There's only a happy grin before he's meandering towards the teeny-beastcrafter, like drawn to like. "Are we doing a big-- joint one?" He unconsciously echoes her question, wrinkling his nose in consternation. "You didn't /say/ it," Razi agrees with Bria, with one of those super annoying, knowing grins. "I wouldn't know the first thing about roughing it," the candidate is quick to admit Oreithiya, and just as quick to point out, with a finger directed Wyriker-wards, "He seems to know how to, though." Louder, now, pointedly: "So maybe it's best if we all do one together." Good. For all that E'ten might have said something at Reesa, the cut short statement is satisfaction enough with just a 'look' towards the greenrider. One that's shot briefly at the young woman before catching the comments from the more interested, hesitant candidates considering living arrangements. "You can sleep all in one arrangement or in whatever manner you want. Individual space for sleeping. It's entirely up to you, but as long as it's your fellow candidate. Consider this bonding time and something of a break from chores, if you want. But just because we're here and not at the Weyr, it doesn't mean you can't get in trouble," he says, taking the hide with him along with some tools plucked away from the pile to go pin the hide into a nearby tree. No need for one set of eyes, ears to be listening - obviously. When Wyriker, her only hope!, wanders off, Elise frowns. Then sets her jaw. "Well making individual shelters is all well and good for the people who know how," she says, a little disappointed. She turns to Bria and Razi with the things she's pulled loose - what /are/ they? - and shrugs. "We could the three of us make one?" she suggests, but then instead of waiting kind of wanders off to a space nearby but far enough that she'll have room, to set those tools down. She goes back for more, some canvas and things. E'ten's look earns a roll of Reesa's eyes skywards, but at least she doesn't continue on that vein. "Tomorrow we'll start to explore the area around here and get familiar with the local wildlife, and get in some practice with the weapons, and probably the day after, we'll get to hunt." The greenrider looks excited the most about that, rocking up onto her toes, eyes bright. "But in the meantime - get your shelter set up for tonight." There's a huff from Bria in Razi's general direction, though her gaze does briefly seek out E'ten again before she's glancing over to what Wyriker is doing. Finally she settles her full attention on Elise. "The three of us? I'm not sure sharing anything with Razi is a great idea. His head only ever seems to be on one thing." Him and every other teenaged boy ever, maybe, but he's the only one that Elise is suggesting they share with. Bria seems perfectly content with the idea of sharing with the other Blooded, however. "I hope not," Oreithiya states up to Wyriker, "I'd prefer to have a little lean-to..." She nibbles her lip, glancing at Razi when he mentions not knowing the least bit about roughing it. "Honestly, unless people mind sleeping under the stars," now her voice gains confidence, "I don't think we honestly need /much/. It's not like they," E'ten and Reesa are glanced at, smiled at, "will let us get eaten. It'd be fun to roast things by the fire and go to sleep in a --" She peers at the pile, "-- are there sleeping blankets in there?" Much better than spending all this energy on a sophisticated shelter! Lean-to! It might be a cover up for not knowing exactly /how/ to build a bigger shelter. "/I/ wouldn't mind," Razi's more-than-quick to agree to Elise's suggestion, with a knowing sort of grin, and at Bria's contribution, makes a face. "What if I /promise/ to behave?" Let's face it, he doesn't sound all that convincing. Wyriker is more than happy to let Rei take lead, shifting a grin back to Elise and Bria; he totally missed that frown. He's patiently waiting in that teenaged-boy uncertainty manner: someone tell him what to doooooo~ "Oh," Elise says, about Razi, to Bria. She turns from her little pile of supplies to look from one to the other. Right. "Yes, I didn't think of that." For some reason. When Oreithiya makes her new suggestion, sleeping under the stars~, she latches onto that instead and says, "Yes!" And abandons the little pile for the big pile, to start grabbing rolls of bedding. "Unless it rains," she singsongs, hair coming loose to float around her face. Alright. E'ten can't discount the prospect of hunting being more appealing than the present. But there are things to be done. Hide nailed into the tree. Camp to be made. Close enough to assist the candidates but enough space so that he can at least ignore and never hear the juicy gossip that abounds. He does think to ask with a look over one shoulder at Reesa, "Where are you setting up camp?" Bria glances up at the sky where the stars will be later, then over at Elise who seems to have taken to the idea of sleeping under them. It shifts to Razi, dubious, then she just settles down like she's given up on having any help to build a proper shelter. Smoothing down her dress, Reesa smiles at E'ten's question. "Khiabeth says she's found a nice spot with some greenery we can use for a makeshift bed. We don't mind sleeping out under the stars- we /like/ it." The blonde peers in the candidates' direction, then to E'ten, rather loudly: "They're kind of hopeless, aren't they?" When Elise latches onto her suggestion, Oreithiya's face brightens. "Yes. It'll be pretty." Even if it rains. "We can get some of those... things and put big leafy leaves on top to keep the rain out." Or something. The girl knows animals, not shelter. Seeing Bria giving up, however, she offers hesitantly, "Or we could go with something more proper." The interplay between Reesa and E'ten is barely noticed as the focus is on what they're gonna do for shelter. "What /if/ it rains?" Razi picks up on that. "We could at least find like a- a tree or something to drape the material over as a shelter, or..?" Where /is/ Wyriker when you need someone who knows what they're doing? Coming back with two bedrolls, one for her and one for Bria apparently since she gives the second over to the other candidate, or just drops it down next to her. "Come on, it'll be fun," Elise says, which is really unlike her, but is kind of like /Bria/, and maybe that's the point. "Who knows how to make fire?" she asks. All this back and forth, she's had enough. "It won't rain," she tells Razi, like she could possibly know that for certain. E'ten could almost be seen counting to ten as he just regards Reesa as if she went Between without something vital. Just 'what' remains left to be seen and determined. "Isn't that going to be uncomfortable to sleep in," the bronzerider asks with a gesture to the other's dress. He can't help the momentary retort, knowing he traveled in flight gear - minus the jacket presently. It also prevents him from doing a repeat of that 'look' which nearly turned into a near-glare as a result of accessing of the candidates. "Don't tell me that you were always perfect at your camping skills, Ree." While the other candidates start questioning the sleeping without shelter thing, Bria seems to relax into something more like herself when Elise drops a bedroll near her. She practically beams at the other girl, reaching out for the bedroll and drawing it closer to her. "I bet Razi can figure it out. Or maybe E'ten would be nice enough to show us how so we can all learn." "This?" Reesa brushes the hem of her dress. "Oh, no, I don't sleep in clothes," she says with a perfectly straight expression. Maybe she's just trying to wind E'ten up, maybe not. "Maybe you should help them," she suggests, though without any real emphasis. "I should go help Mirabell." Now that, /is/ just an excuse, as she stalks off to find the other greenrider. "Hey, where's mine?" Razi asks, a little grouchily, but at least he knows where to go now - he walks past Elise to where she collected it from, pausing halfway to look back at the girls. "Hey, I know how to make a fire," in a defensive tone that suggests maybe he's not all that sure, after all. "But we need to collect something to burn for that." "So... shelter." Oreithiya frowns, thoughtful, before getting her own bedroll/bedding situated. At this point, she'll help whatever's decided on for their shelter. Although if they do a lean-to, this girl's definitely itching to go off into the jungles (where they're allowed) to get some of those big, leafy jungle leafs! "We didn't get any mercy as candidates," E'ten remarks to Reesa's retreating back, the comment about what is and is not sleeping attire left purposely untouched. Any sort of response is only potential fodder - so he refrains. But he just might make himself scarce in visual sight as he listens. Just in case they need him or there's an impromptu bug attack that gets out of hand. Who knows? Surely Oreithiya will get the chance to wander off for leafy things, and Elise helps with the other candidates in getting all the appropriate bedding materials, lean-to materials, and whatever else for fires and sleeping and fun times. When all's said and done, they have a nice little lean-to situated with lots of leafy overhangs in case it does rain and to protect them from the sun too! And they can each have their own little sections for sleeping /individually/. It's like /magic/.
