| Writing formal letters was... let's face it, formal writing had been the most difficult part of her apprenticeship, the whole way down. Give her a map, and she'd be fine. A verbal assessment? No problem! But writing things down? That was hard. Okay, maybe that wasn't quite fair. There was that time she'd rambled for three quarters of an hour over the changes in coastline along Benden... but it had been so interesting, and she'd known so much more than what the assessment had required, and... well, it had come out all right in the end, mostly. She'd gotten better at a lot of that, but still. Letters, not so much. And this one... it wasn't as if she especially knew her Craftmasters, but it seemed important to go straight to the top. One thing she did know about Weyrs was that eggs didn't just wait for someone to sort things out; if she was going to be permitted to do this, in whatever form, there was a time limit. Granted, she wasn't wholly sure that she wanted to, except... except. The first three attempts ended up scraped clean and abandoned. No, no, definitely no. The fourth was... serviceable? Maybe? She reread it. It could be better, but she just... didn't know how to make it better. Perhaps she'd be better off just being herself-- just acknowledging that this, run-on sentences and all, was just how she was. Maybe they wouldn't mind. Attn: Craftmaster Rivechi and Craftsecond Aramio
Dear sirs, I write to you with regards to a proposal that has been offered to me, one that I think-- though I am not sure!-- could be beneficial to our Craft. As you know, I have been working with the SeaCraft for several turns now, and have made slow, but solid progress on my work remapping the Tillekian coastline. It has been suggested to me that a combined venture between our craft and the Weyr might be fruitful; that with their superior transport, we might more effectively conduct our work. I enclose a copy of my most recent work, completed within a very short space of time on dragon-back. With practice, I think I could get even quicker, and the accuracy is absolutely better from above. Further to that, a dragonrider from High Reaches has offered me two possibilities: the opportunity to Stand for the eggs presently upon their sands, with the end result of continuing my work, but from within (perhaps there might be some licensing agreement to my maps-- certainly they would be made available to the Hall!), were I to Impress. Please understand that it is not my wish to throw away my training and vocation for something new; I'm not so fickle! My ultimate desire is to make maps, and I feel that this opportunity could be of benefit to everyone. If this is not something you would be willing to support, I will understand wholeheartedly. In that eventuality, however, I would still like to present the possibility of my being posted to High Reaches Weyr in the new turn, so that we might negotiate some formal venture to facilitate my work. I do not seek to tell you what to do, sirs; I am a Starsmith, and accordingly, I will go where I am sent and without complaint. I can only present to you what has been suggested to me, and leave it up to your greater knowledge and understanding to make a decision, whether it be one, the other, or neither at all. Sincerely, Pia Journeyman Starsmith (Cartography) |

Faryn should have included that in her letter to the hall. That would have helped, certainly. It would have been a lie, but it would have helped.
Also, I love Pia.
