| There's really no reason for Faryn to be this side of the weyr, not that she needs any particular reason. She's not got any weyrbrats tailing her, no hides in hand to warrant a beeline for the Headwoman's office, and certainly doesn't seem to have been demoted. She seems, in fact, to have a particular goal in mind when she wanders into the caverns, and she's skimming the faces of the few people in the area, coming and going but few settled to stay. When she doesn't see it, whatever it is, she stops and sighs, but waits, just a second extra. A group of girls occupy the corner of the common room, chitchatting in loud voices that ultimately dissolve into giggles. They seem to be having a good time of it. Over there, just beyond them, there's Farideh, bent over, chasing something close to the ground. It's a black feline, who runs along the wall, evading her owner's outstretched fingers. "Lady," strident, "Annoying, you stop right this instant." Said cat doesn't understand that, probably, but with a mewl, comes up against the nearest chair, rubbing against it; that gives Farideh an opportunity to scoop her up and cuddle the feline close to her face. "Naughty kitty. Don't run away ever." She's about to turn out and leave when she hears Farideh's voice, scolding...what? She steps further in, slipping her hands in her pockets and making her way towards that corner just in time to see the laundress - candidate? - come up with a feline held close. Just when Faryn thinks she's got a grasp on things, she comes across things like that. "You have a cat," is apparently meant to serve as a greeting, when she stops to peer not at Farideh but the cat, tilting her head sideways. "She's trying to catch a mouse, maybe," is offered, since a feline without a job is unheard of for her, but she bulldozes past that with, "Do you have a minute?" Full blown feline cuddles are in process, but Faryn's voice brings Farideh's eyes up from the silky black fur. "Me? Yes. Tomic found them months ago. This is Lady--" She clamps down on her tongue before she says the rest, and wrinkles her nose. "She doesn't catch mice. That's disgusting. No, she just pitters about and sleeps all day. It's why she's so pudgy," she says, squeezing the cat, and talking in a baby voice, best reserved for-- no one. Seriousness returns, and she nods her head at Faryn, bending to set the feline back down on her own four paws. "Sure. What's the matter?" The expression Faryn turns on the cat is a bit horrified, but she refrains from further comment as it's placed on the ground. Her gaze cuts from the cat to the girls nearby, and she makes a move away from them even though it's unlikely they're listening at all. Instead, she starts for the vacant table, saying on the way, "I see you got Searched. You asked, I assume?" It isn't some sort of back-handed compliment, even though it might sound like one. She pulls out a chair, sits in it, props her chin in her hands. Lady Annoying runs away at high speed, tail in the air; indignant. "Yeah," Farideh says warily, "I asked Quinlys. Why?" She follows to the table at a sedate pace, and stares at the first available chair like there might be a trap waiting for her when she sits. "Are you?" as she pulls out said chair and sits down, folding her arms defensively over her chest. Again, Faryn's not quick to answer. She does watch that poor cat, thoughtful to its predicament, but is largely silent until she realizes that the laundress is apparently defensive. "Don't get pissy," she says at once, "this isn't. I didn't mean anything by it. I just wanted to check, not that it makes a difference." The cat's gone now, so she turns back. "Why? Did you want to Stand, that is." "I'm not pissy. That's offensive." Farideh's arms tighten and her brows come together to denote her annoyance with being called such a word. "Why?" She sounds startled, this time around, and her frown eases somewhat, her forehead smoothing. "I guess I just-- wanted to make my own decisions. I want to try for-- a different life. If it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen, but there's no harm in giving it a whirl at least once. It's not like I want to folding laundry for turns and turns." "Well, then, don't think that everything is trying to judge you," Faryn says, quickly short tempered. She catches herself before she tirades, barely, but her frown is firm. "That's it. Really? And if you don't Impress? What then? You go back to folding laundry?" She holds up a hand in an attempt to curtail Farideh's agitation, hopefully before it rears its head again. "I told them I'd think about it, when they asked me. This is just...my way of figuring it out. Humor me." More wary stares come from the candidate, but the tense in her posture slowly loosens. "What do you mean, that's it? I thought about it long and hard. I've always been told what to do, how to act, who to be. This is my chance to be myself and do what I want. Maybe even find someone-- a dragon-- who thinks the same. I can fly wherever I please, and only have to abide by the weyrleaders, or my wingleader, but certainly they won't tell me how to dress or what not to say in public." Farideh's lips compress tightly, and she shoots Faryn a look, that's quite unfathomable. "I don't know. I might. Or, I might become one of the Headwoman's assistants, or a stores aide. I spend enough time there as it is. Or, maybe I'll just go back to Igen and forget any of this ever happened. I don't know, but shouldn't I try?" That last question works for her too: shouldn't she? Faryn's eyes narrow. Now she's crossing her arms, and as usual, her cool demeanor is ruffled by Farideh's vehemence alone. "That's it." This time it's not a question. Her gaze drops to the table, where she seems to study the lines on it with more intensity than it might necessarily warrant. "And of course going to Igen wouldn't bother you, if that's what they wanted of you. Was that a perk?" Farideh rolls her eyes towards the ceiling and huffs a sigh. "A perk? Why would I want to go somewhere that I've tried to get away from? That makes absolutely no sense. I came here, and I live here, and I chose to Stand here. If I Impress, I want to stay here, forever, but we don't get that choice, in the end." She's silent for a beat, and then: "Igen isn't so bad. You get used to the heat after a while." A wan, humorless smile touches Faryn's lips. "So...if you get a dragon, they'll just tell you where to go, and when, but you'll get to wear whatever you'd like between the two points. It seems like you might switch one sort of oppression for the other." The herder doesn't seem convinced, is digging up more reasons to sit on her hands rather than make a decision. "I'm sure; the same way you get used to anything. Doesn't mean it's good for you, or you like it, but..." She shakes her head. "What if you don't get one, and the failing is worse than the trying? There aren't even Threads to fight. Why would things be so different?" The candidate listens, her face getting more dire the longer she does. Finally, quietly, Farideh explains what she's heard so many times. "No one regrets it. Not a single one. Impressing. They say it's like-- it's meeting someone for the first time and feeling like you've known them all your life. They're a part of you, ingrained, and you can't imagine parting, ever." She watches the other girl for a short pause, and then sighs. "There must be something to it. To make people give up everything, forgo any other lifestyle, for that." But, about the rest, she shrugs. "Why would failing be worse? You can just go back to what you were doing before, like nothing happened." And now she listens, the hinge of her jaw tightening as she does, until there is a nigh imperceptible tic. She's still and silent for several minutes when Farideh finishes then, very quietly, her acknowledgement comes. "Thanks." She shrugs, once. "I just needed to hear why. It's a big thing, to give your life up for something. Even if you don't really like it much. I don't even hate it. I just...don't love it, and there isn't much to lose. I guess you're right." She hesitates. "If you tell someone I said that, I'll tell them you're a liar." "It can be our-- secret?" is highly amused, Farideh's lips curving into a humored smile. "It's just a chance. They're offering and it's free, so we might as well." She puts one hand, palm down, on the table, and looks like she's about to get up. Her eyes linger on Faryn, brows lifted in question. "Anything else? Or should I leave you to find your knot?" "No," comes Faryn's abrupt, if amused, answer. "I'll get it myself, I guess. Someone's bound to have one." She, then, is the first to rise, and she does it quickly. "I guess I'll see you soon, probably." It seems she might have something more to say, but she shakes her head and turns to leave the commons before she says it. Whatever it was, it was probably nice. God forbid. |
