Almost four months had passed since the hatching, and three months previous had been the two turn anniversary of her arrival at the Weyr; that also meant two turns of not speaking to her family. It hurt sometimes, when she had the time to think about it. The familiar, sinking feeling would surprise her, pull her from her hidework or restless musings. Sometimes she pushed down the unwelcome homesickness, sometimes she wallowed in it, but she always wondered if they knew - how couldn't they? - and if they wondered how she was doing.

Would her mother still be mad? Would her father be proud? Would her sister try to avoid talking about her, or would she relish the connection to a goldrider? Would they come to visit? Would she ever see them again? Why did she feel the need to? Now that she had Roszadyth, now that High Reaches was her home, why did she still feel like she was missing something?

Farideh tried many times to start a letter, either to her mother, or her sister, or even to her friends back at Big Bay, but she always scratched out the lines or crumped up the paper. She felt inadequate and ashamed, guilt-ridden and frustrated, and Roszadyth was still too young to understand the unreasonable reactions to had to those meandering thoughts.

It was on a crisp autumn morning that she decided to sit down and finally pen something she could send out. She made herself comfortable at one of the tables in the training cavern, and despite the noise and activity, tried to concentrate on what she wanted to say; and what she didn't.

Dearest sister,

It has been two turns now since we last spoke. I hope this letter finds you well. I hope, though I fear it finds you much too late, that you will take this letter as an attempt to mend what I believe I dreadfully broke. I am sure that by now you have heard of my Impression at High Reaches Weyr. It is both hard and rewarding, much more so than learning how use all the forks at the table or perform the perfect minuet.

How is Esmeride? Has she grown as tall as me, yet? Sometimes I see the children from the cr?che and wonder if that is what my darling neice looks like.

How are uncle and father? Are they preparing for turnover yet?

Did you attend Lord Joremy's wedding? I heard it was spectacular and I was sad to have missed it.

All my love,

Farideh

She couldn't bring herself to ask about her mother. She wasn't even sure that Teoma would respond to the letter, or even open it; she might toss it in the fire and forget she ever had a sister. It took her another few hours to read the missive, re-read; she folded the letter carefully, sealing it, before handing it off to be sent to her sister.

All she could do was wait.. and hope for an answer.

I love seeing this softer side of Farideh, even with as bratty and dramatic as she is, it is these moments that give her warmth. <3
