Over a month has passed since Fort Hold's Lord Astivan went missing under mysterious circumstances along with a large sum of marks. With no reported signs of Astivan surfacing, the Weyr's search parties have been called off following a meeting between N'muir and the Hold's Steward Vaion.

Not all holders seem to view the Weyr's involvement in a positive light. Lord Ruatha has reportedly remarked that the Weyr is playing favourites, disregarding its duties to the rest of the region. In contrast, Lady Jenilynn does not seem to have lost faith in the Weyr and officially betrothed her young son to one of Headwoman Shevena's granddaughters.

The matter of who should replace Astivan has sparked unusual debate. The brownrider weyrling who claimed to have Astivan's son is trying to rally support within /and/ outside of the Weyr for her the boy Astien to be named heir over the obvious candidate and Astivan's brother, Vaion.

In the fall-out of it all, impoverished by a combination of Astivan's abuse of power and poor crops, some cotholders are abandoning their homes and seeking refuge in the Weyr. With the Weyr itself low on resources, how can it sustain a booming population? Will there be enough to go around? Is it really the Weyr's responsibility to look after these people or should the Hold be forced to look after its own?
