Snowasis, High Reaches Weyr

The Snowasis is rarely quiet, and even then, the high-ceilinged former weyr is kept from echoing by the fantastical booths tucked into its convoluted perimeter. The secluded seating spaces have been shaped from the truncated stalagmites that escaped the smoothing of the main floor, and are both softened and separated by colorful hangings that are thick and opaque enough to make each corner its own private nook.

Some of the smaller stalactites still roam the ceiling, their jagged teeth tracing a bumpy, inverted spine to the hearth. There, a thick rug with a low klah table and comfortable armchairs and couches sit, their upholstery and cushions changed sporadically to match the season: bright, light colors in the summer, fresh greens and yellows in the spring, warm autumnals in fall, and clear, rich hues for winter. Small tables litter the rest of the cavern, enough to fit up to four people each, while stools stand along the smooth wooden bar behind which is the passthrough window to the kitchen. Glass-paneled cabinetry behind the bar provides a clear view of the available liquors, the many colors reflecting the soft light of glows tucked into strategic niches around the cavern.

The snowasis is buzzing with its usual evening activities, Savannah wing's darts game just winding down. Autumn is in the air and while the patio has a few occupants, the majority of folks are tucked indoors with their drinks. "You could have lost you know Edyis, least you could have done after losing the rest of us so many marks." A Savannah greenrider states with a toothy grin as the last dart sails to the board, before grabbing her flight jacket and eyeing the young scribe who is perched at one of the tables. Readying to leave. "See you around then." "Where would be the fun in that." Edyis chirps, with a grin, perched at one of the tables closest to the dart boards. The dark haired young woman clearly enjoying herself with a half drunk mug of cider in hand perched at a now empty table near the boards. "I will see you soon Nita."

From the patio comes Farideh, walking beside two other women who look about right for the laundry with their reddened hands and weary expressions. They move as a group to the bar, each ordering some type of atypical girly drink, and settle onto the stools closest to the end of the time-worn bartop. Conversation is light and cheerful, as proven by their laughter and playful miens. But its quickly that Faridehs attention wavers, her distracted gaze moving around the room in search of diverting sights better yet, drunken scuffles. She has to turn in her seat to edge her eyes towards the dart board, where boisterous dragonriders can often be found; instead of the usual crew, she spies Edyis sitting on top of a table. Her eyebrows make a lofty ascension, and she excuses herself to meander over, nursing her cocktail. Its Edyis, right? I havent seen you since.." -- that scary day in the stores, of course.

Dark eyes shift, to study the new comers, as they arrive. Spotting at least one familiar face amongst them, Edyis offers a cheery smile to the laundress lifting her class to take a long pull from it. "Yes, and you are Farideh. Settling in alright?"

"Alright." A blase shrug serves as the brunt of her answer. "Haven't seen any more ghosts in the stores, have you?" Farideh asks with a considering look and a smile for the other girl. "I've made it a point to let one of the other girls take that task." She leans a hip against the table, a few feet away from Edyis, and continues to eye her in that enigmatic way.

"Generally I just avoid going in there until they refresh the glows baskets. Fortunately I don't have to be there often." Edyis admits with a sheepish expression and a shiver. "Nice that the other girls are willing to do that for you though. Sounds like you are settling quite well and making plenty of friends." Smile returning as she drains the last of her cider from the glass.

Plenty of friends - Farideh's mouth twitches as she nods her head. "Yeah, making tons of those." She glances around, accessing their immediate vicinity, and frowns. "You're just.. drinking by yourself?" Edyis' former company escaped her notice, and she has a slight 'there there' look for the other girl. "You can join us. We just got here. Not that those two are great conversationalists. They keep babbling on about some guy name Rh'mis." She shrugs, unconcerned.

Observing the laundress Edyis smiles, "Well I wasn't alone a little while ago. Weekly Savannah darts game, you just missed it actually." Standing now, it seems she'll accept the invitation, though her brow goes up at mention of Rh'mis. "Really? They find him attractive or was he being surly again?" From the amusement in her tone either would be entertaining. "Well thank you for the invitation. I'm sure you'll make up for any deficiency in the conversation. I don't recall if I asked, where did you come from before reaches?" Edyis is falling into step with the laundress now.

"Savannah." Between her brows a furrow starts, following an arch similar to her frown. "That sounds familiar.." Farideh doesn't dwell on the memory too long; she'll put a hand to her mouth, leaning dramatically to whisper to Edyis. "They think he's 'hot' and are speculating what all he's hiding underneath that brooding exterior." As they step up to the bar, she has a dazzling smile for the other laundress. "This is Edyis. Edyis, Periane and Ivala." They give Edyis smiles, but shift back to the topic of men and their muscles. "Igen," is supplied helpfully, or unhelpfully, however she takes the vague answer as.

Edyis really does try not to snort, but the mirth cannot be hidden from her eyes. "I see. They should tell him as much and try flirting, might actually do him some good." The young scribe watches the interplay between the girls with amusement. "It is a pleasure to meet you both, Periane and Ivala." The rest of her attention however is returned to Farideh with interest. "You must be relieved then, that the quarantines are being lifted." The tone is low enough not to full carry to the other two women, but there's a warmth to it.

Periane and Ivala are chattering consistently between themselves, while Farideh leans up against the bar, setting her glass down so she can interlace her fingers. "Mm," with a serious draw to her frown, "yes, I'm 'glad'. I haven't heard anything from home, so I can't confirm that. What they say and what it 'real' are usually different things. Healers don't want everyone else to overreact." She sighs and levels a stare at Edyis. "Where are 'you' from?"

Edyis waves the bartender over and orders a glass of wine, listening as Farideh discusses home. It's only after the glass arrives that she speaks. "Panic is a bad thing, but I'm sure things are getting better." Call it youthful optimism. "Have you thought about going back for a quick trip? Isn't hard to find someone willing usually, might put your mind at ease." She points out softly; the question is given consideration before the scribe answers, "Esvay valley, in Nabol."

The bartender's presence stills Farideh's tongue. It's once he's gone and the wine deposited into Edyis's care that she speaks again. "I would, but I'm quite busy. All of this 'laundry' to wash," with commiserating nods from her two laundry cohorts, "I might visit once it's well and truly clear." She picks up her glass and drinks, making a satisfied noise after a swallow. "Yeah? Nabol? How unpleasant. You've been exposed to all this cold weather for 'so long'." That might be another pitying stare from the laundress; her thoughts on the Reaches' weather is obvious.

Edyis is pensive, but nods. "It isn't so bad, one of the perks of living in a weyr is making friends with riders who don't need too much persuasion to spend there off duty hours some place warm." She rolls her shoulders, "I've always wanted to see Igen though, drier not as tropical as the south. So why High Reaches, why not Igen Weyr? I think I remember you saying something about having family here?"

"That is if they're not too busy with their heads up their asses." Farideh lifts her glass in a mocking cheers to all her favorite dragonriders, and immediately frowns gloomily. Her mood doesn't lift with talk of Igen either. "I wanted a fresh start. I know too many people at Igen. Sure, the weather sucks, but High Reaches isn't 'so' bad. It could be worse. I could be at Ista." Horror.

Mention of Ista brings laughter, "Yes well, I am fairly sure we wouldn't fit the dress code there." Or rather the lack of clothing, she snickers at mention of Farideh's opinion of dragon riders. "You'll get the hang of it eventually, or not. You don't seem the type to take any guff from anyone." It may be a complement, or just an observation.

Rolling her eyes at the mere mention of Ista, Farideh drains the rest of her drink and pushes the glass across the bar towards the closest bartender to pick up. "I don't think anyone really gets 'used to' jerks. Tolerate.. ignore.. avoid.. all better answers." She crosses her arms over her chest, leaning against the bar lip, and focuses her eyes on a table near the entrance. "Especially the ones who think they 'know' everything."

Edyis shrugs, another long drain from her glass. "So all riders are jerks?" The query comes after, she shrugs. "Run into a few of that kind lately I take it?" If she pays particular attention to the change in the laundress' demeanor it doesn't show outwardly.

"Yep." One word suffices. "Weren't you saying you could teach me to play darts?" Farideh turns her head to ask Edyis, referencing their conversation in the stores. Without waiting for the answer, she starts walking towards the art board, leaving her two laundry friends behind to talk as they will.

"I seem to recall promising something of the sort." Finishing off her wine, she leaves the glass at the bar moving to join the laundress at the dart board. She pulls a few sets loose stretching a moment before directing her attention back to Farideh. "At its core, Darts is pretty simple, you throw sharp pointy objects at a board to score points. The trick comes, in knowing where to aim. " She points to the numbers around the edge of the board painted in white. "These indicate how many points you get when you land in that section. See the outermost ring there that alternates in red and green?"

Board with numbers. Rings. Colors. Sharp darts you throw at the board. Sounds pretty simple. Farideh stares at the board blankly, her lips pursed with displeasure. She slides her eyes to Edyis; one brow lifts delicately. "Somehow it seems harder than aiming and throwing." And who really wants Farideh holds anything sharp in her hands, besides. "I see the red and green. What do those mean?"

"Because you have a brain and you actually use it." She chirps cheerily, "Dart in the outer red and green ring is called a double. You get double the points indicated for that section, Inner red and green ring is a triple, so triple the points for that section. The center has to bulls The outer green one is 25 points the center red is 50. So you want to be able to keep up with the arithmetic to make sure no one's pulling a fast one on the scores." Pacing back to where a white line has been painted on the floor, Edyis sticks the darts in her left hand and starts throwing, landing one dart in each section where the number 1 is marked, before handing the rest to Farideh. "So going by that I earned 2 points for the outermost ring one for the ring inside of that, 3 for the inner red and green ring, 1 for the ring inside of that, and 25 points for the second bull, 50 for the center bull for a total score of 81 points."

Numbers flying out at her from all directions - it's enough to make a simple girl's head spin. "Right. Okay." Farideh steps to the side as Edyis aims and let's go on the darts. She watches with interest, arms crossed over her chest, until it's her turn to throw. Much like the scribe, she positions herself behind the line and holds up one dart with her right hand. Briefly, she flicks a look at Edyis, and then back to the board. Her fist throw goes wide, luckily bouncing off a nearby chair. Each consecutive throw manages to hit the wall around the board. Farideh scowls and goes to retrieve the darts. "I take it you've been doing this a while?" she grumbles, as she squats over the floor.

"Practiced almost every night when I lived in Monaco helped pass the time, while I was waiting good way to settle your nerves." She states softly, collecting the darts again, and handing the whole set to Farideh. "You don't close one eye to aim, so you're already ahead of the game. It helps with depth perception." She comes up to Farideh now, and attempts to readjust the woman's throwing stance. It it's allowed then she says, "It's not about raw power, anybody can bulk up muscle given enough time. For now, just aim for the center. Use your wrists and forearm to deliver most of the force."

"Lucky you," Farideh says as she moves behind the line, letting Edyis show her the proper way to hold the dart. "Aim for the center." She tenses to throw, focusing on the center of the board, which would guarantee her fifty points. Her throw is better this time, but the dart thunks against the side of the board and bounces off to the left. "Damn." Chewing the tip of her finger, she turns to the other woman. "Maybe you should throw, so I can watch again."

The scribe grins, "Ok, but you only get to see my secret sharking skills once." She selects a single dart, and with a calm smile, sends it sailing gently through the air where it lands in the inner white ring on the number seven. "Don't throw so hard, you are using too much force. "

Between the two women, they don't make much progress on the laundress' dart throwing skills, but they give it their best efforts for a while longer. It's Farideh who suggests they get drinks at the bar, and she's all too happy to buy Edyis a drink to compensate her for her troubles. Anyone who saw them would think it's just four young women, wiling away the night with drinks at the Snowasis.
