Dear Rafevan, and he had to fight the urge to crumple it up right there, it reeked so badly of patronizing.

Dear Rafevan. It didn't get better on the second reading.

Dear Rafevan, we regret to inform you that we are unable to consider you for promotion to journeyrank at this time. Unfortunately, we have many qualified apprentices, and can only select those with the most seniority for advancement currently. We wish you the best in your ongoing studies, however, and would be happy to revisit the issue at a later date, perhaps in the coming turn.

Regards,

Rafevan didn't bother rereading it again, just folded it back up and set it aside for the trash. His fingers tapped against his mattress, expression set. They knew something--no, suspected. If they knew, they would take more action than just this. The report to the Weyrleaders, he'd seen--had helped write, in fact. He knew there was nothing incriminating in it, that between the rubble and his own efforts, there couldn't possibly be anything left to point at the source of the initial collapse. Anyway, he told himself, it wasn't untrue: the only way his controlled detonation could have possibly gotten that out of hand was if there were actual structural deficiencies in the caverns. He'd done his due diligence scoping the place out for anything obviously wrong, but he wasn't a Miner and they shouldn't--couldn't--fault him for that. Especially after he'd been the one to fix the entire mess, too.

But the letter... the letter hinted otherwise. Damn them.

If he winds up Impressing... hoo-Hooo! It sometimes can be rough keeping a dragonet quiet when they pick their lifemate's brain.

Well you did kinda make the weyr go BOOM!

I really loved how he was able to pull patronizing from two words, which set the tone for the entire letter. Awesome.
