| Raum fits in. He's pale, his accent is Igenish, he understands dragons and Weyrs and most of all he hates fish. --- It takes the Outsider a while to work up to his real errand. First, he has to stop being an exile. He gets a room to himself. He keeps his head down and he gets himself a job policing the Snowasis and sometimes doing repairwork when that's slow. He says he's only from Igen. And mosst of all, he ignores the exiles except where he can't. They don't seem to mind. Then, he takes a few days off. It's easy enough to switch shifts, rejigger the schedule until he has several in a row. He finds a stupid kid rider and asks him for a ride to River Bend to see his cousin while he's up north. River Bend is a bust. It's slow, boring work, combing through records, trying to find something, anyway. He tells the records keeper he's working on a family history for his ailing mother but then he has to flip through all the birth and death records going back eighty turns, and by the end of it his eyes are burning with strains and he misses--something. Not the desert, although he hasn't been warm in months. Not his Lord, or even really the prestige and power. He misses the slapdash investigations and brutal interrogations that being Captain of the Guard let him conduct. In the end, there's nothing to be found at River Bend except a load of horse-shit paintings that could be anyone. Raum knows a dozen people back at Igen who looks more like the paintings than Devaki or that dumbass bronzerider the Outsider won't fool with. He returns to the Weyr the same way he came. |
