K'del... couldn't.

He raised a glass (or two) in their memory, that night, but his heart and mind were too full. There were no tears.

Five queens lost, in his time at High Reaches. Another deposed. Another transferred. The only queens of the High Reaches line, now, lived elsewhere: Monaco, Telgar, Honshu.

But that wasn't the point.

He missed the friend he'd had, once. He missed the friendship he'd hoped they'd keep.

But he couldn't cry.

Do you just become... desensitised, eventually? To everything, except guilt, for being the one to survive, time and time again?

Quinlys... could.

And did. She cried alone, though, safe in her weyr with Olveraeth curled protectively around her. You never forget your first class; your first students. The others, eventually, fade into each other until you can't remember the details, but not that first one.

It filled her, for the first time, with fear.

Could she stand to lose more? She'd not lost a weyrling during training, yet.

And would Irianke even let her keep the knot long enough to find out?

She didn't... she didn't want... she didn't...

She didn't know.

Except she did.

I can't give up now, Olly.

« Then don't. »

Rhey... said nothing, felt nothing, thought nothing.

Death happened.

It was Rosvelth who mourned, so attuned to the Weyr at large. It hovered in the back of Rhey's mind; it hurt.

He hated it.

Itsy... remembered meeting the Weyrwoman and her queen. But mostly... mostly, she was still waiting for a note that didn't come, and that filled so much more of her thoughts.

Where was her ship? Why was it taking so long? Surely it was time to leave.

Before she punched people out of their maudlin misery.

Madilla...

Madilla... always cried. It had been hard enough, managing to hold things together while H'kon was trapped.

She did her best to be a listening ear, and it was hard. She wanted...

It was just all too much.

I like this, from various viewpoints: concise and to the heart.

Very cool, they tied together in their own isolated bubbles.
