| Edyis let the Istan sunlight soak deep into her skin, temporarily erasing the chill of between and High Reaches from her body. The smell of the ocean a perfect balm for the nauseating knot of anxiety that settled somewhere in her belly as she stared up at a cloud-spotted sky above. It was several minutes after they had landed, and she had stripped her flight jacket, flopping on the dark sand that Akluseth's gentle tenor finally broached the silence. « I'm sorry Ed. » The words snapped something in her, and a tide of emotions washed over, too vast and changing and contradictory for her to name any single one, or hold onto it for very long. She felt the trail of tears trace their way down along her temples, letting them flow rather than trying to fight them. She felt Akluseth's presence both physical and in her thoughts, warm and comforting. Was it the right choice, not to take the risk? She remembered hearing her mother cry, and that look of disappointment in her father's face. The things she didn't understand until she got much older. The healers had confirmed that there was a likelihood of complications given family history and an examination. Akluseth's muzzle nudged her, and she lifted a hand to run along the brown's jawline. The gesture doing more for her peace of mind than any words could have. He meant more to her, despite whatever she might have believed before this moment. Akluseth was the most important thing in her life, something real and tangible. She was relieved to find her weyr empty when she returned, and inexplicably more so when she found Rek's note. It gave her time to wash her face, unbraid her hair and change into the pajama pants Alida had gotten her for her turnday, little green firelizards embroidered all over. And so she waited and thought; about what all of it meant, about what came next, and how all of it could wait. |
