Infirmary, High Reaches Weyr

Two sets of double doors, one from the the inner caverns and a recently built set from the dragon infirmary, lead into the unnaturally hushed human infirmary. Despite fastidious cleaning, the scent of redwort and numbweed has long since soaked into every smooth-carved surface, along with other, subtler medicinal smells. Pristinely made cots are lined up against the walls; most of them are left open to view, but some in the back are surrounded by curtains for delicate procedures or critical patients.

About halfway between the two entrances is the counter for the healers on duty; it guards the entrance to the storage rooms just beyond, their shelves and cabinets lined with meticulously labeled bottles, boxes, jars, and even vats of supplies. The Weyrhealer's office is also here, along with another side room for mixing up medicines and the like.

It's the end of a long, wet day, giving the entire Weyr that damp-air feeling. It clings to everything, even the floors in some places, which may account for the abnormally large number of folks waiting around in the infirmary this evening. Kaeden would be one of the few getting ready to head out, having had a fresh bandage applied to his arm just earlier. He's also recently had a bath, by the look of wet hair but dry clothing. A Healer apprentice is reminding him of some of the do's and don'ts, and he is doing his best to agree without being too patronizing.

It doesn't seem like a regular thing for Brieli to come to the infirmary, by the way the Weyrwoman looks around as she enters; not quite uncertain, but perhaps slower than her usual brisk walk - it's no doubt on her rounds, but who bothers spending more time around sick people than they have to? She seems to be looking for someone in particular, by the way her sharp dark gaze flickers around the room, fine brows drawn together - though when she spots Kaeden, she arches one of those brows, obviously curious. On her way over to the candidate, she's intercepted by one of the Journeymen - their conversation is brief and quiet and uncomfortable on the goldrider's end before she continues on to the candidate. Once the other Healer's done, "Slip? Or something else?"

Kaeden has reached the point where he can carefully slip back into an overshirt, though he's slow in pulling the long sleeve over his bandaged left arm. It is during that process that Brieli speaks up, causing him to pause. "Ma'am," he's quick to greet, though nods and salutes are neglected while he's still in the process of pulling on that shirt. Another gentle tug does the trick, then he starts buttoning it against the evening's damp chill. "I had tunnelsnake duty today. Deked when I should have ducked, caught my arm on something sharp on the wall." By his grin, it's not too big a deal. "Luckily, Xhaeon was on hand to wash it up, since I also had a bit of 'snake gunk on me, but I couldn't quite keep stuff dry while washing off all the rest of the crud." Buttons are completed, then he tugs the bottom of the shirt to settle it just so. "Everything all right? Or just passing through?"

Not seeming overly bothered by lack of salute or otherwise, Brieli slides hands into her pockets, in no hurry to go anywhere at the moment, gaze following the Journeyman with a displeased twist of her mouth. Kaeden's injury is more interesting than whatever's bothering her though, and she winces sympathetically for the injury. Despite rumor, apparently she does have some. "Not too big a deal, but not the best day either. It's why it's done in pairs, I suppose. I think I tried to trade that off as much as possible." Her nose wrinkles girlishly before, looking back over to where her Healer has disappeared, "I was looking for Madilla, but she's not on duty. For once." There's a faint smirk before she assesses the candidate for a moment that seems longer than it is, admits, "I don't always sleep well."

"I'd never done it until today. Might have gone a little overboard, but the firelizards seemed appreciative," Kaeden replies, grinning. When Brieli mentions Madilla, the candidate can't help but look around, too. Just human nature. "Oh... yeah." He turns back to the rider quickly and frowns slightly. "Only she can help? Or is it just easier? Same healer, consistency... stuff like that?"

Carefully, perhaps in an attempt not to sound pedantic, "If you were a goldrider here, but a turn from a Weyrwoman poisoned in her own weyr, how many people would you want to trust in giving you something to help you sleep?" Brieli pauses, then adds dryly, "Now imagine you're paranoid." She looks away from Kaeden, off to the cavern, then people waiting around. With a purse of her lips, "Come to think of it, maybe I won't bother."

What can Kaeden do but nod, though there is a slightly concerned look accompanying said nod. "I, uh... yeah. That makes a lot of sense," he then replies, if a little awkwardly. He messes with his shirt's cuffs, just tugging, folding, straightening. "I'm way too trusting to be a Weyrwoman. And too male." He tries to accent it with a smile, but it's not all that successful. The candidate swallows, looks around, sticks his hands in his pockets, then turns back to Brieli. "Well... I, uh... I wish you luck. With sleeping and stuff."

There's a faint smile for the joke, and likewise faint with apology, "I have a tendency to turn conversations to the horrible. I am sorry. It's just... I don't know how else to think." Brieli pauses, then points out, "There's several Weyrwoman I can say that are or have been trusting. One is dead, true, but..." Can Kaeden see the dark little cloud that follows her around? With a sigh, seeming a touch frustrated with herself, she offers the candidate a brief, hard smile. Graciously, "Thank you. I hope your arm heals soon. If you have any issues getting time from duties, please let myself or Azaylia know."

"It's merely a flesh wound," Kaeden assures Brieli with a crooked little grin. "Just making sure it doesn't get infected or something. But thank you. As for the rest..." He pauses, then shrugs as the grin turns into a friendly sort of smile. "Really, don't worry about that. I never mind listening. Just... don't know enough to help is all. On a night like this, though, something nice and warm to drink, bunch of blankets... might do the trick."

Quirking a little smile for that assurance, Brieli casts her gaze towards the Healer's workroom, expression thoughtful. "I wonder if anyone 'knows enough' to help anyone else, sometimes. And I'd say so for some. The drink, or the blankets, or company even. But... thoughts and dreams don't respect those things, sadly. Do you have bad dreams, the same ones, over and over?" She glances back to Kaeden, curious. "I hope not. But, I hear it's more common than I'd think."

Kaeden can only give Brieli a look of sympathy. "My life has been pretty simple, ma'am. Staying on here as a candidate's been the most exciting thing in my life so far," he says, matter-of-fact while his shoulders hunch in a low shrug. "Usually if I can't sleep, it's just because I can't get my head to shut up long enough to find sleep. Not exactly the thing of nightmares, though." He shifts out of the way as someone hops in, likely another victim of slick flagstones or its like. "Thing I'm gonna..." He trails off and just points a thumb at the nearest exit. "Bit of warm milk, just a tiny bit sweetened... might work. Good luck, ma'am." He nods to her once, then awkwardly turns to leave, nearly run over by an over-tired and careening child. Now there's a nightmare.

Always fun to see a scene 'continued' elsewhere, when a character walks off camera. :) And Bri is her usual chipper self.

I can have a Kaeden-crush, right?

I'm way too trusting to be a Weyrwoman. And too male.

I love quiet scenes and this scene just has that air of quiet, late-night'ness to it that gives a different feel to the hustle and bustle of the one before!

Good scene.
