History

In Turn 16, High Reaches Weyr made a deal to work with the Vijay family of traders that went south, due to their use of the Weyr to move stolen goods. In Turn 19, under new and unstable leadership, High Reaches faced a series of raids on their tithes that turned out to be the Vijays again. In an attempt to make a show of strength, their leader, Rajiv, was executed for the crime, while many of the men and women involved in criminal pursuits were sent to the mines at Crom.

Rajiv's execution and the subsequent criminalization of the Vijay clan left them living in poverty and secrecy for the long turns afterward, avoiding the Weyr's scrutiny lest more punishment come down. The women of the family took over the management of the family's finances and business interests (such as they were) in absence of any of the men to step up in Rajiv's place. The caravan struggled each turn, but managed to hold themselves together, despite heavy losses in the first few winters.

In Turn 27, Rajiv's daughter Aishani left the caravan to assume a new identity at Crom Hold, trading places with a young woman named Brieli, who eventually married into the family. Aishani's intent was to move to High Reaches Weyr under the guise of 'Brieli' to exact revenge on those who had so wronged the family -- and it was what she had been trained for. However, the next turn, she Impressed to gold Iesaryth, causing a great deal of consternation in the family -- especially amongst those newly released from the mines of Crom, abused enough by dragonriders to not want one in the family.

When she began to offer aid, it helped. When she named herself Acting Weyrwoman and revealed herself to be a Vijay in Turn 31, it helped a great deal. Though Aishani eventually stepped down, and her dragon did not rise in time to make her Senior Weyrwoman, she has continued to make efforts to help repair the damage done by the Weyr to which she is now tied.

Current Status

The Vijay caravan is now well-stocked and in good repair, with approximately 40 people in the family. The ages tend toward the very young or the old, with most of the eldest men having done time in the mines or similar. All of them have various trader-type skills, but they've also kept up and passed on their less-legitimate abilities like knife-throwing, hand-to-hand fighting, lock picking, creative accounting and so on. Their base of operations is around Tillek Hold, though they have dealings with Greenfields Hold that involve a little trafficking of stolen goods, a little extortion, and a little acquiring of items on request -- thanks to Aishani and her partner-in-crime, Jo.

Notable Vijays

  • Rajiv - Former leader of the Vijays, executed at High Reaches Weyr in Turn 19. He was a very angry man.
  • Aishani - Junior Weyrwoman to Iesaryth at High Reaches Weyr. Gave her life to settling a score. Distrusted by her Weyr. Regaining her family's trust.
  • Jayzin - Jyani's older brother, more of a cook than a thief. Standing for Hraedhyth and Cadejoth's clutch.
  • Devindra - Mid-50's. Hardass. Head of the family, but ailing due to his time working in Crom's mines.
  • Priya - Late 40s. Kind and pragmatic. Will likely lead the family in Devindra's place when he passes, as she did when he was a convict.
  • Jyani - Teenager. Lives at High Reaches Weyr, working as Aishani's assistant.
  • Leo - Mid-20's, beginning to make a name for himself in heading up some new 'family business'.
