Eternal Sentinel Egg
The rich hue of loam, dark as though freshly damp from a recent fall of rain, shelters the entire base of this smooth egg and gives it a rooted quality, as if it had grown straight out of the ground itself. Striations of grayed umber peek out here and there on one side, their long fingers stretching deep below the surface, lost to sight in the pocket of sand within which the egg sits. Even as they reach downward, a vast column of stately, furrowed bark rises up from the semblance of earth, seeming solid and immovable against the stark contrast of a spring blue sky. Tapering away into that sky, the top of the egg is dappled with a cool green canopy that's speckled with pale gold, draping downward here and there like a protective umbrella of warm, leafy sunshine.
That long crack that's been working its way down the side of the Eternal Sentinel egg for the last little while suddenly widens, shadows masking the shape of its occupant for a moment or two until the two halves fall away neatly to either side. In their wake, they leave what looks like a pile of buff and ochre-colored sticks sitting in an ungainly heap on a little hillock of sand. After only a moment, bright, interested eyes open and take in the surroundings, and a long, narrow head lifts to swing to and fro in quest of what comes next.
Standing Watch At Sunset Brown Hatchling
A study in contrasts is this mid-sized brown, his build all odd angles and long planes on a spindly body that gives him the distinct appearance of a bundle of sticks. His hide boasts an even coloring with little to dispel its uniformity other than an undercurrent of ochre that intensifies here and there. A swathe of this warmer shade sweeps along browridges and under round, alert eyes only to vanish into the near-drab of his neck and re-appears again along wing tips like the late rays of sunset. Overlong, his neck seems endless, its toasted-tipped ridges smaller and less prominent than average and in places, almost flat, more like little raised patches of hide than proper ridges. A narrow-muzzled head with a long nose bears high-set eyes that peer out at the world with uncannily sharp and interested intelligence. His limbs are the gangling sort, awkward and at odds with his body except that when he moves, it all starts to come together in the tip-toed steps of a dancer, though that long, flat-topped tail is more of a menace than a help.
Temperament
Enthusiastic, eager and straightforward in his youth, Gedroth will carry forward many of those characteristics beyond weyrlinghood and into adulthood: brusque, clear-spoken and never afraid to put himself out there, you and your brown will quickly become an energetic team. Rather than being the dominant element of the pair, Gedroth, combined with your inner drive will prove to be a powerful complement your own disposition, and rather than struggling for power over one another, you and your brown will easily learn to work in tandem to put this strength to its best use. Whether he's just dancing around Fort's skies, or sharing his insights on the latest Weyr happenings and how he sees the world and everyone in it, Gedroth will be your ever-present ally; an observant, outspoken, and, most of all, devoted comrade and consort.
As a hatchling and growing weyrling, a young Gedroth will be exuberant and maybe even a little brash, and ever-interested in the world around him; he's frank and genuine and unafraid to express himself to you or anyone else with his particular brand of verve. You'll not find him one to shy away from daily lessons, exercises, or duties, since such things are necessities and he may even take some pleasure in them. Each new morsel of information he acquires only adds to his enthusiasm for life in general, and he goes about expressing it in a sincere, plainspoken way. In fact, this candidness might even cause a bit of embarrassment due as he may blurt out his thoughts in one tactless rush: « Hey Rhodya! You know, if Dasarth just slipped to the side a little in that drill, he'd /get it/ you know? » Yet he comes by this straightforward nature honestly, and there's not a deceitful or malicious bone in his body -- he's simply speaking his mind, and can you blame him for that? With such an open appreciation for all the activity and excitement around him, it's no wonder that during drills, practice, or even just when he's down at the lake nosing around, you might have to slow him down and really get Gedroth to pay attention to the big picture rather than all the little things that tend to capture his attention from moment-to-moment. He doesn't tend to fixate on any one of the potentially interesting things around him, and that's both a strength and a flaw: he's aware of the slant of sunbeams, the flutter of a vtol's wings, but not necessarily the fact that a stormfront is blowing in and it's time to go inside. Moreover, whatever he's into at the moment, he'll always want you to be involved with: « Hey! Rhodya! Look at all these little white pebbles in a row! Think we can find them all? » as Gedroth will be most content, even eager, to be reaching these little achievements with you. Sometimes, he's just a little muddled as how to go about achieving them, or even what the bigger over-arching goal might be; he has the will but, while young, still needs you to show him the way. What he /does/ know is this: Gedroth is here, and he wants to make it loud and clear to all that he's here to stay.
As he outgrows his scattered tendencies, Gedroth will mature to a shrewd and keen observer, and while the nature of his intellect is driven mostly by deduction rather than intuition, he will be a benefit to any wing that may tap him. With his honed, linear insight he is able to cut through a lot of the muck that some might throw his way and get right to the true heart of difficult matters. During drills and sweeps, he has stamina to rival almost any bronze, and long distance flying? Not a problem! Especially not with you along, since he'll never lose that ever-present desire to be going somewhere, anywhere, /together/, with you, and with his developed perspective Gedroth will have both the initiative and the resourcefulness to pursue any particular interest which might catch his not-inconsiderable fancy. In time, too, you might note a particular interest of his: he has a fascination with dancing of any kind, being equally enamored with the simple steps of a child or the more complex maneuvers of dancers at a Gather. He may even develop a unique form of 'dancing', himself, whirling and circling and skipping through the air when he's feeling so inclined, and will be ever-delighted to share this particular form of self-expression with you and any other interested observer. And while your direct, although never gruff, brown might never completely outgrow his to-the-point ways, in time perhaps he will learn when it's best not to share his innermost thoughts... except with his lifemate, of course, which will require some patience on your behalf. Throughout it all, his devotion to the truth will never wane and Gedroth will never shy away from delivering welcome, or unwelcome, messages to others in the most succinct of terms, making him an honest and steadfast wingmate and companion, if a bit of a somewhat brusque one.
Maturity brings not only a more measured perspective, but also an interest in the opposite sex. Gedroth won't be one to flinch away from flights, finding greens and golds both to be absolutely fascinating. His romantic inclinations fall in between devotion and lady-of-the moment: he's quite capable of forming a long-standing attachment to a female that catches his attention and inspires him. He'll be especially interested in greens who are particularly fleet and intelligent flyers, or that have an interesting worldview to share with him, some tidbit of wisdom about how things work. « Is that so, Chielyth? I hadn't really thought about it that way, but now that you mention it, I see what you're saying and that's /really/ interesting. » He likes to speak his own mind, discuss and debate, but he also enjoys listening to others, especially if they have something to say that he considers valuable. He's no polished charmer, but he does have a certain straightforward gentlemanliness to him around the ladies that may prove an asset in his dealings with some of them. Always eager to get to the point, Gedroth may be that rare male who really stints on blooding, even in goldflights. In his youth, this will be a distinct disadvantage to chasing golds and something that the two of you may have to overcome in order for him to succeed in becoming a clutchsire. On the ground just prior to take-off, he may surprise onlookers with short bounces up into the air, dancing around in anticipation as he waits for the moment when his lady-du-jour lifts off. In the air itself, Gedroth tangos through the sky, his movements sure and straight to the point once he's found his groove, touched with a dance-like quality that lends him a sort of no-holds-barred grace. Should he catch, Gedroth will be very devoted and continuously interested in his mate, until such time as she rises again and is caught by another dragon, or he chases and catches again. As a clutchsire, he'll be even more dedicated to his mate, eggs and eventually, offspring, asking you to remember their names for him and moments from their weyrlinghood for him to enjoy over and over again as the turns unfold.
A stickler for truth with an avid interest in both your knowledge of the world and that of other dragons, Gedroth is truly your counterpart, that missing piece, perhaps, that lends you both balance. Apart, you're strong in different ways; together, it's almost impossible to take you down. Whatever life throws your way, you'll have a guide, messenger and devoted confidant in your dancing, plain-spoken but gentlemanly brown.
Public Impression Message
After mapping a nearly straight course through eggs and other dragonets alike, the Standing Watch At Sunset Brown toe-dances over to a tall, dark-haired young woman with interesting feet. These he regards for a long moment, before looking up and into her face intently, as if waiting for her to wake up from a dream and see him for all that he really is.
Private Impression Message
A flutter of wind ripples along the shallows of a long lake's inlet, dispelling the heat of the sands and bringing with it the distant scents of freshly turned earth and the mineral quality of water. The shadow of wings passes by overhead, interrupting the weak touch of distant sun's rays, lost in a cloudy haze up above and yet a harbinger of things to come. Onward comes the breeze, disturbed by the passage of some winged creature, but though you strain to see, you cannot quite make him out. Until he is simply, there, there in your mind, his voice carrying with it the strong message: « We've got a long way to go, Rhodya. Better get to it, hadn't we? » That pause is filled with a sudden return of normal senses, of heat, of sand, of /him/ standing before you with his head cocked to the side, bright eyes fixed upon you intently. « Gedroth is my name. And I am /here/. » Here for you. Here for always.
Mindvoice
The rush of wind through wings and along shallow watery inlets infuse the mindvoice of your Gedroth. The chuckle of streams and the scents of freshly turned earth, along with the crisp mineral tang of freshwater lakes and creeks all come together to form a sense of place that can at times be extraordinarily vivid. Gedroth uses all five senses when sharing impressions of the world or his own inner mindscape with you, though he's also verbal enough, carrying succinct, well-thought out messages to you once he's figured out what they are. Very direct, his tone is typically clear and to the point. He doesn't mince words, though his vocabulary lacks nothing and is not simplistic.
Dragon Inspirations
Gedroth is inspired by cranes and various crane legends, especially those pertaining to cranes as messengers of wisdom, the habit of cranes standing sentinel over others of their kind and a particular Greek legend of Ibycus, who was attacked by a thief and left for dead, until a flock of cranes passed by and calling out to the birds, the cranes went and tracked down the culprit and flew above him until he broke down from guilt and confessed. This single-mindedness seemed to match up with your request for a determined, A to B personality with strong masculine overtones. Additionally, while cranes do not mate for life, they do form long-standing attachments with their mates, often decades and this seemed to be a good match to Rhodya's lady-like aspirations: a gentleman, though not a polished one, to her lady, loyal and true to her and serially monogamous perhaps with the ladies of his acquaintance ... at least until the next flight where he meets with success.
Egg Inspiration: The massive horse chestnut tree that dominated the school playground of my childhood. Used as 'homebase' for many a game of tag or just to sit under for shade on a hot day, the tree was the heart and soul of the playground.
Name Meaning
Inspired by the Latin and Greek names for the Crane family - gruidae and geranos respectively - Gedroth is hopefully the strong consonant-balanced name that you were looking for. We feel it also 'sounds' the way he 'feels' in that he is strong, straightforward and to the point, and so is his name.
